I think the boy was lying to her... He made a bet with his friends to try and pull her....If not then why do the friends continue to hold up the money and seem surprised when he tries to deny it? Plus there's no real reason why he would randomly show up at her house.... The whole interaction between them is weird because he was just a random guy in the hall on the way to the woodshop...If it wasn't a bet, I don't buy the relationship at all. It's strange... Bad writing at it's finest

I'll explain the fire scene for those who don't get it. If the guy was a ghost, how is it possible for him to effect the physical world in such a way that it causes a big enough fire to burn down anything? He's a ghost people, so of course the fire would be flat and not spark any real flames. I think also that it was dumb of them to get up and walk away when there was something on fire in the wood shop. If the school burns down, it is their fault. :)
