  • sounds like Ross Valory hates Steve Perry. the ways he talks about him in that... ya know angry voice. i dunno what does it sound like to you

  • if Steve Perry is gonna tour i swear i will see his show i wanna hear his voice i love Journey and Rock music alot and im 13 so i obviously i was born in the wrong decade. :( sigghh.

  • Sad to end that way and with acrimony. Hopefully they can appreciate how good they made so many people feel and look back fondly at their time together.

  • thanks too dean for beating up his girlfriend and getting arrested-and neal sending the nude pics of himself, the journey name is dead.

  • Steve Perry = DIVA. who cares though anyway.

  • Pineda is a good singer but Perry is just a cornerstone of Journey song. Anyone singing his songs is imitating him no matter how well.

  • you damn right your body your decision about your body what dont people understand you are a man's man and you were monogamous who would not want you on their team awe need more like you unlike others you never tried to imitate or duplicate you awere you aw just you

  • Steve Perry is Journey. And Steve if you read this I hope everyone in the band can put their differences a side and tour again. We all love you and want to see the real Journey once again. No one will ever capure the sound that you all had at one time. We love you Steve.

    Kimmi

  • @Mskimmigirl007 There was a Journey before Steve Perry and there is one after Steve Perry. You may not like it, but many do.

  • @BloodofPatriots Journey wasn't on the radio before Perry and they're not on the radio after Perry. There is no replacement for Perry's voice and there never will be.

  • @jpb219 So that's your measure of a band? You must think Justin Bieber is the greatest singer in the world then because he's all over the radio. You do know the Ramones and the Grateful Dead never had much air time either. According to you they must have both sucked, right? Yeah, the pioneers of punk and jam band aren't as good in your book as Justin Bieber. LOL

  • @BloodofPatriots No, what I'm saying is that nobody takes Journey seriously without Steve Perry. Maybe 5% of the fans stuck with them after Steve left, but most fans, including myself, won't even listen to post-Perry Journey, much less pay money for CDs, downloads, or concert tickets. Journey is not drawing even a quarter of the crowds they did with Perry when they sold out stadiums. They only have 2 tour dates scheduled for 2012, Why? Because they suck now.

  • @jpb219 So you were never a Journey fan, but were a Steve Perry-asslicker? That's all you had to write. You do know that the original Journey line-up consisted of former bandmates of Santana, right? While Steve Perry couldn't get a contract to save his life and went back to farmwork in Hanford, the original Journey line-up played with Carlos Santana. Why you love Steve Perry is a mystery, he told you to fuck off nearly 20 years ago when he quit Journey.

  • @BloodofPatriots I've been a Journey fan since 1978 when the Journey that Steve Perry launched into super-stardom joined. Pre-Perry Journey couldn't sell out a corner bar. Once Perry joined, they were selling out stadiums. Even their producer at the time agreed that they needed a real singer if they wanted radio play. Perry didn't tell the fans to "fuck off", Schon and Cain tried to control his health decisions and he told them to fuck off.

  • @BloodofPatriots Well you name a Journey song before Steve Perry or after?

  • @Metalstryke Both "Karma" and "Nickel and Dime" from their album Next both rock. You can really tell why Neal Schon, at just 15 years old, was playing with Santana and at 16 was invited to join a new band by Eric Clapton. As for Journey after, "After All These Years" is as good as any Perry-era ballad. Perry was plucked from obscurity by Journey, made a star, and then he told them (and the fans) to fuck off. They moved on, so should you.

  • @BloodofPatriots What about now though? the band they were before Perry was way different, now they are trying to still ride the Perry train by getting singers that are trying to rip off Perry's signature singing sound. Journey didn't go back doing what they did before Perry. I like the prog rock they were before Steve, it was Santana-like, but these guys are now still trying to ride Steve's train by trying to get immitators. So what's your argument?

