@XeenWoozy Our society is bad for wasting exorbitant amounts of food. Not so much on my place though. Also, I've seen chickens after a fox has gotten in with them, believe me, this is gentle in comparison. It is harsh to see the first few times though, but I tried to commit suicide when I was younger, and after passing out from bleeding I don't really feel as bad for the chickens. I agree with you about the slaughterhouses. My remedy to that is to buy locally or grow it myself.

I buy mostly locally grown, or grow myself and my food bill for my family is literally half of what any of my friends have for their food bill. @AntiSpeciesistWorld It all really depends on how things are done. The way I do it is very good for the animal, and the environment. I keep free range chickens that live almost entirely off of wild forage. They eat the ticks so I don't need to use nasty pesticides. Even if your a vegetarian you contribute to the suffering of animals and the environment. Your food needs, pesticides, herbicides, constant watering, loads of gas to ship it to you, and all kinds of animals get killed during harvest.

Your vegetables needed pesticides, herbicides, and petroleum to harvest and ship. The well water, and creaks around where I live are poison because of the big farms.

Slitting the jugular is EXCEEDINGLY slow way of bleeding to death. NO manner of justification can prove it is painless or non-traumatic.

If you cut it head up then the blood rushes down and the head being the highest part of the chicken loses blood first, so it goes to sleep.
But if you are cutting it upside down, then the blood is rushing through its head and the pressure isn't gone until all blood is. It can go into a system shock and probably like us get a rush of adrenaline, but not pass out from lack of blood (could pass out from other things though)

If you buy chicken from a big brands like tyson and come on here and see this is wrong then you're insanely hypocritical. You'd be surprised what they feed and do to those chickens at the huge farms tyson supplies their chicken from. They're not the only brand that does it. But to raise a chicken feed it well and let it live a good life which is not only better for the chicken but better for the quality of the meat as well. Nothing wrong with this at all.

We have done our own beef and chicken, It makes me appreciate every meal for the sacrifice the animal has given us. I will never ever be wasteful of my food and I teach my grandchildren to be grateful too. I think it is a natural process in life and with the big Agri-business and it's dangers, I am just glad we have the space to raise our own.
I truly believe that one should kill an animal at least once if they want to eat meat. I will see if I am able to do it, and if I can't take it, then I should not have the right to eat meat. Hopefully I'll be alright.

@AntiSpeciesistWorld It all really depends on how things are done. The way I do it is very good for the animal, and the environment. I keep free range chickens that live almost entirely off of wild forage. They eat the ticks so I don't need to use nasty pesticides. Even if your a vegetarian you contribute to the suffering of animals and the environment. Your food needs, pesticides, herbicides, constant watering, loads of gas to ship it to you, and all kinds of animals get killed during harvest.

@fishtankbank Yeah but my imperfections despite my best attempts to protect animals lives doesn't make eating meat any more ethical, but I am for a more greener and eco-friednly method of harvesting fruit & veg and want the food I get to be as friendly as possible to animals & the environment. the amount of suffering caused by fruit & veg is many magnitudes less than that caused by the meat industry, the only reason I consume fruit & veg is because its necessary since I don't eat meat.

Your vegetables needed pesticides, herbicides, and petroleum to harvest and ship. And on top of that your vegetables directly contribute to the deaths of thousands of animals, getting caught in harvesting machinery, hit by trucks, poisoned by agricultural chemicals. The well water, and creaks around where I live are poison because of the big farms.

If you grow all your food organically then none of that applies to you. The way I do it chickens is THE best solution. They turn food scraps, weeds, and bugs into beautiful meat and eggs just in my back yard. They also live a wonderful life. I pet them, and keep them safe from predetors. They have cool water in the summer and warm water in the winter.

@axelroach Yes he went up through the top of the mouth. Because their brains are so small he would essentially be severing the brain in half by doing that and the chicken would instantly die. Bleeding out isn't painful though ask anyone who has tried to commit suicide that way, and it will ensure that the chicken is at least unconscious before you stab their head.

My dad used to butcher chickens at home when I was a kid, sharp blade, wooden chopping block, tied up chicken. One swing, neck severed, spinal cord cut, no pain, no trauma, nothing! Clean kill, and for those who want it, the blood pours out since the heart keeps beating. Its brain dead, not heart dead yet.
Slitting the jugular is EXCEEDINGLY slow way of bleeding to death. NO manner of justification can prove it is painless or non-traumatic.
Slice a vein in your arm or thigh to find out.

@KallyJones I would argue No, especially when they are upside down.
If you cut it head up then the blood rushes down and the head being the highest part of the chicken loses blood first, so it goes to sleep.
But if you are cutting it upside down, then the blood is rushing through its head and the pressure isn't gone until all blood is. It can go into a system shock and probably like us get a rush of adrenaline, but not pass out from lack of blood (could pass out from other things though)

If you buy chicken from a big brands like tyson and come on here and see this is wrong then you're insanely hypocritical. You'd be surprised what they feed and do to those chickens at the huge farms tyson supplies their chicken from. They're not the only brand that does it. But to raise a chicken feed it well and let it live a good life which is not only better for the chicken but better for the quality of the meat as well. Nothing wrong with this at all.

We have done our own beef and chicken, It makes me appreciate every meal for the sacrifice the animal has given us. I will never ever be wasteful of my food and I teach my grandchildren to be grateful too. I think it is a natural process in life and with the big Agri-business and it's dangers, I am just glad we have the space to raise our own.
