  • @alex3211com *males ;)

  • You missed an important point. Testosterone influences actions as much as society. Something that makes naturally have far more of. So you can't really argue that without the influences of preconceived differences between boys and girls the roles might be the same or reversed.

  • no i would say that my mind was conflicted because my brain was trying to decide between admiring your body or admiring your words. the classic battle to over come basic animal instincts. i am happy to say i over came my animal instincts. i had around 30 words before each bikini glance

  • "When you see a girl in a bikini, you don't expect her to be able to talk about subjects like existentialism or gender roles." – that is, in fact, exactly what I expect.

    I get disappointed a lot.

  • hey. just a quick sidenote. i would love to know what course you took in college that taught you about the oh so interesting topic of existentialism. i am very interested in the topic and topics like it.. would love to get a respond. please and thank you

  • lol your hottt

  • I LOVE the way you say "bikini."

  • fap

  • Marry me.

  • Comment removed

  • You don't know what you're talking about. Boys and girls are NOT the same until they hit puberty. You focused on only environmental factors and did not take into account evolutionary or biological differences between males and females.

  • By the way, an attractive person talking intelligently about culture and philosophy is SO HOT. I personally would love to see more videos about culture and philosophy (whether you wear swimwear or everyday clothes is your prerogative).

  • Thus, one can reasonably expect that someone walking around in a bikini knows nothing about existentialism. THE REAL PROBLEM: Some people think that inherent in femininity are stupidity and ignorance. These people think that having a pair of breasts and a vagina precludes intelligence. Sexists of this sort are nearly always ignorant of the relevant science, statistics, and history. Their opinion ought to be ignored.

  • Challenging societal biases is always a good thing. When most people do this they deny that there is any truth to the bias. On average, a person wearing a bikini on a beach has no clue about existentialism. It's not that people think women are stupid. Philosophically-minded people make up a very small percentage of the population. An even smaller percentage can talk about existentialism. An even smaller percentage walk around in bikinis.

  • Hi Emily. Love the vid, but I gotta tell you there's no reason people should expect a hot girl in a bikini can't discuss philosophy. When I go to Europe all kinds of women in bikinis discuss higher-order thinking. Maybe it's just an American thing?

  • @blacaria I agreww wholeheartedly!

  • PLEASE do more of these.

  • Is that a Doctor Who poster?

  • Also, I'm gonna call you in the morning because I need to talk to you about gender roles and things. Yup.

  • "Sorry...action figures?" I laughed out loud. Honey, I play with DOLLS. I am not ashamed.

  • Mfw you put the shirt on, "Nooooooooooooooooo"

  • Is a guy in swim trunks perceived as being the sort to talk about existentialism?

I don't think this is mostly about gender roles. As Samuel Clemens once said, clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society. And they rarely opine on existentialism. (Though Nietzsche is typically the favorite philosopher of bros, right?)

  • @LKBM the point here is not that she is a girl in a bikini that so she should not be able to talk about issues such as existentialism. More so when you see a girl in a bikini you automatically think "hot" "shallow" a whole myriad of things. That is 100% gender roles. The preconceived idea that because she is female, and because she is in a bathing suit she shouldn't be able to touch on such topics. Im running out of characters. (though yes, i would call nietzsche a bro.. amongst other things)

  • @Sophiaxxdarling If we think the same about a guy in swimming trunks, then how is it gender roles?

  • @Sophiaxxdarling To clarify, I'm not saying there's 0% gender role influence here, but that to claim 100% ignores other factors. All you did was reiterate the initial argument, rather than address the issue I raised with it. We perceive someone in swimwear as not wearing their philosopher hat, regardless of gender. You've assigned that 0% relevance, putting 100% on the gender component without defending the claim from the counterpoint.

You replied to my argument without addressing my argument.

  • One of the successes of feminism was the integration of easy braininess (once a male preserve, strange to think) into a gender role that was largely limited to sexualized display. The expectation isn't that a girl in a bikini isn't capable of critical thinking, it's that she probably won't engage others in critical debate or expound on lofty subjects -while- appealing to a sexual response. It's a mixed message, like Hamlet done as cabaret. Not to say people don't love novelty, though.