  • @Metalstryke Much of the Journey sound wasn't Perry, but Cain. Jonathan Cain's piano playing allowed Perry's vocals to soar. Look at any Journey power ballad and look what's driving it: Cain's piano. Cain wrote the music for Open Arms, the original power ballad, while he was with The Babies. Journey's signature sound didn't appear until Escape, the first album with Cain. Street Talk was crap compared to Escape or Frontiers, etc.. It had Perry's voice, but not Cain's playing.

  • @BloodofPatriots So why haven't they been able to pull off hits if it was Cains sound, they had hits before Jonathan showed up.. You forget Lights, Feelin that Way, Wheel in the Sky, Lovin touchin Squeezin, Anyway you want it, Patiently, Opened the door??? Dude you have no argument and you can't accept it, if anything Jonathan's Synth sound overflooded the guitar sound and Steve's vocals on Frontiers and Raised on Radio

  • @Metalstryke The taste of music fans has changed. Duh. But are you seriously trying to compare "Lights" with "Open Arms?" Wheel in the Sky with Faithfully? Or Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin with Still They Ride? You have zero musical knowledge or taste. "Overflooded?" WTF? Steve Perry was the producer for Raised on Radio, bonehead. If you hated the sound, blame him. LOL

  • @BloodofPatriots Dude your insults are that of a dumbass who just wont admit you have no point, Journey isn't and was'nt squat without Perry.. Dude if Perry came back with the band guarandamntee you that they put out at least one hit, As for the sound of Frontiers and RoR Perry could only do so much as Cain was the one in charge of the final product, You have no argument, but excuses and childish insults cause your a fuckin tard.. Musical taste change, yeah bud

  • @Metalstryke Like most latent homosexuals and women, you're in love with Steve Perry and his voice. That's vice, but those of us with musical backgrounds know that the voice is but one instrument in a composition. What drives those Journey megahits was Cain's piano playing, not Perry's voice. Your complaints about Raise on Radio, where Perry controlled the sound as producer, proves you an ignorant idiot when it comes to music. I laughed when I saw you step in that bucket of shit.HA!

  • @BloodofPatriots Dude your an idiot, as soon as you know you make no sense you try to insult, and try to be funny when your a fuckin idiot. Journey isn't shit without Perry. there's other bands that can make it without an original member, and they are not one of them. I doubt your a fuckin musician cause you no nothing of song writing and you obviously have too much time on your hands arguing with me, a "musician" would have better things to do with his time, your a talentless tool

  • @Metalstryke "YOUR an idiot?" LOL Irony is the best humor. Perry was not an original member of Journey. Again, irony is the best humor. I laugh at your ignorance. Ha! :)

  • Augeri is a very good singer and sounds like Perry. But my heart will always go with Steve Perry. I am sure many Journey and classic rock fans agree with my opinion.

  • @kgp8 I love Steve Perry he will always be Journey to me ...Always was always will,,,

  • As of 2011, how great would a Journey tour in 2012-13 be if they included ALL of the present and past members of the band?? Pery, Rollie, Augeri, . what a great tour that would be!!!!!

  • ive met steve perry in 1981

  • Without the original men from Jouney...the band can never be the same...You Guys Were Awsome...but now I do not listen...sorry...

  • Cutting Ross and Steve loose was the shadiest move he'd ever pulled. I lost a bit of respect for him after i heard that

  • I don't care, if steve never felt part of the band; i can't imagine Journey without Perry period.

  • whine whinw whine

  • "we thought we were a family" ...does a family fire the older brother and sell the family dog? what a bunch of sellout pricks.

  • Thank you, tgy156, very much for sharing this. LOVE LOVE LOVE Journey. SA sounded surprisingly similar to SP, but SA's voice didn't quite have the same "soul" as that of SP. How fantastic it was to have grown up listening to these great talents. Thank you, kind Sirs.

  • THERE IS ONLY ONE STEVE PERRY

  • great show, thanx for sharin this

  • might be Steve Perry was frustrated and tired waiting for an awards then disappeared.

