  • hey buddy forgot to ask you, what kind of data you have for those 240 grainers I ordered some berger 230s instead of the 210s figured i could get a little more distance with the heavier weight. If you dont mind sharing. Right now like i said earlier I am using 190s with 68.3 gr IMR 4831 not sure what the fps is since I dont have a chrono any info would be appreciated. thanks

  • @87dixieboy The sierra book shows 68.2 gr on IMR 4831 for max load on 240 smk with a start load of 63.2 gr. A friend of mine shoots the 230 bergers with 1 grain more of powder. Always start low and work up carefully. 4831 works great up to barrel lengths of 26 inches. I have seen higher velocities with lower pressure using H1000 and Retumbo with longer (26 in, +) barrels. Those powders yielded over 200 fps faster than 4831 in the 30 inch barreled guns I have built. Hope this helps.

  • @87dixieboy 4831 is one of my favorite powders.Work up carefully watching for pressure signs like flat cupped primers. When you hit your peak back the load off 2 gr for shooting in the summer heat. My current load for my 30 in barreled 300 win w 240 smk is 73.5 H1000 for winter and 72 for summer heat. That produces 2875 fps in both extremes. The 72 gr load produces 2800 fps in the winter but gives me a safety cushion in the summer heat. Im thinking of keeping the lower load permanent.

  • @87dixieboy My friend shooting the berger 230 bullets has excellent reports of accuracy and low standard deviation using Retumbo and fed match primers in his 300 win mag. It shoots better than any other combo for him. He recently shot a 2 in group at 500 yards with 4 out of 5 shots under 1 inch. Sounds like a great bullet. He backed off the max load and loaded for accuracy. It shoots one hole groups at 100 yards.

  • @longrangemaster1 Thanks for the info Im prolly gonna stick with the IMR for now since i have 16 lbs of it unless the heavy bullet doesnt like it will have to post a vid when i get me a load figured out

  • This was an exceptional video.I really enjoyed the description of the rifle, the self criticism on the imperfect shot (which was diligent but not necessary for a thirteen-hundred yard shot),and the accurate lesson at the end reminding us that not just anybody with an SKS and thousand yard flip-up site can make a shot of this caliber. Was curious about the rough cost to assemble the rifle though.

  • @mwl22871 Thanks for the POSITIVE comments. The rifle without scope price was around 1900.00 dollars. Extras like the scope bubble level, the angle cosine indicator, the bipod and scope are more.

  • @longrangemaster1 I calculated the wind incorrectly. In long range tournaments a miss can cost you the prize. I am always searching for the bulls eye.Its a work in progress. I wouldnt have taken the shot if I didnt feel confident. In the video conditions the elk was lazer ranged 4 times to be sure. The wind was a steady 6 mph. A down slope of 3 degrees was calculated. I had shot well in these conditions before. It still took 15 minutes to set up for the shot. And some luck.

  • Nice shooting man, i took a deer also at 1150 yards this year just wasnt able to get it on film will try next year though. One question though I thought the matchkings werent suppost to be used for hunting. I also was using a 300 winnie but I am using the berger hunting 190s. Once it warms up thinking of getting data for their 210s anyways happy hunting keep the videos coming

  • @87dixieboy Thanks for watching. And good shooting on the deer. My other video "1155 Yard Elk" features a shot using berger 210s. Its a very effective bullet. To answer the Matchking question. Heavy hunting bullets stop expanding at 2300 fps. Polymer tipped bullets stop expanding around 1600 fps. Hollow point Match bullets will continue to expand below mach (1130 fps). Currently our military is using sierra 190 and 220 matchkings in 300 winchester. And 300 sierras for the 338 lapua.

  • @Viktor4158 what exactly are you saying that the bullet did not perform? the elk died didn't it? he went down didn't he? so what the hell are you saying the bullet did not perform? and taking an animal in an incredible distance in not a sign of disrespect for game, if you know what you're doing then why not? maybe you can't hit an animal past 100 yards!! LOL!!!

  • @kunatero Thank You. The bullet truely made the difference. We waited an hour before we moved in. The video doesnt show we moved to a parallel ridge 300 yards from the elk to see if she was down. We confirmed that she had expired but were ready to take her if needed. Interestingly another elk was bedded about 40 yards away. I have been hunting elk for over 20 years and harvested every elk I have shot at. A few took more than 1 shot. They are very tough animals. 240 grain bullets work.

  • What is this jerk trying to prove? Using animals for target practice has nothing to do with hunting.True hunters respect their quarry, and would never take a chance of wounding an animal.Clearly the bullet did not perform at that distance.

  • @Viktor4158 As the video clearly demonstrates, these men harvested this cow following the shot,so to say that they used it simply as target practice seems to be a bit unfair. And to say that a bullet that left a ten inch concussion rip did not perform...Well,it's got me wondering what you expect in a bullet.I'm thinking that clearly, you must belong to PETA.

  • @mwl22871 Thanks for the positive remarks. Tom Sarver (IBS World Record Holder for smallest 5 shot group @ 1000 yards) uses the same bullet I used to take the elk. He engages steel targets at over 1 mile and used the bullet to drop a buffalo at long range. In my custom rifle the bullet at 2875 fps at 7621 elevation 28 degrees yields just over 1500 lbs energy at 1300 yards. Thats more than enough to take an elk. Had it been a perfect heart shot the elk would have tipped over in its bed.

  • @Viktor4158 Our special forces engage and take out targets as far as 1.5 miles now. 1 mile(1760 yards) is very common. I have competed and beat some very good snipers in long range shooting tournaments. I have also lost my fair share but always place decently. Maybe you should build a good rifle and go compete. Only then will you find out that long shots can be done. I hope you never call a marine sniper a " JERK " They are as smooth as glass. Thats trigger analogy.

  • @longrangemaster1 i agree with u this guy has no idea its not like u shot it in the ass .

  • @Viktor4158 Whats the definition of a true hunter ? The definition of respect ? Theres always a chance of anything with something. An interesting Statistic in close quarter shootouts of less than 7 yards revealed that 98% of the bullets shot missed the target. Look at the amount of bullets fired in the famous L.A. machine gun bank robbery. 99.999% of those shots missed. Maybe hunters should place the barrel on the animal before pulling the trigger. Lol.

  • Who needs camo when you can shoot like this guy? Awesome shot, I am humbled by your abilities with a rifle!

  • @lukeperry085 Thanks. The same morning of the hunt 2 other hunters ruined 3 seperate stalks we attempted. They shot a whole box of ammo and drew blood (we found the blood trail) on 1 of the elk. They were unethical hunters. They didnt follow up on their shots and didnt know how far they were shooting. When I pointed out the blood trail crossing the road to them (hunters) they just left. We offered to help them track and finish off the elk. They declined. Ethics? They had none!

  • Oh by the way,do some more hunting videos. Great team work, keep it up.

  • @KISSITPEOPLE Thanks. Will be doing a deer hunt video soon at 825 yards. Shot with a 300 win. mag using 190 sierras.

  • What a shot. Congratulations vic

  • Sweet shootin' iron Vic! Nice shot for a Gup! ;)

  • Nice work!