  • I wear dresses because I dont like wearing pants. I can care less if I look pretty or not..I like the breeze :p

  • YOU ARE EPIC HAHAHAH NUFF SAID

  • I've watched both this and the original video multiple times, and I still have absolutely no idea what existentialism is.

  • you remind me of selena gomez, you look just like her. ugh you're so pretty.

  • This girl is awesome!

  • I really enjoyed this video but I have one thing to say:

    FRANZ KAFKA!

Have you read any of his work? I've read both The Trial and The Castle and love them! They are tough going at times, particularly The Castle, but worth it. The theatre adaptation of The Trial by Berkoff is also awesome!

  • I think there seems to be "to many issues" for one person to really give a shit about. Someone who thinks like this and has to split it up and pick points at society should really find something else to do.

But on a serious note. I take your views in the video but i find it hard how most people don't really care, there are to many sheeps in the world. Do people really think like this

PS. Be different and go join the army, its a "manly thing to do" :D

  • 1. I love your hair like that.

    2. Very well done. LIKE! :D

  • it looks like you dont have any panties on.......sweat!

  • Just because a girl is in a bikini doesn't mean she isn't intelligent. Not everybody thinks that girls in bikinis are dumb. Just cause u are wearing a bikini doesn't make me think you're dumb. Put some clothes on...haha

  • I turned off the video at 2:08

  • Great topic good points just slightly worried abt the psycho's + pedo's that see it. My rant is not directed at you but follows the same lines. I hate the way girls (especially) R depicted by novelists (esp. teenage writers) Girls are either idiots with no Independence or common sense- Girls, if you see a scary guy with a 'dark' past as an excuse for actions/behavior- RUN THE HELL AWAY. They follow the characteristics of 'nice girls' (as in The Nice Girl Syndrome-book) and guys seem to be

  • Interesting topis, interesting points. I adire your courage in ignoring all the pedo's and pycho's who will probably see this. Not a criticism, I actually admire it, but please be careful. Well, that said I really agree with you. My personal bugbear is against all the characters in novels, and how they're depicted. Girls? See a scary person, who has a 'dark' look/past- RUN THE HELL AWAY. I'd say change my reading selection but it's really in a lot of books. My rant at novelists. Where did indep

  • what if what I truly enjoy is seeing girls in bikinis?

  • You got a very pretty belly.

  • I liked it.

  • nice bikini

  • i went on a summer camp musical theatre thingy (ymt summer skills 2010) and we did a WHOLE PLAY ON THIS

omg im such a neek :(

  • Great points. The only think I don't like is the generalization of people and their "views" on gender roles. On the contrary, and woman I see fit to look at in a bikini, had better be able to talk about substantial topics or else, what am I wasting my time talking/watching her for? This isn't Jersey Shore. And I haven't turned on MTV since the last music video played. (Actually, since the 90s) Instead, point out the flawed logic in our media and the lambs, not our people. Just my two cents.

  • I'd like to hear about other sex gender stuff, I don't mind ten minute videos. I'd like to understand better and you're pretty keen at explaining! =) Also, Learn to liberate yourself would make a great tshirt.

  • Much of this stuff seems obvious to me, do many people have problems with gender roles and conformity?

If, as a male, I feel that I want to do something that is considered as a female activity (e.g. Getting pregnant and giving birth) I wont let society determine whether or not I should do so.

I shouldn't be kept from being happy just because people are stupid.

  • Can I just tell you that you truly inspire me. I will be making a video response in the near future.

  • You would be so much more liberated if you put on a purple shirt with a W instead of a blue one with Cal on it.

  • I watched a documentary called "Mis(s)representation" today. It discussed how the media creates these images of what girls are supposed to be like and it had some really interesting/horryfying points and facts about women in for example politics and newscasts. I don't know. I just thought it was a really interesting film and I just found a lot of connections with it, from watching your video (which was really good by the way).

