  • I heard this song on the radio today, Haven't heard it in forever. You did and excellent job on it!!

  • 20 people are just ROCKS....

  • He mentions Alan Freed, but no mention of Wolfman Jack. Anway, I've always loved this song and you did a great job with the visuals!

  • marnielynn2001 you must have way too much free time on your hands. all kidding aside, your interpretation of Life Is A Rock is amusing, highly entertaning & just an all round fun slide show to view. great job.

  • Dude, by the end, the backing vocals sing (Rumba) instead of (Remember), as you quoted. It's a citation to Doctor Buzzard's song Cherchez La Femme (C'est si Bon).

  • Genius! Thanks so much, it was excellent.

  • I Googled the lyrics but Youboob won't let me post a URL.

  • Great Para Work! The rainbow is just right , you will see.

As we reach the end of this music age, a musician of the line of David will be found walking in music, against a template in music, formed against him.

He will be seen at the end of that rainbow you mentioned. Covenant.

Word = Music. Ezekiel 37:22. Take two sticks. Look it up, you will see it.

Ezekiel 33 : 30,31,32, A chief musician, still yet to come.

Your work is a stepstone to visualizing, what people cant see.

    Bravo

  • once you learn how to sing the words in order it actually seems kinda slow. hahaha but this is awesome. im making a jumpcut music video to this song hopefully this weekend :p

  • Check out the "name checks" section of Wikipedia:

    Life_Is_a_Rock_(But_the_Radio_Rolled_Me)

  • Bravo for what it took to make this video!

  • PERFECT TIMING DUDE!!

  • Good Job!

    Electrician's Wife

  • It's awesome!!!

  • the "jack the ripper" was a reference to a song by link wray

  • Good job!

  • I used to be able to do the first verse all without a mistake. My best friend Donnie would do the second. We'd both sing the chorus together and laugh our asses off when we pulled it off. LOL OMG we laughed like fools. :)

  • Wolfman Jack picture - good call - I hope they played this song at his wake

  • The original rap song!

  • Truly a fantastic video! Thanks for the fun (but too short) trip down memory lane!

  • Oh my goodness, I herd this on XM today and couldn't believe what I was hearing. This song is AMAZING!!! It kinda reminds me of "We Didn't Start The Fire - Billy Joel" with the speed of the lyrics and some of the rhythem in the background. This is deffinatly one of my new favorite songs.

  • good job..great song and great video...you did awesome

  • great song thanks for the memories

  • Bravo! Thank you for putting this vid together!

  • I practiced this song until I could sing it all the way through. Sadly, I can only sing each stanza in a falsetto-like voice as it takes far too much air capacity to sing it in a normal voice. No wonder that Mr. Levine had to slice the lines together in the original. It's also no wonder that this song cannot be sung live with a single singer. Great song though, and great video representation! Glad you posted it!

  • Great video of a forgotten classic. A trip to kitschy coo park in 3 min.

  • did you caught the "wilson pickett snot" LOL

  • Great job. I've always loved this song. When I was a kid, we would try to follow along with the lyrics, but I never could. Not until I became older, however.

  • If nobody else brought it up, Kama Sutra refers to a record label.

  • oh my my my my! you are a genius to put this together. i am officially a fan of yours forever.

    what great, great video!!!

  • Great images...

  • Fantastic work here!!! Wow! One correction...Phoebe King is actually "B.B. King, the great blues guitarist. VERY nice work!

  • Absolutely great job putting this together

  • Someone may have already said this in the comments below, but I think where you have "Carly Simon, I behold her", the real lyric must be "Carly Simon, Noddy Holder"

Noddy was in the 70s glam group Slade. Probably the lead singer

  • my favorite song.!

  • excellent!!!!!!!!

  • You did a great job on this one!!

  • I can't believe nobody has mentioned that there's a slightly different version of this song, with just a few of the names substituted, recorded by Tracey Ullman before she went full-time into comedy.

  • thank you

  • Who is the soloist singing this song? He does an excellent job?

  • @avis61002 The band is Reunion. The singer is Joey Levine

  • AWESOME!

  • Absolutely GREAT!!

  • Very Nice, Very Nice!

    Great Job!

  • Excellent job on this video! I used to know all the words to this song- got old when everyone wanted to me to do it at parties lol

  • Great job on the video & to a great song ROCK ON

  • We used to be able to bring in records to music class, and Crystal Greer brought this in. She was my all-time crush, red hair and all. This song always make me think of her and how much fun it was back in Joliet, Il, in the 1970's!

  • Great job on this video !

  • Check out Hank Snow doing "I've Been Everywhere" and Leroy Van Dyke doing "The Auctioneer"!

