Here's my question. Instead of an absolute C&D, why not make it a conditional C&D? Make them send in a treatment saying exactly what they are going to do with the project, and hold them to completing it. Start the opening of the completed project with an "ad" (if you want to call it that) advertising Chrono Trigger products you can actually get (ie: CT:DS) that are completed.

They were going to release Chrono trigger DS and it was going to be a big surprise and buld up a lot of expectation (and money) for Square enix, but this project was much more ambitious and well-executed than just making the SNES game into a handheld console.

What I don’t understand is how a group of people for the past few years have been recreating the original Half-Life into Black Mesa Source and not once has there been an issue with that, but when someone tries to do the same (in this case Chrono Trigger Resurrection) it gets shut down just like that! Personally they should continue on making this and post a petition singed by over 5 million people asking SquareEnix to grant the rights to re-master the game.

I was speaking about Valve not minding about Black Mesa Source.
I'm pretty sure Valve would have stopped them if they had been doing it on another engine (e.g. Ogre 3D, idTech 3), which doesn't require Steam and a purchased copy of a modern Valve game.

Valve supports fan projects like the remake of HL1 known as Black Mesa. Square Enix should better learn to communicate with the community rather than act like snobs.
It's more of a copyright issue I think, and as much as I hate to admit it square has the right to exercise it. My guess squarenix is afraid of the focus on this remake, and is afraid of more fan re-makes of the game for free.
On a different note, I applaude your efforts for making this game. Just from the Trailer alone, it looks very promising and well done graphic-wise, considering this is fan-based. If you make another game in the future, I'll be sure to look it up.

No, enix was another company, with a nice load of cash, so they said, hey, you work for us, you get the cash, and just to mk it look like they weren't buying sqaure, they joined company's to square enix, the biggest reason for keeping the "Square" is that everybody knew they made games, but enix had the cash to make almost anything happen.
This brings me back... oh so far back... to when I was 7 years old playing RPGs... gosh.. I love this and the old school graphics. Mega kudos to the team that was working on this.
the reason you only see chrono is because thats how far they got up to. they never got up to the millenium fair yet. but even though they didnt get that far, its still alot of work. they basicly had to remake the entire game except 60 times better looking. 3D mods are extremely difficult
It stinks that they had to kill the project. I do not understand why Square Soft did not endorse this idea. It would have been a big hit just as it was when the original was released. I still play it from time to time.
I say they did a great job with what they were able to accomplish. Kudos to the designers and programmers who worked on it.

What I don’t understand is how a group of people for the past few years have been recreating the original Half-Life into Black Mesa Source and not once has there been an issue with that, but when someone tries to do the same (in this case Chrono Trigger Resurrection) it gets shut down just like that! Personally they should continue on making this and post a petition singed by over 5 million people asking SquareEnix to grant the rights to re-master the game.

They could shut it down, but it would only damage their image and scare away developers from their platform.
Can't really establish a parallel with a completely independent fan remake that would only mean direct competition.

People who what to *play* the Black Mesa will *need* to buy a game from Valve and install Steam. In short: it serves Valve's best interest.
This Chrono Trigger remake however is technologically independent from the proprietors of the brand and copyright of Chrono Trigger; in fact, it's competing directly with them with no sort of compensation,

I'm pretty sure Valve would have stopped them if they had been doing it on another engine (e.g. Ogre 3D, idTech 3), which doesn't require Steam and a purchased copy of a modern Valve game.

Black Mesa Source directly brings Valve more costumers.
This remake does no such thing for Square Enix.

Both companies have the (legal) right to stop anyone from doing a remake of their games.
Square Enix exerted their right and stopped Chrono Trigger Resurrection.
Valve chose not to use their right to stop Black Mesa Source.
Most companies would do what Square did, Valve was the exception.
Why didn't Valve do anything? Because it furthered their goals by requiring users to install Steam and buy a game from them.

Valve is also a money-hungry beast, but they're not in the business of rehashing every game a dozen of times - which is why they are more lenient about someone making a remake of an old game of theirs (provided it's on *their* technology and there's no price involved).

It's more of a copyright issue I think, and as much as I hate to admit it square has the right to exercise it. My guess squarenix is afraid of the focus on this remake, and is afraid of more fan re-makes of the game for free.
On a different note, I applaude your efforts for making this game. Just from the Trailer alone, it looks very promising and well done graphic-wise, considering this is fan-based. If you make another game in the future, I'll be sure to look it up.

esse jogo era pra ter sido um sucesso, os graficos e os detalhes do trailer ficaram muito coerentes ao jogo original da Square. Os produtores do jogo eram pra estar milionarios hoje, mas a Square se sentiu ofendida por eles terem roubado o jogo dela, e mandaram uma advertencia obrigando eles a pararem com o projeto. Adorei o trailer, tem todos os detalhes do game original, e está muito bem desenhado!

What really bugs me, is that this game could even now, compete to other games out there today. And that really says something consindering that they havn't worked on it for like, 2 years or so.
I mean, it is a remake. So they do already have the frames layed out before them.
The graphics are charming, and perfectly suits the game.
I agree with raCteJ, If SquareEnix bought the team, it'd take a maximun of 2-3 years to finish it.
This game alone, stands above all the Final Fantasy series.

No, enix was another company, with a nice load of cash, so they said, hey, you work for us, you get the cash, and just to mk it look like they weren't buying sqaure, they joined company's to square enix, the biggest reason for keeping the "Square" is that everybody knew they made games, but enix had the cash to make almost anything happen.

the reason you only see chrono is because thats how far they got up to. they never got up to the millenium fair yet. but even though they didnt get that far, its still alot of work. they basicly had to remake the entire game except 60 times better looking. 3D mods are extremely difficult

It stinks that they had to kill the project. I do not understand why Square Soft did not endorse this idea. It would have been a big hit just as it was when the original was released. I still play it from time to time.
I say they did a great job with what they were able to accomplish. Kudos to the designers and programmers who worked on it.

I can give you a very good reason why. These retarded japs and their greedy companies are only looking for profit. They see their consumers as nothing more than pigs that they can feed off of.
Nevertheless, they won't remake an "epic game." Although trailers for FF7's remake, chrono trigger for the ds, etc. were made, the actual game wasn't remade in its 3d glory. If they did so, they might tarnish the name of the game. Instead, they choose to make spin-offs, remakes of crappier games (ff4)etc
