Steely Dan on tour is about musicians listening to each other and friendship with the audience. Also, people get to listen to chords that go back to the jazz age. You don't get that with the big rock bands of past. It's part throwback that turns into something fresh and new.
I don't think touring or "live" performance was ever a high priority with Becker/Fagen. It was the finished product that they focused on, i.e. the album. And honestly, how many bands are as good "live"? I can't remember anyone ever raving about the Beatles "live." Even Lennon stated that their best playing days were "back in the Cavern." It's the rare band that can be as impressive (or even better) on-stage. Maybe The Who, Zeppelin, Springsteen, but the list is short. Peace
Steely Dan was never a good touring band. They were never able to replicate they're overproducedalbums live for an audience. Great songwriters, but their delivery was always inconsistant and disappointing
Everyone is right. The women are good singers but it is just missing something from the David Palmer original version. I guess time marches on but some of these updated versions just remind me of Vegas lounge music. Sorry...
Well mikey...in case you didn't already know, he didn't sing the lead on this when they recorded it. (One of the few, if only times, he DIDN'T sing lead on a Steely Dan song) He's a back-up singer on the track. So you shouldn't have expected to hear him sing lead here...and it shouldn't matter WHO does. Have you checked out the videos of Phoebe Snow singing it with them? You have one thing right - this song IS a classic from the Steely Dan repetoire!
Thanks Chris! I'm proud to admit to being a Steely Dan fan! I haven't been too terribly impressed by Walter Becker's solo stuff, though. I'm glad I had the opportunity to see them live - even though it was several years ago at a great outdoor concert venue that unfortunately no longer exists in the Chicago area....it was the BEST way to see and hear them!
I must have at least 9 different versions of the backup singers singing Dirty Work on MP3 - and I dig em' all. Great song! I keep rediscovering the Can't Buy a Thrill album and every time it blows my mind all over again. Steely Dan is the TRUTH!
Saw them on the first gig of this tour in May 2007. This was my favorite part of the show (except for the loud drunks at the festival). Saw them on tour a year earlier in Nashville and the version of Dirty Work that night was SOOOOO MOVING. It was GREAT!
I saw steely dan in london beginning of july, dirty work was BRILLIANT! favourite had to be my old school. Also played Bonn, get some good audiences there.
Me too, I loved it as I heard it live in Brussels. So I knew for sure this number was the one to tape in Bonn! A live cd playing with this band would be awesome!
Although she can sing, she absolutely butchers the original melody.

The girl singers do a great job on the lead vocals. Trumpet man sounds great on his solo, too.
