One of the things I have always thought interesting about this movie is the critique it presents of society at large. Yes D-Fens reacts extremely, but it seems legitimate to achieve any respect or any dignity in the situations he finds himself in. Events seem to conspire to push him over the edge as he tries to combat the selfishness and agressive egocentric values of the society around him. He is a man pushed over by events, not by himself. Therefore deserving of some sympathy.
