Re: letting go of the reins vs holding on when falling. I think there are pros and cons to each, but I let go simply because I know my horse isn't going to take off and because if she does take off and put a foot through her reins they're only leather and will break long before her leg will break. I don't know what kind of reins you guys use but the tensile strength of bone is a lot higher than leather....
@Beccie1011 - Sawing your hroses mouth should NEVER EVER be something you consider to make it 'stop'. Sawing like this can result in gum damage, sore teeth, broken teeth, bruises. This is a perfect example of a novice rider losing their temper and abusing the bit because they dont have a whip.
There is a massive, massive difference between 'applying pressure to alternate reigns' to bring a horses attention back, and what that ridiculous person was doing.

@TRexBarbieDoll she was probably see sawing the horses mouthe becuase she freaked out or the horse may have started to act up ( thats what i tink im not sure though) its an easier way of making the horse stop but i do agree she went a bit over board

I have had that one time but when i fell and is realized that i had the reins in my hand i immediately let them go, and that was before i was on the ground so i haven't hurt the horse.

these girls have falling talent. falling talen is when you make falling look cool, such as when you backflip of the horse or do a split when you fall.

You're not supposed to hold on to the reins when you fall but I do sometimes. I guess we just don't think,'Hey! I should let go of the reins while i am falling,' It's not something that goes into your head.

Well. Yesterday i fell off my horse and broke my arm, whip lash, and a bruised face. Fuun! the horse ducked his head down right before the jump..And i lost control...And booooom! :P no more riding til september ugh.

I had a better fall yesterday! Not that that's very good.....but I got back on and finished the show. My horse spooked and took off full gallop, making me pop out of the saddle to one side and slam face-first into a tree. Broken finger and a bad scrape to the side of the face! (I'm still going to ride him as soon as possible though)

OMG last one 0.0 I've had that happen to me at a show jumping 3.6' and Cassy my horse is 17h! Shes like 1200lbs! I'm 102.....I almost died. Seriously. I fractured my neck, upper arm, and collar bone.

ok honestly? at 1:41 the girl is in her jumping position 3 strides before that jump. if your going to jump that big you cant get that far ahead of the horse. no wonder she fell off. and shes just gonna take the reins with her? poor horse.
@wilkinziz i do have them. ive been riding and jumping for 16 years. and i know you should NOT be in your jumping position 3 STRIDES BEFORE THE JUMP. she should be in her tack with her leg on helping guide the horse to the jump.
wow got a hold onto the reins argument going on here. I've fallen a lot, mostly while trail riding bareback lol. I have never kept ahold of the reins when I am falling off. I mean self preservation! I need my hands to protect myself in the fall horses can look after themselves for a few seconds. besides if the horse trusts you it will come back I have never had a horse go more than 100 feet from where I fell before they stop and most stop right away and that was in huge open pastures not arenas
these riders arent treating the horse right loose the reins and they can't control or steer right the rider isnt controlling right so the horse doent know what to do dont blame the horse blame the rider in this specific video no wonder the horse threw them off
I understand that it is not always possible to do so... Sometimes they get pulled out of your hands, sometimes you can't grab them in the first place, and sometimes the horse will be flailing in your direction and in that case yes, maybe you should get out of the way. Leather reins WILL break before all of your bones do. And horses are not as strong as you'd think. For a child, I would not recommend that they try to argue with a horse. A pony, maybe. Depends on their experience. But for adults,
HOLD ONTO YOUR REINS!!! It is the safest thing to do! The horse well stress itself out more by running around out of control. They are 'flight' animals. Panic sets in and they will run themselves into the ground. Every horse is different, and if you know your horse, which you should, then you should know how to react. I have taken lessons and clinics from some of the best coaches in Canada and the first thing they will ALL tell you is NEVER LET GO.
I have used some of the clips in this video on my other channel because i have asked the people/my maytes if i can use them first so yeah...nowt ya can do about it sorry .
The first thing I do is let go of the reins when I fall or get thrown and take my feet out of the stirrups. I have had some bad falls, but in all, it is the horses that I am more concerned about simply because they are in much more control of themselves, but if we hold them back when they fall or get scared they are going to be seriously injured. The one time that I saw a girl going cross country hold onto the reins over a 5ft jump, the horse collapsed and cut its mouth up. LET GO OF THE REINS!
@lovegreatspirit i agree :) the mare i ride, and usually only i ride, has a guy on her a few weeks ago and he used a stronger bit and although were not sure what he did exactly he has damaged her mouth :/ these past weeks shes been in pain and as soon as you touch the reins she tries to rear :( so people....DONT PULL ON THE REINS, wether youre falling or just riding or fallen, id say the horses mouth is the most "delicate" part of him/her...so we need to be carefull :)
When jumping people who have REALLY tight reins forget to do this:Jumping,into position,loosen the reins so the horse can stretch it's neck/head out,which gives it balance.
yes, one CAN use these clips. to say one CAN NOT implies one does not have the ability. I was able to do it multiple times, and thus, I did. you have been proven wrong.
i got on this insane horse once - i swear it HATED me - and it tried its best to throw me off, it kicked, it ran into walls it changed direction really quickly-it even bit my toe- i stayed on though and then at the end - when i was dismounting- the horse threw its head up and i freaked out cos i was halfway off it and ended up on the floor.
and i swear it looked at me as if to say "what the hell are you doing on the floor?...moron"
you would have had a time with me and my old pony! 49 falls in 6 months!!!!! he is crazy!!!!!!! but he isnt mine anymore :) i have an amazing new horse :)

