Yes. I believe that he is. There are many factors that come into play.
The word "Atheist" only came on the mainstream only recently. During that time period where he claims to have been an "Atheist", the cold war was still in effect and therefore Atheism was generally associated with communist Russia.
So I doubt before his conversion he claimed to be an Atheist, since it was part of the popular culture that "Atheist = commie pinko". You should consider his claims more carefully.

I rely on historical accounts of how Atheism was portrayed in the late 80's. That's my source. At this time period, we were seen as the "enemy" and it was relatively easy by the mainstream to portray us as the evil boogeymen that evangelicals love to make us out to be.
Of course now, with the coming of the net and youtube, this is difficult. We have our voice and you cannot pull the same con-artistry as you once did.

Most of my students have know quite a bit by this age. Some are learning how to trick from their mothers, sell drugs, have killed, been raped/molested, take care of their younger siblings while their pothead or crackhead parents get high, etc.
I work with inner city at risk youth. And I say this from personal experience and the experiences of my kids I counsel.

Why do you feel that just because atheists don't believe in an after life that life is meaningless. I just ate an Ice Cream Cone last night. Was it not as enjoyable just because it is now gone? Enjoy life while you have it, and whatever happens after death will remain unknown until you die.
And I would think that if there is a God he would judge people based on how they treat others, rather then send them to hell based on their belief in him without credible evidence.

Alot of people think the same way you do, I am not going to judge you since I cannot anyway. But I will say that unless you are 100% sure of what the future holds for you? You should maybe do a little checking. Not only with what you can see and feel but what you cannot see or feel. Some things in life are just a memory, but others will stay with you and make your life that much better. Faith is not to hold you back but to make your life richer. It will stay with you forever and then some.

Actually we are important in the spectrum of the universe. Think of everything in existence as pieces of a puzzle. One piece alone is pretty useless, but get them all together and you got yourself an image.
Also real success is a baseless statement since success is self defined. I personally see anyone that is a good doctor, teacher, nurse, scientist, writer, firefighter, or whatever the job may be as successful. Plenty of atheists are successful human beings and you're just a bigot.
