You know. I feel exactly the same way. I watched them in my dorm room's lounge on BET. They were a bulwark on BET back then with the Alexander and Cherelle videos. I wonder if when they moved to L.A. in the late eighties/nineties if the industry there gave them the love and technical artistry/wizardry to help them along? Or whether there was some cultural jingoism - american inspired - going on that didn't allow for the best talents to have met up because I'm really liking them now +25 later.
@2008topshelf Ok, please forgive me, but I'm an American so what does "bulwark" mean? From what I understand, the Americam music industry didn't quite know how to market them. Which to me is very odd, because when they were all in their twenties they were trying to break in the R & B genre of music, which would've been easy for them at the time because the U.S. had several groups they were marketing. They just didn't take the time to help them find the right songwriters/arrangers/producers.
@Calvin375 just saying they were at the forefront of BET's programming gluing impressionable teens and students to their tubes back in the day. Every other video was Alexander and Cherelle's "Innocent" video, Five Star and sampling from Solar Records artists of the time. But Five Star held it down visually. I still think though - to you point about songwriters etc. - that there was a conspiracy to isolate a lot of talent back then that had potential to take shine away from the Jackson family
@2008topshelf Sharice ("When you Smile") was a Janet Jackson show stopper and the industry didn't give her much talent to work with so she didn't glow with the mega wattage she could have. While Five Star were no Jackson's musical proxy - Michael being a musical X factor that had/has no pop equal - I'd bet the sycophants of the Jacksons - they being anyone who wanted anything to do with the Jacksons - would steer clear of Five Star lest risk any opportunity to cozy up to the Jacksons themselves
@Picture111 Thanks for the clarification and you're right,... that was a highly energized dance! I guess that's how they kept their figures for so long. Anyone would be knackered after that workout!!! (LOL)!!!
I liked this group when I first saw them on an MTV video, but youtube has made me love them. Denise just got better as her career went on. Her vocals even trancsended. She's a true artist. As for the janet comparisons I did see it in the early stages of the groups career, but I thought Janet copied them. So i not sure. But either way as an artist myself, we all draw inspiration from somthing else. Micael jackson was inspired by James Brown, Fred Astaire and 80s hip hop dancers. Is that stealing
why are you name calling its not that serious... you don't have to be so childish. People are going to think what they want... get used to it and stop throwing insults because It makes you look indecent
I agree with you Motownbaby with the "no push in America" because I adore 5 Star and I still Listen to all of the songs to this day, and every time I listnen to songs like "With Every Heartbeat", and "Shine" I always say to myself " I can't believe these weren't huge on the charts." "The Writing's on the Wall" should've been released as a single in the States also, (from the "Heart and Soul" album.)
god five star are brilliant they still all look very sexy still on this video. love this song but think the new jack mix thats on the single is much better .i bet if they had of release that mix it would of been a big hit.
im sorry but Deniece looks like she is copying mariah carey style.... and it looks like she has lost a lot of weight... that is the skinniest i have seen Deniece
Mariah Carey was on her 3rd Cd in '92...but that doesn't matter, becuz i was a big fan of 5-Star, 5 years before I ever heard of Mariah. Also, Mariah doesn't dance! I love 5-Star...but with almost no push in America, I was losing interest in them by the late 80's!!! Too bad Youtube wasn't around then!
doesn't everyone copy someone... whats wrong with them copying.... You guys make it seems like its something wrong... everyone is guilty... i just happened to noticed it was mariah's brown curly hair
WHATEVER.... everyone copies everyone.... FIVE star is not immune from that.... unless you are sted, doris, lorriane, deniece,or del.. then you shouldn't be acting ask if i am talking to you or about you...
