  • At least on Windows they have that little thing called sound!

  • @Fridgemusa The sound during gameplay was great. My desktop video recorder at the time didn't record sound. Also, it never crashed the whole time I played it. Not too many people can say that about Windows gaming.

  • ROFL...(Sarcasm Alert) REALLY no crashes during gameplay that's amazing! Hot Zigadee I gotta install me Linux straight away! (News Flash) webbhawk I too can play Doom 3 with no crashes! Wow you really are a tenacious Linux fanboi and I think your dedication is admirable but not everyone has crashes in games on Windows! Also Doom 3 is a pretty old game now and runs pretty stable on most systems! By the way there are a lot more games out there than just Doom 3 how many other games have you got?

  • @webbhawk You should use Windows, it records sound.

  • @Fridgemusa here on YouTube search for "Unreal Tournament 2004 in Debian (LINUX)"

  • Well Windows was better than Linux

  • Yes.

  • @KiLerZolika windows is never better then linux lol linux is awesome well i have spent 7 years using windows programming making my anti virus shit like that but ima program in linux cause you fuck head windows bitches suck

  • is doom 3 free for linux?

  • no of course not. it requires you to own a retail copy of Doom 3 for windows (or mac if you're a cyber wizard)

  • Wait a minute.. so Linux requires you to buy the windows version of Doom 3? Doesn't that mean you need wine or a VM to run it?

  • no, it doesn't need virtualisation. all the guys at id multicode their games so that they'll work for open source. if you're really slick you can make the pc version run of a mac, but it took me weeks to get it right and id knows it's difficult so they released the mac version. but the thing is made to run on windows and linux so it's easy.

  • Ok...so when you buy the game, it comes as source code which you have to compile?

  • i can't be bothered explaining it here. if you go to gamespot, and go to doom 3 and then downloads on the left, there'll be something in there that'll explain it to you. it's worth checking out, not least because it actually runs better on linux than on x86 windows xp

  • Biased much? What a load of shit that it runs better on Linux! Based on your video it doesn't look like it runs to smooth to me compared to my Windows machine! I don't have anything against Linux it definately has it's uses but gaming is certainly not a strong point in most Linux Distros!

  • i don't really care that you think it's shit. honest, doesn't bother me. id triple code their games for all platforms, and it just so happens that the new versions of ubuntu (as well as snow leopard) handle it better than a nine-year-old windows os.

  • @naryanr I run Win 7 64 bit Ultimate and that is not nine years old! Hey I've tried a few Linux distros (Ubuntu, Xandros, Linspire) and even set up a CentOS server and all were very reliable but for sheer variety of games Linux just doesn't cut it, but what's really sad is that you Linux fanbois can't even admit that Linux support for games sux! Game developers know that all to well why do you think the majority of developers code their games for windows? Linux might be great for games 1 day...

  • @Fridgemusa maybe! ;-)

  • @Fridgemusa Its running slow cause a. video capture and gaming in linux a is a recipie for slow frame rates, honestly I used to have my doubts until I installed Doom 3 for Linux myself. Doom 3 actaually has a smoother frame rate in Linux than in windows same machine. I dont know why, however I do know that OpenGL scripts tend to compile faster than D3D scripts...

  • They have an installer that reads the data off the disc.

  • @JohnnyAlpha8 no it comes with files on the disk you download the linux client off id softwares site and you put the disks in and copy files from there just search google on how to install doom 3 on linux

  • Wow, whats your computer specs? That was freaking amazing. You have the recorder on, Doom 3 playing (such minimal delay too!) and compiz fusion running too right? Cool~~

  • Yeah, but the kernel with Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex had some problems with Doom 3 in particular. So hopefully it will be fixed later. But for some reason I got it working using those commands in the console. :)

  • do you experience jerky framerates while playing? try com_preciseTic 0 and (or only) vid_restart after loading. switch to the PDA in Doom 3 and the zoomsetting should go away.

  • The desktop recorder shows the framerate a bit choppy but actual gameplay was smooth and fluid.

  • howd u do this

  • @thepwner7 The neede software is at ID software's site. They make many of their games Linux compatible.

  • Awesome

  • el wine es un emulador amigaso, xq te pensas que se ejecutan programas de win, de todas formas, el doom 3 esta para windows y para ubuntu

  • wine is not an emulator

  • what is wine?

  • When you compare it to the fact that you can run doom, quake1 and quake2 at full frame rate and textures on a phone...There is nothing major about this, but I still love my Linux only OS.

  • @conorsulli I don't really think Doom and Quake are good comparisons in this instance. Unless of course you're saying they run better on your phone than in Windows. lol

  • @webbhawk no no, Just that there for a while ubuntu had real issues with intel performance, I couldn't understand why my phone ran it better. drivers have improved since then (my other comment is like 1year old).

  • Where did you get the packages to run it? Also, what desktop are you using? I know Ubuntu comes with GNOME and the ability to add KDE and Xfce, but yours isn't any of those. Also, nice system. It looks like you're running it in full detail with a 1280 by 1024 resolution.

  • I know that the Enlightenment WM can do that dock thing

  • Its Gnome with AWN (Avant-window-navigator)

  • No wine? ...I'm impressed :)

  • me too, I couldnt do the same with unreal tourment3

  • all ID games run on linux

  • Not all but a rather large number have been made compatible. Thankfully they value OpenGL unlike everyone else >:/

  • OpenGL ftw, fuck Directx

  • @Amebixfan The Irony is..THEY LOOK VIRTUALLY THE SAME SIDE BY SIDE! I mean it, look at the Open GL vs Direct x 11 videos, they speak for themselves. I honestly dont care which one I am using as long as the game runs at a decent framerate, which with OPENGL usually is the case...

  • @stopthrm They do look similar, but OpenGL is free, DirectX is not.

  • @Amebixfan Yes, open standards make life easier for everybody.

  • Hasn't anyone told you that Wine Is Not an Emulator (WINE).

    Good vid though.

  • Oh, sorry about that. I just went to the wine website and saw what the letters stood for: Wine Is Not an Emulator.

My mistake. Doesn't matter though for this video, the game runs directly on linux without any sort of help from outside software. Better?

  • I was just giving you a hard time. I play this, Quake 4, and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. Love them and love that ID supports the Linux OS. Unreal Tournament 3 will own when the client comes to us.

I'll have to play you sometime in deathmatch or maybe even a good co-op game. Fun stuff.

  • It is great. But I think if you can add some music to the video, it will be better.

    :)