  • this was rap way before we knew what rap was,and i can;t figure when he''s taking a breath amazing tune

  • Awesome job! I was 12 when this song came out and now that I hear it again and see your graphics, I realize that I was singing half of it wrong! But considering that we listened to music on scratchy little AM transistor radios, it probably wasn't coming through clearly in the first place. Thanks for posting a great video!

  • Great Great Job! I remember when this song came out. I always loved it. Thanks Alot for taking me back to 1974 and our lake on the farm in Iowa. God it was a good time to be a kid..We swam, helped our dad on the farm, picked fruit, corn and messed around in the moonlight with great songs like this always blaring out of the radio in my dads red coupe de ville.

  • WOW! What a great job you did on this. I remember trying to sign along with this song. LOL

  • Got my vote as the first rap song... but no one will ever give credit. a friend of mine in high school had this memorized very shortly after it came out, and could do it right along with the track back then!

  • High beams at 1:07

    Great job!

  • gotta say u did well on this video. it was a lotta fun to watch. great job!!!!!!!

  • i acually have the whole song memorized and can speed it up a full second, which if anybody is like me, knows that a full second is really fast compared to an origiinal. && i can speed it up .6 of a second! yay!

  • What a good job putting this video together. Do you have all of these lp's in your collection? Just getting all of the graphics together was a big job.

  • Google image search is amazing :)

  • Why isn't this song at all of the Karaoke bars ? ? ? LOL

  • great job putting this together... A+

  • My total RESPECTS! (I'd gasp for air!)*****

  • dang im gonna memorize this!

  • I would say this is the original & first rap song. lol.

  • Also, in the 3rd verse, in the line "Edgar Winters Joanie Sommers Ides of March and Johnny Thunder" I think the reference is to one-hit-wonder Johnny Thunder, who recorded "Loop-De-Loop" as opposed to Johnny Thunders, the punk singer.

  • They used to perform on The Perry Como Show. Also, I don't know if you agree with me, but I believe the line "Pete Peter Paul and Mary Mary" may have several references, the most obvious being to Peter Paul and Mary. But a more subtle one, I think, is to Peter Paul, the candy maker (Mounds, Almond Joy, Powerhouse, Caravelle, etc.) Joey Levine, who co-wrote "Life is a Rock", also wrote jingles for Peter Paul. Also "Mary Mary" may be a subtle reference to the Monkees' song "Mary Mary".

  • I LOVE your video! I love this song, and I love all the Youtube interpretations I've seen of it so far, but so far you're the only one thgat I've seen that got the Ray Charles Singers reference correct! Alot of people think the reference is to Ray Charles, the jazz pianist, but I belieive you got the right picture for it-The Ray Charles Singers that Joey Levine is refering to were a choral group under the direction of Ray Charles, no relation to the jazz pianist.

  • *gasps for air*

  • I tried singing this at karoke. I SUCKED!!!!!!! I still love the song though!

  • I love it!

  • johnny cash and johnny rivers, can't stop now, i've got the shivers :D :D

  • Freddy King and Albert King and BB King and frolicking- get it on and Nat Gerardy Papilardy Hale and Hearty. :-/

  • After reading all comments, if you listen REAL CLOSE, you can hear breaks...this was NOT sung in one take...no way, listen, you can hear the breaks ;)

  • Bravo! Man, you did a freakin FANTASTIC job with this, if it took you longer than an hour after compiling all the snaps, it wouldn't surprise me one bit. THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS!!!

One question I have, what editor did you use, as I want to make some vids for cueing me with lyrics...I also love that funky font you used for the purple lettering...care to share this info, please?

  • Fantastic!!

  • Excellent job

  • FABULOUS ! You deserve an award for that compilation !

  • Awesome Job!!! Thanks!! Love it to Pieces!!!!

  • Awesome! Love it!!

  • AHAHA THIS IS FUNNY

  • this inspired the lipsmackinthirstquencinchin coca cola advert

  • Silly song but wonderful work on the editing.

  • This great, wish they had done this back in the day!

  • I agree. I only found it (pre-YouTube a few years ago) by typing nonsense lyrics I could barely remember. It took many guesses, (try tapping your memory from being six years old), but I found it!

  • Love this song, love your video! 5stars!

  • Why did this song get completey shelved?? I haven't heard it played since it charted the top ten in 74. Can my stations please dust it off and play, so I don't have to hear "Kung Fu Fighting" or "Bennie and the Jets" for the 1000th time?

  • same here, radio host said he plays it one time a year and thats all it needs. What??? it needs to be played way more!

  • Life is a rock, and rock and roll will never die for ever and ever thanks budy this is a great song

  • hah brings back way way ol memories

  • I definitely cannot but thanks for letting me try :)

  • My brother has it on 8-track.