  • Awesome show. Thanks for posting this, much appreciated.

  • Thanks for posting this... great stuff!

  • Just watched all 4 parts! Thanks, 45 min. well spent! :)

  • What people don't understand, especially band members, is that the front man is the face of the band to the public. When a front man leaves and is replaced it's never the same. It's not the same band in the public eye. Fair or not that's how it is.

  • no one in Journey is irreplaceable. Not even Neal Schon.

  • Two things I find funny watching this clip ten years later:

    1) Steve Perry thinking a Grammy nomination actually meant the Journey comeback wasn't a "hack thing." Didn't anyone tell him that EVERY legendary group gets Grammy nominations when they make a comeback, whether it's warranted or not?

    2) "He insists he will be heard from again." Ten years later, still not hearing anything.

  • It's very hypocritical of Steve Perry to fire Steve Smith and Ross Valory, replace them with studio musicians and tour for raised on radio.... then turn around and ask Neal and Jonathan not to "fracture" the Journey name by continuing without him. Yep... that is the definition of hypocritical !!!

  • @JunkPuncher01 It sounds more like fickle to me.

  • NO STEVE PERRY=NO JOURNEY

  • Their is no journey without steve perry!

  • Its another case of LSD (Lead singer disease) Dennis DeYoung caught it too and fucked up Styx the same way with his sappy ballads destroying a perfectly good rock band! Remember his Mr.Roboto ego trip bullshit? I remember seeing that tour and we didn't even hear an electric guitar until about a half hour into the show!

  • @Laila9990 Wrong. If you listen to interviews from '83, the other guys in Styx acted just as excited about KWH as Dennis. Were they lying then, or now?Besides, they were four grown men (well, 3 grown men and Chuck). It's not like Dennis physically forced them into anything. And did they come up with anything better? The funny thing is is that for all Tommy's complaining, his tunes are the best on KWH. Just Get Through... is probably his best song ever, and Cold War rocks - shoulda been a hit!

  • Steve Perry is so wishy-washy. Don't get your hopes up. I agree with Schon and Cain - gotta move on. I do like Steve Augeri better than Arnel. Both have the voice, but Augeri looks more like he fits in. Arnel just stands out as a bit of a fraud. He can barely speak English.

  • HEY PEOPLE......It's 2011, perry hasn't been with Journey in over 13 years! Get over it! He joined THEM 33 years ago, and has missed 23 of those years, AND was responsible for NO Journey for 10 years. If you don't like Journey's music without him, DON'T LISTEN TO IT. It stands on its own, without perry

  • @wcrew97 If you say so. I have yet to hear anything they have done with Arnel, Augeri or Soto on the radio. Perry made Journey a legacy and without him they are nothing but a cover band.

  • Steve Augeri didnt even last much, voice burnt out, Arnel will too

  • @Metalstryke They had to lower the keys down form the original keys Perry sang in for Augeri and Pineda because neither of them could handle the intensity of Perry's range. Perry is one of a kind. Nobody can replace him.

  • @jpb219 I know, That was my point. Journey will never have another great song without Him, that nasally Pineda ain't spit

  • Journey will never be the same with Steve Perry. I don't care who they get or what band members they change. They should have left Journey alone and changed the name of the band. Steve made the band and I think out of respect they should have left it that way ,alone.

  • Irzoff is so arrogant. Lot of good he did huh.

  • WHAT SONG IT'S 1:26 - 1:32 ???????

  • @ffpala "Trial By Fire" From the CD of the same name.

  • Augeri is alot easier on the eyes than Arnel and a great singer, sad to see him leave Journey. I think it was the hardest thing in the world for him to step in after Perry and I give him alot of credit. Arnel seems like a great entertainer and has a great voice though, english being his second language makes it painful for me to listen. It seems like he makes the sentences into one word sometimes. Steve Perry will always be my first love and no one can sing Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin but him.