  • @KristinDotCom Such programs often make very interesting points, but while doing this as a project at school I came to the conclusion that although what the media is doing is in some respects wrong, ultimately it's a free press and freedom of speech. But thanks for the recommendation, I thought I might just add to the discussion :)

  • do you watch community ? you look and sound scarily like the blonde girl with the ridiculous name

  • All I heard was learn to liberate yourself. Was she talking before then?

  • I know who I am. It has NOTHING to do with my sex, eccept for the way I think about my brother.

    He's a figurative asshole.

  • I'm really impressed by what you have to say, your an inspiration to this generation

  • as a straight female, i think you are hot

also. when i was in 8th grade i played football with a cast on my foot for PE. definitely not what a girl would normally have done

  • @kristinaalannah Or, at least, your actions didn't match up with our society's perception of what is a normal course of action for someone of your gender.

  • I must say that the bikini was distracting (I say that as a compliment to you and with disdain for myself) but I listened to you voice with the window minimized and I loved your words! You're the best Emily, kudos.

  • You are without a doubt one of the most well-spoken people I subscribe to on YouTube.

  • i love how you're little talk about gender roles touches upon how society plays it's own role in generating this notion of a proper male and female, but i think its also important to look at the outlets they should look for when people choose to break free, opportunities may not be so apparent for some.

and you consistently redefine the word beauty, by the way.

  • Cal pride! =D

  • I should go to class wearing a speedo and talk about convergence in improper integrals or zwitterions that exist because of electron-pushing...

  • oh I thought you mean you going to the beach :P

  • Bravee liberation front :D I love seeing your videos because you always bring up really good points! Everything seems to have a label and I find that frustrating because I just want to be what I want to be without being judged. Although... I tend to do it anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter :D

  • subscribed - not because of the bikini, but because of the Dr. Who poster in the background and your smart smart ways.

  • What about intersex people? And genderqueer people?

  • @alexQuantizes Read the description pleeeeease.

  • @emilythebravee - Very sorry. My mistake.

  • I really want to make a video about feminism, because I just saw this documentary called "Miss Representation" and it really opened my eyes about gender roles and other perceptions we have from the media. And everyone is engrained in our society to have conflicting ideas about what we should be. Skinny, but curvy. Bobbleheads or smart. Do above and beyond or nothing at all. It's so conflicting that it's become dangerous. I cannot think of a single person without some insecurity, it's alarming.

  • PREACH.

  • you remind me of melody, ariel's daughter

  • @elibellcrazy This is literally the best thing anyone has ever told me.

  • @emilythebravee You totally rock, by clearly demonstrating that a woman can be intelligent and impressive even though she is beautiful, sexy, and willing to demonstrate that. You are both gorgeous AND philosophically appealing.

  • Ahh the ending was brilliant. :)

  • damn, now I have to look for the marcosaynomore coment

  • @sbmg09 he told me to take my top off. there: mystery solved.

  • Incidentally, my favorite heroine from the Tales game series is a farm girl capable of hand to hand beatdowns and quick healing, who really wants to help this girl and save the world, making the hero look lazy and undetermined in comparison.

On a more directly related note, I've always considered my gender identity to be androgynous myself. It's often easier for me to relate to females even.

(The bikini mostly makes me think we should all go swimming.)

  • This was brilliant and well done. I applaud you.

  • Woh, your video totally explains why I have long blonde hair, shave parts of my body, am a guy and straight. Thanks Alex Day twitter for posting, sort of, about this.

  • you sir, are a genius (see what I did there?)

  • Comment removed

  • how tall are you?

  • 2:11 the saddest moment of my life.

  • I'm concerned that society assumes gender identity and clothing at all reflect intelligence.

  • This video, like all of yours I can recall, is fantastic! :D

Really though I feel like you skipped the existential point, the way we (each separately or as a community) define identity.

