Everyone claims it was three parallel stories, it was just one story - The story of the doctor learning about death from his wife all the way up to his death.
i swear some people are so ignorant i think that most people who didn't like this movie thought it was going to be one story spanning across time but ti's not it's 3 maybe 2 depending on how you look at it and honestly when u realize that it's awsome. and the people who did get it and didn't like must hate romance movies in general because 2001 a space odyssey does the same shit and people love
An incredible movie. Just watched it past week. It's so overwhelming that I will have to watch it a couple of more times to totally digest it. Hugh did a great job. He should quit making Wolverine movies before he looks like Schwarzenegger/The Terminator. (just my opinion)
The fountain is so complex as well as emotionally and physically demanding. I forgot how many times i've cried, the love of Tommy for izzi was just... so deep.
the first time i watched this movie i didn't get all of it but still liked it because of the visual effestc and just the way it was made. than the second time i started to understand but i think there are still some parts i don't understand bu that's ok cause it's greatto see a movie in different ways everytime i see it! lov it!
I saw an interview with Hugh and he said the tree he is traveling with is the tree of life but mankind has used it up like everything else we use up on earth and he is going to xlibalba to try to save it.
This movie...I have watched it about 10 times. It's so full...this is something every person must face at several points in our lives. When it happens to the people we love and when it's our turn. The older we get the more we begin to realize it's inevitability. It's a wonderful movie. I appreciate it.
I just bought this DVD because I'm a Hugh fan but I'm a bit confused. So is Hugh ONE character that travels through time? Like he drank the sap when he was a conquis. so he lived forever? Or, was he just reborn again? Or is it just 3 completely different people? How are the three stories intertwined? thanks!
Hugh's character Tommy is one person. The storyline in Spain is Izzi's way of dealing with her death. She writes a story about a conquistador "Tomas" who is the symbol of her conquering husband, hellbent on curing cancer before she dies. Izzi leaves the end unwritten as a way of telling Tommy that he needs to write the end for himself. That he needs to continue his life, even after she passes. The storyline in Space is how he comes to terms with her death. How he struggles and then accepts it.
The storyline through Space is a continuation of the present timeline, although it is very very subtly hinted at in the film. He has extended his own life for a long time, and the tree he is flying with is the one he planted over Izzi's grave. He finally finishes the book (in his head) as he is finally about to die in Xibalba. Some scenes in the space part are imaginary, such as him putting on the ring or seeing Izzi, but it is supposed to be him in the future. It's hard to explain in 500 chars.

The way you interpret the story is completely up to you.
I mean personally, i see the story set in the past as the story. The present is what is actually happening. And the future is what is going through his mind.
Oh my bloody bleeping GOD! I LOVE THIS! xD Aiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!! Okay, I'm definetely gonna go see it again, lol! Thanks for posting this, I LOVE YOU!!! *hugs*

6:47 - who else hates this hour? Three days from now I will have to be up at that time again to go to school. Ugh...
Anyway, I want to see "The Fountain" again so hard. I've got my DVD today and consider whether to watch it or not.

So their are two trees. The tree of life and the tree of knowledge. Do they physically exist today?

There's one in Bahrain. The tree of life, that is.

don't know, God placed two cherubim in Eden to guard the trees, so that no human will ever see them again, so the story goes.