  • Wrong mistake to let go of Herbie and briing on Azoff. Steve should have let that one go

  • To Dean's comment, sorry, I was their. Went to see the replacement and he was no Steve Perry, Arnel isn't either.

  • @MusicfaninMO None of the Journey replacements can hold tunes like Perry, The band has to downtune their instruments for the guys to sing

  • ".....I realized how much fame had sustained me and how it was something that can't float my boat, solely. I can't make it the only thing that makes me feel o.k.".. (Steve Perry). Wise words.

  • No one is taking your place Steve! You could rule once more on your terms!

  • really sad as it was over, one of the biggest bands of the 80's but mostly sadness steve perry me, damn it has a powerful sweet voice and charisma, I regret that things did not end the best way for him, must have been painful regret that is no longer in the band and show us all his great talent, sorry but no one can replace

  • I think Steve Perry did one of the most difficult and courageous things by leaving Journey. There's no telling what could have happened to his well-being if he had stayed in the band with the way things were going. He is absolutely right, there are more important things out there than fame and money, your emotional and physical well-being. And that's why so many performers like Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson & others succumbed to drug addiction and death, because the fame &/or money was it

  • Difficult task to sing after Perry....It takes a lot of courage...and talent!

  • No one is trying to be Steve Perry. You as as individual from everyone else in this world as they are. Never lose your appreciation for the past but living in the past is no way to grow. Enjoy Augeri and Arnel as you enjoy everyone else in your life.

  • jc is a huge big whiney baby!!!! awww he never wanted to do anything. but he looooved being a a phone douche!

  • @jeanmarie7 your just being jealous of his awesome piano skills

  • Comment removed

  • Steve Augeri surely not Steve Perry..Steve Augeri is having a great voice too but not like Steve Perry's voice...

Steve Perry's voice is very signature and unique. No one can copy...

Come back soon to Journey Steve (Perry)....You deserves to be in the Journey..

  • I absolutely love VH1 behind the music . Journey ranks as 1 of my favs, does ANYBODY have Weird Al's BTM to post? I know he had 1 back in '99 but I only saw it 1 time

  • There are two sides here. Steve was fried and left but that left the other band members in the lurch because they were doing their jobs and wanted to continue working. With Steve's exit their identity as Journey came to an abrupt end. The flip side is Steve needed to take care of himself, which I understand, but the band going on after waiting around for a year is the risk Steve took. Unfortunately, the end result just isn't Journey.

  • @rltrchick well put mate.

  • I saw Steve Perry without the other guys in DC in 1995. But the musicians who played with him that night sounded just like Journey. Still, you could tell something was missing. I saw the new Journey in concert a couple of years back and ended up leaving early because it just wasn't the same. Whatever magic those guys created, they created together. But if I had to choose one over the other, Steve Perry would be it. Without his voice it's just a cover band and that's sad.

  • Steve Perry is the best! Incomparable!

  • There is no Journey without Steve Perry.

  • That was a fantastic Behind The Scenes...I had always wondered what happened with Journey and now through this, I know what happened. I was a teen in the early 80's and remember Journey fondly, along with a lot of other bands. Like @fistazul had to say. I totally agree.

  • steve smith is tha man behind the drums on journey...period....deen i love you man but their is not the sound of the drums the same without steve smith on drums.....

  • Augeri is Kenny G's long lost twin brother

  • Is there an outtake of Herbie Herbert's quote of Steve Perry not feeling like he was part of Journey: "That's like the Pope saying he never felt Catholic". Somewhere on the net I read that he said that for this "Behind the Music" but it was edited out.

Boy do I miss Behind the Music. One hour about a band you forgot about years ago and now you'll always think of them. Journey and Styx are two prime examples for me. I guess they ran out of bands to profile.

  • @Inglewolf That's exactly what happened. They've did some on the rappers and other posers. What they're doing now is something called Behind the Music: Remastered, which is adding to these same interviews, and telling them what the bands/artists have been doing the past 10-15 years.