The most basic and common way is the 'yes-no' 'us-them' which I would say is probably the worst way possible..."I am like him/her in 'that', but not in 'that' ".

  • @eladps But a more constructive way is by goal, by ideal (not a blind one, a real earnest one) like Nerdfighteria 'doing awesome things with awesome people' when it could just as well be 'we are like tv or blogs, but different'

I think that's something to keep in mind, always.

    kbye :D

  • @eladps I forgot my point! ><

Think! it's that a lot of the problems caused by society's view of gender roles (or anything) could be countered (in a specific person) by just thinking about it, really thinking...for example I'm a heterosexual male, and I've never seen myself as similar or contrast to the macho role I was supposed to inherent with my Y chromosome...I think that if people think critically, like you seem to do, problems like this wouldn't be so prominent

    kbye :D

  • Oh Emily, you're just too cool :D

  • You're quickly becoming one of my favourite youtubers. Not only are you brave enough to film yourself in a bikini, you do it while tackling topics that most people don't consider, and you make me want to get involved in this community, rather than just watching passively.

  • @fletcherxox Then do it!

    I'd watch :)

  • Gender roles are part of the reason why I quit playing pokemon when I became 13. It wasn't "cool" for boys to be playing a game that revolved around catching "cute, cuddly" creatures. I got caught up in that and stopped playing pokemon. I shouldn't have ):

  • @Voldey Justin. That is the saddest thing I've ever heard.

  • Not sure if this comment was made on your other video (probably was), but you're really brave (ha) for wearing the bikini in the first place. I'm not sure many girls would be able to say they're comfortable enough in their own skin to film themselves in something that exposing, even if for artistic reasons.

    Props for braveness!

  • We do a lot on gender roles in my literature class, tying into the whole "nature vs. nurture" debate. I find it all really interesting. Great video!

  • hmmm....the things i truly enjoy...

(im really glad you made this video, i keep saying that every time you make a video, but it's true!)

  • Another amazing video, emily. Really. Wow.

  • lawl i c flesh

  • This was a great video. I'm very much in the foreground of objectifying women, however being challenged in this video was very refreshing. I managed it from 15 seconds, for about a minute and a half, but it was tough.

Strangely enough, the novel/book/story thing I'm writing is about female heroism with gender neutral male side-kicks :/

  • My perception of gender roles has been turned ass over teacup here in Korea. I am planning on making a video about it.

  • @fizzylimon Please do! I'm really interested to hear what you have to say

  • @fizzylimon yes please! :)

  • you should do more videos like this

  • Interesting, very interesting, thanks!

Question: Ever read "The Blank Slate" by Steven Pinker? Thoughts?

    Have a great week! :-)

  • @KennyWrites I haven't, but I have heard of it!

  • @emilythebravee You might enjoy it! Mister Pinker is a renowned Harvard Psychologist who writes about Human Nature, Philosophy and Language. His books are thought provoking. I am reading "The Better Angels of Our Nature" which just came out last week. It's about how violence has declined over the centuries and why that occurred. Also excellent is "How the Mind Works" by Pinker. It's the owner's manual for the brain that didn't come in the box. :-) Again, thanks for the interesting video!

  • I find a funny point about my defying gender roles. I spent my afternoon today building a Transformer made out of Lego. And then I played some video games. Completely besides the point, but of well. This was a very thoughtful, and more understandable part two to the other video.

  • I don’t agree with the statement “... you don’t expect a girl in a bikini to be able to talk about existentialism or gender roles.” For me it is more along the lines of “... you don’t expect a girl wearing a bikini in a video on the internet to be discussing existentialism and gender roles.”

  • Excellent as per usual

  • im taking a human sexuality class and we talked about this and gender neutrality. just sayin i respect yo brain... and yo body lol no thats a really great wat to get a point across

  • This is what I study at uni! Gender, like most things in our society are socially constructed, there are also things called gender norms which are societal trends which dictate right or wrong action/behaviour. Norms in general are usually mostly hidden in day to day life, only when challanged these norms become explicit. :)

You video was really great at covering the basics! I hope people delve into this more deeply, theres quite a lot to learn about the topic.

