a lot of RARE RECORDS still floating around in the Brits homeland. why does it take so long for Americans to recognize value? We produce them and England capitalizes on them. We did get even with the BEATLES though, produced in England valued in America.
It's pathetic to pay 000's of quid for a record. Why?. It won't make you a talented musician or singer. All it will do to you is send you into a state of paranoia. I've got an original copy of this record, but i'd sooner burn it than sell it.
@superfunky2006 I agree with your big rant overall you are soo right but....dont call me a sad brit who thinks they own U.S. soul music......what happened more often than not was soul fans here made soulful dance music artist's popular after the song failed to char or sell in the states, its a simple fact, Northern soul is a thing of he past now.....we call it modern soul.
Agree about Johnny manship though, a crook then and still is now
relly im furous...i got bored of this record 20 years ago, it was overplayed then, and booted on a kent comp ! move on, progression...whats annoying me is you seem to be going on about the value, and what it went for in money, who cares if some rich rock star paid a lot for it, what about the song, did frank wilson make or produce any other good music, oh no, just it finished at 25,000 pounds.. you lot making trophy records make it hard for soul fans by inflating prices !
rare for rares sake...as berry gordy himself said, its whats in the grooves that count, not how many sad w"nkers can you find in an ebay auction for a 1 copie of a 45 which had a general release later, ha ha ha...sad...
you lot are soooo sad.. a few brits on a small island think they own all u.s. soul music cause some journalist coined a phrase in the 70s...the only thing 25000 grand proves id that 1 rich c*unt has more money than another rich c*unt.. im an old soulboy and im glad to distance myself from the northern soul scene, i dont use the term northern soul anymore, i just say soul...tooo trendy...rich people like james trouble from the city tryna impress his city mates.. the only one winning is manship
forcing prices up out of the reach of more genuine soul fans whove been into it 20 years plus minium..and this record is totally overrated, and available anywhere, millions of better records around..this record has probably never been played at an allnighter, and has anyone noticed the difference, no cause its just the colour of the paper label thats physically different. sad men with testoserone imballances, need to prove something, ive got this 45 and you havnt...and i know my soul music
and you can find loads of great 45s on lps for peanuts, don gardner were gonna make it, and lavern baker im the one to do it, 2 examples off the top of my head, both on original lps, NOT REISSUES ! i paid 10 pounds each, 45s on manship would have cost me 400 pounds, and when i play them no one cares and not many know the difference either..
and this record is totally overrated, and available anywhere, millions of better records around..this record on that soul label has probably never been played at an allnighter, and has anyone noticed the difference, no cause its just the colour of the paper label thats physically different. sad men with testoserone imballances, need to prove something, ive got this 45 and you havnt...especially when this record is easy to get.. everybody wants to be a dj, or record collector, boring sad people
For me it's about the lyrics, the passion, the driving bassline. It's true that the songs rare nature keeps it exclusive, but not illusive, it's available on many compilations, hell, it's even on youtube.
I don't mean to be obtuse, but I read so much about this record. Do people really like this record because it is a great song, or is it the fact that it is so rare that people have fallen in love with it? I mean no harm against the record at all, but I am so sincere in my question. Also, I live in the US and cannot really grasp the Northern Soul scene. Sometimes I feel like I need to cross the waters with my obscure 45s and see what is hip and what is not hip for that whole scene.
This song is probably overrated because of its rarity. There are others like that as well, but songs don't need to be rare to be hits in the Northern Soul scene. Some get quite a bit of radio play on oldies stations today. The idea wasn't to find really obscure records, but finding great records that had been overlooked when they were first released. Nearly every major city in the US has a soul club that do NS nights. Nothing like Wigan, but you won't find that in the UK now either.
I think its a great record as for a fan it has the main ingredients of strings, dance tempo, simple singalong lyrics, sax break, and it works for the northern dance style of dance movements, but I suspect its added rareity draws extra fans
Lots and lots of talk aboutn the price of this record.... but you know what ... it is a great great record and it says everything that , so embarrassed with risches, was Motown records they could just forget it even existed.... KTF