  • We are all talking about the voice / singing and NOT the person Correct ? Because they all sound the same.

  • Weare all talking about the voice / singing and NOT the person Correct ? Because they all sound the same.

  • Steve Perry once said" Never say Never". Don'tStop Believing" Perryon ~ 2011and Beyond!

  • I don't blame Steve Augeri or Arnel Pineda for joining Journey. It certainly gave them a great opportunity. I just wish Journey went with a front man who didn't sound like Perry but could still sing the old songs well and help them create new ones that didn't sound like they were trying to rehash the past.

  • This whole entire story not only makes me sick, emotionally, gut the whole damn thing, just absolutely makes me cry!, especially the last w parts! Even when I watch it, damn it, I'm in such awe!

  • johnathan cain kinda looks like billy bob thornton

  • It amazes me Perry was so unwilling to not get the surgery so he could get the tour going. But, later on, after they dropped him, he is willing to have the surgery. One for all and all for Steve.

  • @1danrobbins

That's 'cause he's a pain in the ass. He became a primadonna! I'm glad they went on without him.

  • @Zeitgeist74 Couldn't of said it better myself.

  • I don't think anyone has mentioned that Steve Smith in the 1990s appeared to resemble Rob Halford.

  • Why did they not mention anything about classic drummer Steve Smith's departure from the band?? As a musician, I feel his presence in the band REALLY worked wonders for their rhythm. Such an interesting drummer to listen to....It was always a mystery to me why he left....

  • @DuaLeaD Yes they made a mention of it .. steve had him and the original bassist fired before they started recording raised on radio

  • Man, it seems like with Steve Augeri and Arnel Pineda they were/are looking for Steve Perry's voice w/o the Steve Perry body... Too bad. Just seems classless and disrespectful.

  • @TheGooberDoo I really think Pineda's voice isn't that comparable to Perry's. It is so rich and the more I listen to it the more I enjoy it.

  • Steve Augerie is a great guy but he is no Steve Perry niether is the one they have now,

  • Sorry, but Steve had enough time to work through his problems. He chose this lifestyle a long time ago. If you have a job and you don't want to work, you will get replaced, end of story.

  • @dharmaseed Damn good point!!! (Smile)

  • @dharmaseed Man, you really hit the nail on the head.

  • Whos that lady singing Seperate Ways? Oh it's Steve Augeri my mistake. Screw you Neal Schon

  • I can understand Steve saying he never felt part of the band. When you watch their Videos, and I've watched some I can tell you, there doesn't seem to be any connection between the guys. The only one enjoying themselves is Steve, the rest are just going through the motions. It's like ok, is it the end yet give me the cheque and I'm off. Why shouldn't Steve have his privacy after a gig.

  • Steve Augeri is NOT Steve Perry with a perm. He's ok, but he's NO Steve Perry.

  • @CountryRoadTrip Agreed. There will Never be another Steve Perry.

  • @CountryRoadTrip I know, can you believe that? It's like comparing our Steve who is pure whipped cream to that artificial dairy creamer stuff.

  • I hope one day before i die that Steve Perry & Journey can tour again and stay together forever

  • Where are the rest of the parts?

  • @eljay345 Check up top for tgy156's other videos.

  • Comment removed

  • @eljay345 i believe there are only 4 parts. Without the commercials, it only ran for around 42/43 minutes.

  • @ToddSweeneyOnce Are there only 1-4 parts?

  • @eljay345 I think so.

  • @eljay345 Sorry I didn't realise. Someone else posted it and they had 1-9 parts on the title but 6-9 was not there so I thought this was the same.

  • I really think that this is the saddest part of this story. I think that Neal and Jon were not supportive, and Steve had gone through enough hell as it was. I'll never forget the day that I went to that concert 7 years ago, and saw those pictures and even now, almost 10 years I still am hurt, deeply and very much in awe.