  • Major topics in bikinis should become a series. You always bring such intelligence to everything Emily. Love it.

  • I don't know, I have no problem enjoying the bikini and still recognizing what you say as intelligent and reasonable. Not every one thinks that way but I choose to believe that we're making progress overall.

  • O crap big thoughts again. :)

  • Gender roles are for noobs. Be who you want/are, I say.

  • This is off-topic, but that is a really cute bikini!

And this is a really interesting topic. People think that gender roles and stereotypes are old and not worth talking about, but I would disagree. I think that it's becoming more interesting, in a way, because gender roles and assumptions made from them are really changing.

  • This was really well done!!!! And you are one hot intellegant girl. :) I love the contrast you did with this. :) Great!

  • I can say that i never had a role to follow or tried to model a type of person. My big thing is, being entirely original. If its been done, its not me. Independent thinking is long lost in america. Not entirely gone, but i swear most of the people here are cloned by our idols and education. Be new. Be original. Be u.

  • You may want to read the psychological study by Margret Mead in 1935, it's published in her book Sex and Temperament. You may find it really interesting :)

  • Where'd you get that bathing suit? I want one!

  • YES. though same goes for boys in speedos. expression of sexuality is seen as incompatible with cognitive/analytical prowess. this is wierd and false, both sexuality and rational though are key features of humanity, not mutually exclusive traits.

  • Isn't existentialism about taking responsibility for oneself... if you would have taken a poo before you recorded this, your stomach would have looked a lot flatter! Just saying!

  • oh man. you are so cool. I would do this, except my grandparents watch my videos. And I just ate a lot of pasta.

  • I know you might not know me and all but i recently made a tumblr and it would be a honor to have the emilythebravee as one of my followers :)

  • The super-awkward moment when you have to explain to your mum why your philosophy homework involves watching a bikini-clad youtuber.

Regardless of how awkward that was, I really enjoy the videos you do where you address things that are so relevant and impacting on our (mainly teenagers who watch your videos) lives. Gender roles, Skype relationships and Existentialism (hey, I'm a Philosophy and English undergraduate, existentialism matters) are topics that should be addressed more! Thank you!

  • its that its not the "norm" so yes when i saw u in a bikini- the topic of existentialism did not cross my mind however i didnt think you were not capable of talking about it!

  • its not that i dot expect you to "be able" to talk about existentialism, 1:55, its that i dont expect her TO talk about existentialism while wearing one, it promotes one to believe you will be talking about the beach, swimming, summer. This is because a "bikini" is not a "day-to-day" outfit, u wear it to swim and tan-not make a vlog on youtube- this is not to say u cant or should not be allowed to (although that brings up how women are depicted sexually but thats another story) *see post above*

  • I noticed whilst you were talking about boy/girl stereotypes in stories...that I could totally see you as a badass action heroine in a movie. :)

  • I totally love your bikini!

  • Comment removed

  • Fantastic. Back to your best! :-)

    Ciao, Lisian x

PS. Jealous of that tummy. It would look great with a navel ring. Now a video on bodyart from you would be cool :-)

  • TOMS are really kool shoes when I first saw them I read what they're about(Donating new shoes) an instantly bought a pair and haven't stopped buying them since  Yu are really cute btw, I live here in the California bay area too maybe yu could tutor me ms.smarty  I like to learn 

  • my favorite topic! gender!

  • Neither gender nor sex are binary. Gender especially is often considered a spectrum (usually with cis at one end, queer at the other and everything else in between), but really that's a fairly significant over-simplification... beyond the scope of 500 characters to go into properly, however. As for sex, well, it's estimated between 1 in every 500 to 1000 babies are born intersex. Interestingly, until the mid 1900s, pink was considered masculine, blue feminine. Shows how perceptions shift.

  • I like your way of thinking :)

  • so distracted.

  • It's interesting to note that as men and women age, they become more androgynous. I think it comes with maturity that we realize gender isn't so binding. Great video!

