  • Great Cover, That Song was yust made for the Beasts!!!!!

  • This song is from The Axeman's Jazz 1984 not 1988, maybe the video is from 1988. The Axeman's Jazz is a masterpiece, anyone who has not heard it is missing out. TEN WHEELS FOR JESUS

  • Seriously messed up song...but so inviting somehow...loved it...ALIASX

  • Christ I saw this on Rage back in 1990 and until today I never knew who sang it or what the song was, only remembered the guitarist moving across while the guy was singing 'psycho mama'. Thanks for letting me die a happy man finally having this mystery unraveled!

  • Of the 10 versions I have heard so far, this is without doubt the best one!

  • Eddie Noack's version is the best in my opinion and utterly surreal given the fact that he recorded it in the 50's.

  • @enjoythewildUSA Actually he recorded it in 68, thought he retains his Bob Willis honky-tonk sensibility and it seems a 50's song. My favorite version is the Jack Kittle version recorded only five years later in 73. It was his version which popularized the song for future generations to re-popularize (like Jones, Costello, Bourbon, etc) and had Kittle's version (seriously haunting) not been done most of us might not know this song or the huge contribution Noack gave to music. Cheers!

  • One of my favourites <3

  • Gotta love Tex!

  • I 'm so in love with this song, I just listened to it ten times and downloaded it.

It's creepy without being loud and obnoxious!

  • the joker much?

  • Face at 3:01 occupies my worst nightmares. What a scary scary man.

  • This is an awesome song. Went to see Tex Perkins last night, playing all johnny cash songs, was awesome :D

  • 2:19 and 2:49 are incredible. Best version of this song I've ever heard/seen. An instant all-time fave. This is real country.

  • This is the best musicvideo I've ever seen! Not to mention one of the best versions of this song!

  • i just came in my pants

  • I've looked for it but it's extremely rare.

  • Thanks nzoz1988 this made my whole week. All the versions are great including Eddie Noack .

Never heard the George Jones version though.

  • I'd love to hear George Jones' version. What a treat that would be!

  • @sharkattacksteve the only version to listen to is Eddie Noack-the original!!

  • @Rockunstank

Yes of course it's the best version followed by BoB. I want it played at my wake fer sure.

  • OMG! This is great! What a cast in the video!!!

  • Love this vid. Tex does a great scary face , esp. when he breaks into that charming lop-sided smile . Love the droll delivery , wailing guitar, throbbing bass line & laid-back percussion....the story with ma & pa played out in the background is done so well.

  • this is the shit brings back fine memorys

    thx TeX

  • tex is a fucking god and omg he can retain his looks very well

  • Kid Congo and Kim Salmon are more talented than Greg Perkins, my opinion counts.

  • "Momma !

Momma, why don't you get up ? "

    A great track.

Many thanks to Elvis Costello too.

Thanks for the chance to see this classic song.

  • On the contrary, this video is by far a masterful version of a great song. These guys know how to bring a creepy song to life. My best friend from Minneapolis (BP) turned me on to this version back in the 80's.

  • I dunno Tex you seem ok to me. Maybe just a phase you are going through

  • Jack Kittel's version will always be the best version. He is the one who made it famous!!!

  • the jack kittle version is my favorite version, but that might just be cuz my fathers playing drums on it. ahhh...actually it's the creepiest version... played on dr. demento once upon a time...

  • Who is your father?

  • this is from the very brilliant album "the axeman´s jazz" its and australian classic.

  • This is one fucking amazing song, video as well.

All thumbs up for these folks.

  • Sorry ....wer ist der Sänger???????

  • Tex Perkins

  • this is the best version by far...college radio cow punk classic...the guitar is twisted and the vocal is primo!!!

  • I loveth this song.

  • Exactly the kind of song that could be played by a jukebox a lonely evening in a small and sinister town.

  • I agree totally. I also like this version far better than Elvis Costello's rendition. Not for any reason other than personal taste, I suppose. But THIS is a dark corner warm whiskey sipping song playing in a old rickety bar on a broken down jukebox in the middle of the desert somewhere far far away. LOVE it.

  • @Roadsterbaby My Kind of Town!!!

  • @Roadsterbaby you're fuckiin dreamin sweetheart it aint the movies fuck get agrip .... from he girl in the outback /bush !!

  • elvis costello's version is better, sorry

  • Your gotta be kidding!

  • i think some people do have a very biased and narrow view point when it comes to versions. No matter who did this, I think our friend Barry would still praise Costello's version. It's the same with Happy Mondays fans who knock anybody else who does a version of 'He's Gonna Step On You Again' or the Iron Maiden fans who refuse to see just how much more innovative and creative Skyhooks' original version of 'Women In Uniform' is, next to the bland cock-rock version done by Iron Maiden.

  • I agree.

  • is not.

  • I have searched every corner of the world for this cover. Heard it on a Woven Hand bootleg as intro.

  • then my mind just walked away..

worryingly enough, Ive amused my mind often with that thought over the years Well put Tex

  • elvis costello's version is a superior being.if anyone could down load, or upload what everthe fuck it is, that would be super darling...

  • I also miss more versions of it on youtube... Can only find four and I know it's a lot more recorded. In my opinion this version "is a superior being".

  • Only four? There is at least ten versions on youtube! But you will never find a better version than this anyway!

  • This is great. I always loved the Elvis Costello version since I got the single 'Sweet Dreams' in 1981. I hadn't heard this version before, it's really cool. Have a look at my versions of the Everly Brothers' 'Down in the Willow Garden' & 'Take a Message to Mary' they're in the same vein as this.

  • 20 years ago. man. love it. tex 'n the boys. amen.

  • Wow. I've loved the song for years and never even realized there was a video for it. Thanks!

  • I don't know if it's the engineering or the sound-transfer, but it sounds a bit tinny and I didn't get the full impact that I can usually feel from the song.

  • It's from an old VHS tape. Best I have to offer as far as this song goes.

  • That explains it. Thanks, and sorry if I offended you.

  • No offense taken... :-)

  • So glad to see this back! The Beasts at their finest.

  • Dark.

  • Awesome stuff, but what else would you expect from Tex. ROCK ON.
