  • Very nice , very well spoken with a lot of meaning !!!!! I'm a mix bag of martial arts (not mma). Just a little bit of everything and i like the philosophy of Sensei Swain. Thanks for the good advise !!!!!!! OOS.

  • Ben from JKA England here. A martial arts instructor with as much intellectual insight as Sensei Swain is extremely rare to come by, and his words were incredibly inspirational. I have posted this video onto our club's facebook page for them to watch. I will be testing for my yellow belt next month :)

  • amazing video! I never practiced karate. But I think, it doesn't matter what kind of martial art you are practicing, the mind and body connection and their development is a lot more important than just learning how to fight other people. It's too bad, that a lot people who's praticing just don't get it.

anyway, I really enjoyed the video, I think I will check out karate someday :)

  • I started with karate really recently, but I was pushed that way from studying Bushido and the life of the samurai. Now I`m also reading and trying to practice Zen and I believe that karate will help me become a better person in following the virtues of Bushido in my daily life. Being a good man is much more important than being able to kick someone in a fight, in my opinion. Thank you for the inspirational speech, sensei Swain, I shall remember your wise words!

  • nice explanation, thanks

  • i've been training in tae kwon do, ju jitsu , and boxing for the last 10 years and honestly even though i do not train in karate i still think this instructor is brilliant

  • @MrClinton19

I have forwarded your comment to Sensei Swain. Thanks for the kind words. He is a great teacher indeed.

  • @DavidLiban thank you. i've seen other instructors in action who dont care about the students inward growth and developement, its just nice to see one that has a good philosophy and training system geared toward the student and not the dollar. And thank you for posting this video, i enjoyed it very much.

  • You are a good man and I am sure a good teacher. I agree with your philosophy. I have been training in Japan for many years in traditional Karate and Kobujutsu. Belt is not important, only your heart and training. Bravo.

  • Really inspiring video, the whole video has the calm mind set that Karateka look for. I trained from a 14-17 year old and got to 1st Kyu, life then got in the way and I rejoined 4 years ago (after a 12 year break) from where I left off and hopefully will attempt my first dan this year once I feel I'm ready and have done enough time served. Our UK Facebook group is facebook.com/#!/pages/Crewe-Shogun-Traditional-Karate/180250138680727 please feel free to join... OSS...

  • This is a very good video clip sensei Swain. I like it indeed. (Odd note above about Philippinos and Japanese being better at forms?) I have lived in both places for years and but don't know what the statement has to do with your video. Good job Sensei. Dwight Holley, 47 yrs Shotokan Karate training.(still very much a student)

  • This is a great video of a great instructor. A real Karateka indeed. Ken

  • Too bad you guys aren´t in the JKA. Return to JKA.

  • @MariusWM Associations don't mean anything.

  • Sensei Swain has summed up what karate and any good instructor/dojo is really about.

  • Osu from México Sensei

  • i really enjoyed this video i am very new to shotokan karate but i train very hard and have been also letting my little sister come with me to my classes and i find that she has really developed a lot since she has been training with me and i am really proud at how far she has come

  • Very beautiful! The interwiev is very educating!

  • 15 years ago I had to quit Karate as a Go Kyu Karate-ka because of Back surgery. Life took over, keeping me away, but I am now coming back. I am starting again at the beginning, but am loving every minute of it! Sensei Swain is right, it is life long and is much more than kicking and punching and blocking.

I rather like the idea of Black Belt being "Master of Basics", and I feel like taking up the challenge implied in the "very few" that get up to the higher levels!

    Ossu!

  • Thank you very much for your response. I am glad you appreciated this video and the words of Swain Sensei.

  • I really enjoyed this video! a great teacher and hardworking students. quite different from what we see some gyms out there who defame the name of karate.

My congratulations to you all who participated in this video

    OSS!

  • I think Mr. Swain Sensei is 100% correct. In Japanese there is a word Shin Shin which means the cultivastion of mind body and soul. In Ho Oo Ryu martial arts there is a kata(form) that is called Sanchin kata, which maybe translated into English as the Three wars Form. I believe the "Three Wars" are the unification of the mind, body and soul. The internal struggle is the true battle. Osu

  • Japanese and Filipinos are better when it comes to forms.

  • @ethanaverelle07

I suppose that depends on the particular skills of the Japanese or Filipino people in question.

  • @ethanaverelle07 Sir

What about Chinese and Koreans are they not good too? Young man, I was just joking it is not your race or nationality or gender but the time and desire you put into your art form. Osu

  • @1banryukyu Okay. I agree with you. Osu

  • "Karate is a microcosm of life."

  • wish he was in Texas

  • Rei from me as well. I am a 1st Dan and been practicing Shotokan for 4 years now, and hopefully many more to come. It is a lifelong Pursuit.

  • @Shotokan187

Thank you for watching. I am just a 5th Kyu at this point, but karate become a very important part of my life. Sensei Swain has been a very helpful in my growth as a karateka.

  • @Shotokan187 Shotokan is something i intend to do next. I'm studying Chinese Kempo, I've been at it for 5 yrs & i hold a brown belt!

  • Gary Swan is a god Karate Master.

  • Positive, calm, sensible stuff. Just look at the students to see what the Sensei is about. They clearly love their karate and show their respect for him with their concentration and commitment. Great to see, all the very best to you all from Wales, U.K.

  • Rei from Seikukan Antwerp, Belgium.

  • This words of wisdom should be basic in every dojo. Ossu

  • Sensei Swain,

Excellent presentation of what karate is about and of what it offers. I wholeheartedly agree with what you have put forth in this video.

I wish you all the best with your dojo and your students. Osu!

  • I'm a Shotokan Karateka from the UK. It is refreshing to see such a genuine American Sensei who shares the traditional philosophies of Karate unlike all the egomaniacal badge and stripe plastered McDojo Senseis. Much respect and I am taught the same philosophy i as this Sensei's

  • I moved to the Denver area several years ago. Having trained in karate for 30 years, I was very concerned about who I was going to find to train under. Despite his uncanny ability to teach both children and adults in a gentler, more modern manner than he and I were taught, he is at heart a good, old-fashioned, traditional hardass. And I mean that in the most complementary way. He would not be too far out of place in the JKA Honbu dojo in 1955. I feel very fortunate to have found him.

  • Andrew, yes he is a wonderful, committed sensei. I feel lucky to learn from him.

  • What a great Sensei! Osu! Thank you for sharing!

  • Well Spoken of Sensei Gary ,thnx Oss
