  • How many pounds of clay did you use?

  • Man, this is awesome! I'm taking Beginning Ceramics for the second time (because I can) and I thought I'd just come and check this out. I'll have to make my bowls bigger, though. Wonder how well I can do on ebay if I manage to throw that fast and that well.

  • @Lavenderrose73 If you made a ton of little bowls and sold them cheap enough to sell them all you probably could have gotten a better price for your soul with out all the bowls

  • @timseepots Well, my soul belongs to Jesus so it's out of the picture. Other than that, I needed to take 2 filler classes since I'm only missing one single credit to graduate and still have to pay the 1-6 credit tuition to get that credit. I figured by taking this class again, I'd still have access to a wheel and kiln, and I'd have a chance to refine my newly tapped skill.

  • Wow. Inspirational.

  • Thanks so much for your eduspots the tea pot one has been really helpful! I do have a question though. If you don't ever wedge up your clay, just use it directly from the bag, have you ever had something explode in the kiln from air bubbles in the clay? PS the video response of throwing a pot in 15 seconds is hilarious

    Nancy

  • @ndimattia Clay explodes b/c of how fast it is heated up a clay filled with bubbles can be fired if time is taken much of my work has enclosed cavities that to not explode. I do not wedge a lot only pieces that are bigger than 10#s.

  • AMAZING. Now I'll have to do a set of bowls for the wife. And I've only had one lesson.

  • JEALOUS

  • Looks scrumcious

  • Quick question, since now i have a different view on the video. When you put the rib in the clay, do you go all the way to the bottom with the rib, or just half way?

  • @acidfriend47 all the way... like a double rainbow

  • wow this is very cool. I can't even do one in my class period. I want to get better at the potters wheel for sure,

    spectacular!

  • I'm with CourtneyRuns, I'd still be centering after 2 minutes. Of course I've only had 2 classes and some practice time. Your video was great. Thanks for sharing.

  • I'd still be centering after 2 minutes... lol. Amazing!! :)

  • 6 bowls in 2 minutes :) 2 bowls in 30 minutes xD

  • Is there a setting you can flip that will allow me to see this vid on my iPhone?

    Thanks!

  • Do you have a vid or some instructions on how to make one of your fancy sponge/killer needle sticks?

    Cheers

    James

  • Wow that is a fast ass wheel :) by the way what tool do you use at the end to open the bowls?

  • @acidfriend47 I think he used a rib tool

    :)

  • @shmary45 I tried it with a rib tool but it leaves an uneven shape at the bottom

  • EASY MOENY

  • show....off lol but that was amazing :D i think I'll try that when i get better at rising the wall.

  • I'm soooooooooooo tempted to say "OMG I'MMA A NOOB BEGINNER!!!! CAN I DO THAT?!?!!?"

I'm tempted to try it, but, as I said, I'm a very beginner, I just learned how to trim [[and I can't make the "foot" right]].

  • Hahaha I used to do this in ceramics. I would make everyone bowls and they would pay me two dollars... The teacher never caught on so i graduated and after two years in that class i made $400.

  • MAN IF I HAD SEEN THIS VIDEO WHEN I HAD TO DO 14 WHEEL PROJECTS FOR CERAMICS I WOULD OF GOTTEN AN EASY A LOL THAT WAS PRETTY AWSOME

  • love speed throwing. won a couple competitions for it. very impressive

  • ceramic is umbilievable thing

  • If you're trying to learn how to center. Throw your ball down as close to the middle as possible. Then start the wheel, now press down with one hand and out away from your body with the other. Keep the wheel moving at the same time.

  • I just started throwing on a wheel 3 days ago. Any tips you can give? I am on a kick wheel tho. I know, its not the best.

  • what the fuck....D: i totally SUCK at opening and pullingD: thats my only problem i center fineee but i cant do it in 4 seconds..

  • Hi Tim,

Thank you so much for sharing your expertise! I am just learning to throw. I do have a question...

When I make a bowl, I end up with a kind of shoulder ring on the inside of the bowl near the bottom. I know bowls are supposed to have a smooth curve all the way up. How can I create this when I use your "V" method of pulling up? The "V" automatically creates a deeper center point. If I try to push the ring down with a rib the bowl collapses.

    Thank you,

    Poppy Singer

  • It sounds like you have learned a lot you just need to put it in practice. If your bowls are collapsing you are most likely moving out too much for how up your moving up. the bump in the bottom side can be gotten rid of by engaging the rib and moving up in a constant sweep out. The fact that you are setting that bar for yourself means a great deal. Professional potters of 30 years still have that ugly bump. Keep it up.

  • Meanwhile, I'm still trying to center my clay...lol.

  • i always get the S crack in the bottom of the pots when i throw off the hump. I just dont do it any more. I still make my lids this way with no problems.

  • perfect song!!!! and great job by the way!!!

  • You are a superheroe potter! I am new to it and really enjoy watching your videos. Thanks!

    great song btw~~

  • That's amazing--it usually takes me at least 3 minutes to get it centered well.

