I think as God intended the preaching of the Word, it is supposed to take the listener to the throne and place him in the hands of Christ. Anything short of that is not really preaching as the Word intends it. Most preaching in churches today, sadly, is legalistic. Do this, don't do that. It is not Christ-centered. Only Christ saves; only Christ sanctifies. Only Christ takes us to the Father.
This is great stuff. I like what he says about drawing conclusions from lifes experiences and conflicts. Conflict is a powerful element of story telling that gives a message depth, like GK says. Too often sermons provide simple answers that do not reflect the complexity of life, or the weight, and often heavy, messages and verses found in scripture (like Christ's messages that relate wealth and materialism to condemnation).
I wish more pastors would heed Mr. Keillor's advice and stop trying to turn sermons into performances. Thanks for posting this series of conversations.