  • Sex is between your legs (though not binary) and gender is between your ears.

    Technically males can wear bikinis.

It has always fascinated me that the term 'bikini' became popular because of a nuclear detonation. That says *something* though I'm not sure what.

  • @marcosaynomore Nope.

  • @emilythebravee lol, bad joke, dont hate me :(

  • love the emphasis on the word "SEX" :L lol great video emily :)

  • sorry, was you talking?:/

  • It's funny because girls always say that we can't multitask and I've gotta say it's kinda true :) I did listen to you talk about gender roles and existentialism and how puberty makes us all either conform to society or rebel but in the back of my mind it was hard to focus on your face :D

  • I love when youtube coincides with my uni classes. I'm actually learning while procrastinating.

    P.s. good job!

  • Perfect video. You're so right.

  • Can this be a series forever. It combines my favorite things.

  • Finally, a girl in a bikini that doesn't make want to blend my face.

  • Balls.... Wait!

  • Also sex is not a binary. I'll put my old video on the subject as a response and if you want you can see my whole gender studies playlist.

  • @TheMinuteVlog I think you mean gender is not binary

  • @TSFMaster Neither is. About 1/1000 of babies are born intersex. It can be hermaphroditism, hormone imbalances, etc. Also saying sex is divided between boys and girls is cis-sexist and erases trans* people from the equation.

  • @TheMinuteVlog But the in the vast majority of intersex cases, the anomaly is corrected. Physically. And cis-sexism is a gender term. But I see your point. I still think that sort of thing is more of a gender issue though.

  • I find when a girl talks about intelligent subjects i am more attracted to them. It makes me want to indulge into the conversation rather than talk to them just for their appearance. Although, the added looks are always nice ;).

  • was the message from emilythebravee to herself, that's not existentialism, that's feminism!

  • Emily the Bravee in a bikini talking about gender studies? Oh Lord, take me now. I've seen everything I ever wanted.

  • I was listening to this while doing some work and only at the end when I got to get a drink did I realise you wee in a bikini, I was completely lost in the words you were saying, albiet I did go back just make sure I wasn't halucinating.

(btw, away form the actual words, the hottest part was when you pulled your hair out and flicked it when putting the shirt on.. just saying)

  • :) I really like these videos. You're very articulate.

However, it's probably a bit broad to consider all girls in bikinis vapid idiots. But I realise you're only generalising to make a point.

  • I don't think I paid attention to the bikini and how it was related to the first video. Honestly, I don't remember since it's been a while.

But I really like the design of this bikini. Hahahaaa

Oh, and I like videos about such things.

  • Unless Mike beat me too it: Bewbs.

  • @JessopBlues You beat him. Congratulations.

  • i dont know what you talking about but damn you are sexy in that bikini

  • 2:05

    errmm,sorry..

are you saying that most viewers are not broadminded enough to consider that a girl in a bikini can articulate and b concerned wih important issues? how do you know for sure ? maket research ? or just an assumption ? bcos then that would make what you guilty of the same thing that you are accusing us of. would'nt it ?

    - i could b wrong though..peace

  • I love your thought provoking videos. :)

  • 1:45

its not passed down totally. although you're right most of it is.

most of it is instinctive but civilisation has perverted it in order to suit its agendas.

    i could b wrong, but...

ps, if u were a fat girl would u b in a bikini for this video expressing your point ?

    :)

best wishes - keep up the great vidz :)

  • I tried to not think about the girl in the bikini from the beginning, even before i realised that was the point, however thats a habit i was raised on (to respect women) albeit it is thought-distracting to an extent. I think no matter what I try to think in the back of my mind there's that voice roughly 10% of me saying "yes but thats a hot girl in a bikini" I do wonder if girls are just as distracted when being talked to by topless guys.

  • @megasin1 The answer is yes. Especially if they're Zac Efron.

  • @emilythebravee time for me to conform up to mr efron from now on. And I was so close to getting the point of this vlog too