Jeez common sence guys and just coz they fell off docent mean their bad riders to be a good rider u have to fall off 10times is the saying and most of these falls where partly the horses fault for misbehaving I ride a pony that refuses jumps alot
i understyand how some of these people feel but come on let go of the reins you can hurt your horse by doing that i worry more about that than my horse getting caught in his reins horses are smart enough not do that but when you dont let go and they know something is dragging their head its not good jeez

OMG last one 0.0 I've had that happen to me at a show jumping 3.6' and Cassy my horse is 17h! Shes like 1200lbs! I'm 102.....I almost died. Seriously. I fractured my neck, upper arm, and collar bone.

ok honestly? at 1:41 the girl is in her jumping position 3 strides before that jump. if your going to jump that big you cant get that far ahead of the horse. no wonder she fell off. and shes just gonna take the reins with her? poor horse.

@wilkinziz i do have them. ive been riding and jumping for 16 years. and i know you should NOT be in your jumping position 3 STRIDES BEFORE THE JUMP. she should be in her tack with her leg on helping guide the horse to the jump.

wow got a hold onto the reins argument going on here. I've fallen a lot, mostly while trail riding bareback lol. I have never kept ahold of the reins when I am falling off. I mean self preservation! I need my hands to protect myself in the fall horses can look after themselves for a few seconds. besides if the horse trusts you it will come back I have never had a horse go more than 100 feet from where I fell before they stop and most stop right away and that was in huge open pastures not arenas

these riders arent treating the horse right loose the reins and they can't control or steer right the rider isnt controlling right so the horse doent know what to do dont blame the horse blame the rider in this specific video no wonder the horse threw them off

I understand that it is not always possible to do so... Sometimes they get pulled out of your hands, sometimes you can't grab them in the first place, and sometimes the horse will be flailing in your direction and in that case yes, maybe you should get out of the way. Leather reins WILL break before all of your bones do. And horses are not as strong as you'd think. For a child, I would not recommend that they try to argue with a horse. A pony, maybe. Depends on their experience. But for adults,

HOLD ONTO YOUR REINS!!! It is the safest thing to do! The horse well stress itself out more by running around out of control. They are 'flight' animals. Panic sets in and they will run themselves into the ground. Every horse is different, and if you know your horse, which you should, then you should know how to react. I have taken lessons and clinics from some of the best coaches in Canada and the first thing they will ALL tell you is NEVER LET GO.

The first thing I do is let go of the reins when I fall or get thrown and take my feet out of the stirrups. I have had some bad falls, but in all, it is the horses that I am more concerned about simply because they are in much more control of themselves, but if we hold them back when they fall or get scared they are going to be seriously injured. The one time that I saw a girl going cross country hold onto the reins over a 5ft jump, the horse collapsed and cut its mouth up. LET GO OF THE REINS!

@lovegreatspirit i agree :) the mare i ride, and usually only i ride, has a guy on her a few weeks ago and he used a stronger bit and although were not sure what he did exactly he has damaged her mouth :/ these past weeks shes been in pain and as soon as you touch the reins she tries to rear :( so people....DONT PULL ON THE REINS, wether youre falling or just riding or fallen, id say the horses mouth is the most "delicate" part of him/her...so we need to be carefull :)

When jumping people who have REALLY tight reins forget to do this:Jumping,into position,loosen the reins so the horse can stretch it's neck/head out,which gives it balance.

i got on this insane horse once - i swear it HATED me - and it tried its best to throw me off, it kicked, it ran into walls it changed direction really quickly-it even bit my toe- i stayed on though and then at the end - when i was dismounting- the horse threw its head up and i freaked out cos i was halfway off it and ended up on the floor.
and i swear it looked at me as if to say "what the hell are you doing on the floor?...moron"

Jeez guys not every1 is a top notch rider generally when ur in mid fall u dont usually think things like oh I better let go of the reins so my horse docent get his head yanked.. Jeez common sence guys and just coz they fell off docent mean their bad riders to be a good rider u have to fall off 10times is the saying and most of these falls where partly the horses fault for misbehaving I ride a pony that refuses jumps alot

i understyand how some of these people feel but come on let go of the reins you can hurt your horse by doing that i worry more about that than my horse getting caught in his reins horses are smart enough not do that but when you dont let go and they know something is dragging their head its not good jeez