  • hope you got a good pug mill....

  • what would i do with a pug mill?

  • I meant because if you're doing that all day long you are gonna have alot of clay to reclaim.. i was totally kidding though, you do great work!

    thanks for the videos :)

    josh

  • Man If I did that all day I would kill myself. Its just practice the faster you do things you dont much care about the quicker you get at the things you do.

  • could you post a video on how to do this plz?

  • hi could i use a blue rib to pull the wall up?

  • you can pul up with whatever you would like. I like to use my fingers though

  • I think I'll challenge you :D

    Hopefully, I can remember o:

  • So..

What Did You Use To Pull Up The Wall

    :]

  • my fingers to open it i used a green rib

  • Comment removed

  • that was amazing your videos are helpful and very entertaning thanks and dont stop uploading thanxs.

  • damn... lots of bowls, I guess you have a lot of guests to feed cerial. nice work.

  • damn whats the hurry ?? my wife cant kick my wheel that fast. lol. good job, will show to my students

  • Poor wife... what about a pet? I always wanted to hook a dog up to the kick wheel.

  • Can't wait to get a wheel apposed to pinch or coil pottery as i am just now. Then i can make a responce to this. 6 lumpy pots on the floor in 2 mins. Good job man. Pretty amazing

  • Finally a response. Thats what I was hoping people would do. Trying something like throwing quickly is often overlooked as a skill. But as a tool for learning the more pots you make the more you learn and the bigger risks you are willing to take. If you do get a wheel I hope you try and practice throwing fast and post a video of it. Tim

  • My wheel is being delivered tomorrow night in time for xmas and hopefully I can get it in the vicinity of my web cam (also xmas gift) and give this a whirl!!! You are SO inspirational AND HELPFUL!!! Thanks!!!

  • mad world?

    good song choice

  • Beautiful....don't know how many times I have watched and been amazed now. :-)

I just thrown my first little bowl tonight and I'm so proud. :-) I've watched your videos and I think a kind of mentally got the idea - and now I'm trying to transfer it to my hands. :-) Greetings from Sweden

  • Thats really cool I just started throwing cups and bowls. By the way whats the name of the song?

  • Music Mad World-Michael Andrews and Gary Jules. Good luck when you start making stuff add some videos.

  • i love to throw pots and build stuff out of clay i have done it for 7 years

  • Your Clay Looks Very Forgiving You Are An Excellent Potter i am now an absolute beginer but im allright at the wheel

    very insporational cheers

  • Pure Inspiration!!! I have people on my job wanting to do pottery just from watching you do this!!! Sweet!!! ♥♥♥

  • Very impressive... It makes me want to throw real bad...

  • that was awesome.....

  • i love it!

  • Gosh! It normally takes me a couple of minutes just to centre! Perhaps I should hang-up my apron and make Greeting Cards instead!

    Thanks for this inspirational video.

  • whenever I throw on the hump, I have trouble getting the piece off the hump. You make it look easy. Any suggestions?

  • hold your hand under the piece at the point where you are cutting push the needle in on a tangent to the surface till you hhit the middle as you get near the middle squeeze with you left hand till the piece stop spinning and pops off.

  • I'm so happy! I threw 7 bowls today off the hump (well two humps) just like you did in this video. granted it took me about 45 minutes with more failed attempts than succesful and none are as good as yours, but im still happy!

  • That is goodto start to become quicker, I would do things in an order and not change that order. if you watch every bowl follows the same steps i make no attempt to save one if it looks or feels diffrent . I know that if it gets to the end iand i follow my steps it will be close

  • Very inspirational. Sorry, I know I am crowding your email with comments all in one day... oh well.

  • Not a problem its good to hear what people have to say about the videos.

  • What is this song? I love it. Great demonstration.

  • Music Mad World-Michael Andrews and Gary Jules

  • Badass

  • What's the difference between the "green" rib you use here and your "flexible metal rib of death"? and what's up with that!?!?

  • The flexible metal rib of death is like a springy knife. If you catch it in the clay and comes around can remove flesh. You do not use it in bowls because there isn,t mutch room to move, so I use a sherril rib. I don't use sherril ribs on the outside Of my work just inside.

  • Sounds Reasonable, Thanks !!!!

  • thats pretty cool

  • What percentage of s cracks do you get and what rib were you using if I may ask?

P.S. and did you pick the music before or after 'cause I have to say the match was rather perfect.

  • I pick the music after. When I take care of my bowls(drying trimming firing) at most 1 outta 25 have issues cracking, I have thrown for an empty bowls and they said they had some cracking problems trying to dry and trim the day they were thrown. Crack prevention happens in the opening when I push down with my thumb I hold my right hand at an angle and and push the clay kind of through a funnel shape, compressing the clay. the rib is a sherrill mud tool green.

  • Wonderful demo....thanks for sharing with us!

  • great music. . . geez lueez you make this look easy Thanks for the video!

  • Wow!
