Foresters should be planting sequoias and redwoods. In a few hundred years, they'll be 200 feet tall; fastest growing trees in the world. Takes a thousand years for them to get girthy, though...
I've lived near Big Basin State Park for some 10 years and now near Yosemite and the big red woods for 10 years. You don't see the 10 foot firs and big redwoods much but they are still out there. Mostly in the park.
96% of the old growth forest is gone. I think we can avoid cutting the last 4%. I'm not normally a tree-hugging environmentalist type, but it's seriously fffed up to kill a 2000 year old tree to make some crappy ranch homes that will be demolished in 50 years. I live in Oregon, (in a crappy ranch home) I've seen the remaining big ones up close. If it's older than your grandpappy, leave it alone. Plenty of "second growth" to cut nowadays. Old growth forests support more species than 2nd.
A Supreme Court Judge in Victoria BC made a ruling on the cutting of an old growth forest. While his 70 some page judgment wasn't popular with the green peacers, he had a damn good point. Don't stand there and preach how we CAN'T cut those trees unless you have an alternate form of income for those people. Welfare is NOT an alternate income. He basically told them all (tree huggers) to go the hell back home and stay there. All in moderation I guess
@WaterlooTriumphGuy That is a bit like the judge saying, we can do anything we want, ethical, environmental or not, that is so short sighted. That is how we have cut the 96% with that attitude, an attitude of I don't give a shit about anyone else or anything else as long as I am ok.
@CustomCarpentryUK True BUT, they are informed in no uncertain terms NEVER EVER make ANY judgement that shall reduce income tax paid by the people, because that's where your income comes from. You will NEVER find any judge make such rulings anywhere ever. Regardless of how the circumstance are presented. They will end up in a soup line so god damn fast... & they know it.
I come from a small logging comunity. There isn't a home in town that doesn't have pictures like these on its walls. I am currently away at college and feeling a little home sick. These pictures reminded me of home. Some of them were even taken near my hometown! Thank you for making this video. Those giants are still out there. They are not all gone, you just have to know where to look. Trees that size are now only cut down for saftey. Lumber mills aren't tooled to handle them anymore.
Surprised to see all the hate for these lumberjacks... they did things diffrent back then, they werent worried about depleting the old growth, just feeding themselves and their family, what would you do? As of today the land is managed more effectively then most think. Also, I sure do appreciate living in this nice warm house of mine, im a strange person though.
@Dregowz its easy if your fit, If I could get half way through a mature 1.5 ft diameter hard wood branch with a hatchet at the age of 8 you can do it. I stopped because I got bored and used a chainsaw. as a helpful tip cut a wedge shape.
@treekiller66 ...nice name by the way.. but agreed, i believe since 1900 nearly 60% of tree growth has been plenished? Here in CT we just had that freak snowstorm with all of our old trees with leaves on them still. Way too much damage and not enough tree cutting!
Most of these old growth trees give off more co2 then oxygen, mow em down and plant some healthy second growth I say, check your facts tree huggers,we have more healthy oxygen producing trees now then we ever did!
@ast0f In New Brunswick this is almost the only job available in my home settlement. sometimes you come across old growth on my granddaddies land about 14-17 feet in diameter. But it don't last long after you tell someone about it. too many crackheads looking for a fix. there was an old bird eye maple that went missing, the guy must of got 6 to 9 thousand for it.
@ast0f You need to do a bit of research before you start yapping like that, because so far, you are the only one that sounds "Stupid & Ignorant". Most of the oxygen in our atmosphere comes from the ocean & biology that grows there. Trees actually account for a small percentage of oxygen. Do a Google search for fitoplankton & read a bit before going off with your dick in your own mouth.!
@Muddy69Honda ... I'm not knocking on there work... Just making a point that this was the day of true honest hard days work... You worked off all this fat of todays' generations...
Tha only excuse for cutting down a 1000-2000 year-old tree is ignorance. There has never been a deficiency in lumber, ever, which contemplates tha need ta lay down tha oldest living creatures in all tha world. Ignorance and haste. Ignorance can be defined as "should have known better, but did it anyway".
@0Surfdude your typical of the enviro nazi surf dudes who have been conned into the so called green agenda. Too much much pot mate ; time you grew up. @0Surfdude how much will be enough for these guys? - they've only cut 90% or more? Makes me sick. The tourism that these trees and the water these trees purify way out does any $ the lumber is worth. I don't blame the guy in1912 but the guys today are immoral
@ShalomYal well u know , huge demand to build houses means bigger and more trees are in demand to get cut down , if u dont like it start thinking of a better solution
@Muddy69Honda There are more than enough trees to build houses - this old growth lumber is not needed to build houses. Will the world be a better, more beautiful place when these thousand year old trees are just a video on youtube? I ask again - what % will be enough? so if we keep on cutting - the trees are gone in 5 years - then what - we have to find another source any way - so why not save a little and find an answer today!!!!
Its absolutely amazing to me how they cut trees of those size with the lack of equipment they had... I am a fellow logger ( Truck Driver ) But I know what its like to cut timber.. Im ashamed to say that I was tired after running a saw all day long for more money an hour than these guys made all week... Props to old time loggers. Thank you for paving the way so people like me could have a job someday
@prattyk82 - Once the inertia was broken, the weight would melt the ice on the tracks the runners ran in and the melt water acted as a lubricant. Plus the horses had cleats on their shoes for better traction. Sometimes they would loose teams going down hill when a sled broke loose from a cable brake but the dead horses didn't go to waste...
@browneyes4 geez i hot u dont use wood products or live in a house with wood or live ina city that was one a forest but got cut down these men died for the wood products u couldnt live without look at ur self ur a hipicrit
@huntinforit Uhm, because there where no limits back then. Cut what you want to cut, use what you want to use. There is no going back those days because we've cut down most of those giants, and used up most of the resources. That doesn't sound all that 'great' to me you know..

Thanks for the video. I can appreciate, just a little bit, how hard those men
worked( I only cut "part time"), my hard hat is off to them. On a side note,
New Hampshire was more than 80% clear cut 100 years ago, it is more than
80% forested right now. Conservation of our forests does work and is working.
And we even have some untouched "old growth" still standing.
Work safe.

@NHlocal I am happy to hear that. Who replants the trees?
CustomCarpentryUK 2 months ago
@CustomCarpentryUK
Hello,
It wasn't any one person, company, or organization. A combination of
all of them and of course natural reforestation. Google NH Nursery:History
to see a little history of how it was done. Pretty much the same as the other
states are taking care of their forests I believe.Thanks.
Work safe.
NHlocal 2 months ago
@NHlocal Thanks i looked up that search, do you work for that nursery? It is nice to see positive news about reforestation like that.
CustomCarpentryUK 2 months ago
@CustomCarpentryUK
No, I don't work for the nursery. But, the more tree work I do
the more I want to learn about tree work and how to better take
of our forests. Thanks for the interest and the comments.
Work safe!
NHlocal.
