I can see that. As a halfway point, it would eb kind of useful if something went sour on a future moon base. Also, it'd be more of a Zero G location than low orbit. The only problem would be the need to reinforce the structure for travel. Rocket thrust could cause damage to it. ION engines probably wouldn't provide enough thrust to break orbit but, could be used it we were to ever want to sent it farther out like to the Ort cloud or something.

Any thrust can break orbit if it runs long enough. That's the nature of orbit. You just add velocity and your orbit circle will get bigger until you reach the escape area.

actually, i call myself a realist... able to see that the glass is both half empty and half full at the same time. the human instinct for survival will enable a few people to survive a nuclear proliferation, but they won't be on mars, and afterward they'll have an even tougher time getting there. i really don't see any battlestar galactica type shit in our future.

If NASA keep up this slow progress, when they finaly arrive back to moon, they can fill their fuletanks from russian fuel stations, can eat at a chines restaurant, and can stay in a european hotel for the night at the moon :D

To be able to keep exploring space, a country needs extra cash. Not just any extra cash, but excessive cash. The way China is catching up with America, it's worth to note! This's century (Yr2000 to Yr2100)is China's Century, for it will be the next SuperPower. It will have a lot of those excessive cash to do exploring space. We will see. (A keen Space-Watcher)