  • Takes me back to my high school days. thanks for posting.

  • you are simply TOO MUCH!...

    excellent!

  • Until I saw this used on Life On Mars, I had no idea that it was a real song - rather just something goofy composed for The Specials.

  • Hey gang dakotajims gonna teach you how to sing Life Is A Rock (But The Radio Rolled Me) just follow the words BY CLICKING MORE INFO ON THE TOP RIGHT HAND CORNER and scroll done just a bit!

  • Loved the opening of Life on Mars last night with this song.

  • Listen and remember..

  • Love it..love 70's music.

  • Awesome 1970's!!

  • uh...on one or a million breathes i cant do it...its like blah ah too fast!!! lol

  • Brother, You are good at what you do!!!! What a fun song. I'm too slow so I need the words written for me.PLEASE

  • WOW!!!! What a classic blast from the past this is. I remember this song very well at the height of the 1970s. I also like the vintage McDonald's commercial they did as a take off on this.

  • Holy shit that song reminds me of my first GF in fall 74 and when her bro inl law used to drive us around in his datsun 510

  • AWESOME!!!!!!!!!

  • `Great Job! You are a master editer!

  • This is one of those songs that when you hear it, you remember exactly where you were when you first heard it.

Also, if you remember Savage Garden's "I Want You", you'll notice how similar the verse sections sound!

  • Helluva job on really hard song to put a video to. 5's all the way man. Thanks mccrackin for the share.

  • This really should be on VH1 or something - it is wonderful! And so professionally done.

  • Seriously, it should, I think it would be a hit, how can anyone not like this.

  • this was on radio w-o-w 59 am,omaha ne. so do alittle research before you think you made someone loenzomuzik.

  • MarnieLynn,

Thanks for putting this together. I bought this 45 when it first came out.

    Great song and great vid!

  • I remember when this song came out. It got lots of airplay. And I always envisioned this kind of interpretation and subsequent discussion would happen.

    So I made you!

  • this was played ounce an hour, it was requested more but they said fcc ruling would not allow it.

  • When this came out a local radio station had a contest to name all the people or groups labeled in this song. It took 2 weeks of play time before the first person won the contest.

  • how many times did they put on the song? :D

  • I wish that You Tube had some kind of awards to hand out...this video deserves several! GREAT editing, wonderful choices for the graphics to illustrate the lyrics, a palpable sense of humor and a super song to base it all on...what more could we ask for?

This one's going in my favorites NOW!

  • i like the font u used awesome song and vid!

  • wow.. i belive this is about the 20th time ive seen ur video its great..

  • awesome!!!!!

  • This is beyond awesome. I am 45, I work with 20 something year olds, they think that I am strange for listening to this, but i tell them that this is sooooooo much better than the stuff they have today.

  • I know this is amazing right? And besides, don't be discouraged at all, because..... I am 17 and hell if I haven't loved this stuff since I was like 7. I can sing this whole song, breath per verse. I also love stuff like and I'll be damned if I've never done the Locomotion while on roller skates at a near by rink - on a field trip with my friends. I personally think it's totally bad ass that people still are keeping this alive for those of us who do love it. =]

  • I love this song but you can't do it in one breath. LOL!

  • This is great

  • Jerry Wexler is said right before Randy Newman

  • Oh, for crying out loud, I can't believe some nitwit gave this less than 5 stars. Absolutely superb video!!! And you provided the words, yet? Thanks so much for posting this.

  • Fixed it! Now it's five stars! LOL!

  • albert king with stevie ray vaughan. rip stevie. i know you are.

  • Thank you so much!

I remember as a kid playing that 45 at 33 & 16 trying so hard to figure out the lyrics. It was so popular and I thought if I could do it I would be so popular. I think this is the first rap song...lol. Anyway...thank you for figuring out so many of the artists that he was singing about (as well as songs)...INCREDIFBLE. It took me back.

    Brian

You knew he was going to mention "Yummy Yummy Yummy" in there!

  • Really nice job. I used to know this whole song...when it came out. You did it justice. Thanks.

  • The vocals were done by the lead singer of the Ohio Express,JOEY LEVINE!! I don't know how they got him,but WHAT A GREAT IDEA,HUH?!! Michael Boyce

  • WOW amazing editing. . . bud.

  • I'm pretty sure since he said Albert King and Freddie King that he meant to say BB King (a natural groupinga) and just got tongue tied and it came out Phoebe King. Really good work!

  • I've always loved this song. Joey Levine has the perfect voice for bubblegum. This is a terrific video, thanks SO MUCH. It's really fun to watch and brings back lots of memories. I love the white ball shaped radio/8 track player.
