I think this rarely version of recorder is something new classic. Breath sounds describe like Air, wind and cloud to me. I would like to hear more, if somebody could play easy or naturally. Thank you for sharing this video. I am hungry but I like music...
This is from the Eflat version of the magnificat. Bach later re-wrote it in D major replacing the recorders for flutes. There are slight differences between the versions. This version is rarely performed.
Funnily enough, this is the version I remember from my childhood...and ever since, I've always felt strange listening to versions where the ending of the melody is different ;)
@Rik77 But why are recorders being used if this is the D major version? and if it where the Eb version then surley the extra movements should be added. I hate it how ton Koopman seems to think he's above Bach's directions e.g. using a chorus, larger scale forces instead of Bach's 3,3,2,1,1 for strings and now using recorders? Rik77 please don't think I'm getting at you, youtube is just so great for venting anger!
@richie132 Hi Richie, I understand your annoyance. Personally I enjoy some flexibility with music performance. Afterall, a few hundred years have passed and performaing traditions are very different now. I personally don't necessarily just go for absolutely historically accurate performances, but rather good quality informed ones. I think this piece works very well with a few more added strings than Bach would have had but that's my personal taste.
@richie132 You're right there are some movements missing. Personally I prefer the D major version anyway, though I can tell you it is so much easier playing this movement on recorders! I miss the added texture from the flutes in the opening chorus. But being a flautist I'm biased of course! lol
I remember hearing this at 8... I knew then that, when it came to Bach, I would be in for a treat for the rest of my life.
