What a great sound Chris. I'm a player of a very basic set myself and envy your increased range. I love this Bach cello piece and listen to it often and am frankly surprised/delighted to hear it played on the pipes. Very inspiring!
Amazing. The sound of the smallpipes sends chills down my spine. I'm a Northumbrian, my grandfather and uncle both played the pipes. Just hearing the sound, it's like I'm back home in the hills south of Lowick ...
@lgv1989 That would be called a drone. A bagpipe has to have it to function; the air is constantly being forced out of the bag, so you cant just stop and start like on a flute, and the drones make sure that there isnt too much air in the bag.
I heard from an old friend recently - an accordion player. He told me he was working on The Goldberg Variations on his squeeze box! These unexpected musical conjunctions are fascinating. Thank you.
crackin'. You gotta love Bach's chromaticism on pipes. I'm a GHB player myself, but I can really appreciate the beauty of these pipes. Such a great sound. Very interesting to see you play. Very different technique and what a range. Beats the crap out of our 9-12 notes. We do have you on volume, however. lol. Thanks for sharing!
Soulful and beautify nuanced..the intensity builds up and UP very artistically...clearly sees the Big Picture of what he's doing. The drone grew on me after the initial shock. And the "creative" means of adapting the melody notes (when nearing the end) to the particular needs of his instrument was well done. Bravo.
I play the violin unusually well, and I posted a rendition of this famous piece of ear (mind and soul) candy on my channel. It's a little jazzy, but it's all there ;-)
Far from perfect, but really, really beautiful! What a great sensation to hear the harmonical changes of the melody against the drone of Your pipes! Modal chromaticism, wow!
I will be honest with you, I thought this was going to be another really cheese rendition of a beautiful Bach piece ( there are lots out there for various different instruments as you may find out through searching on youtube) - But this was superb. Definitely one of the best versions ive heard, and possibly the next best thing to an organ. I imagine if it was played in a church, the acoustics would really compliment the sounds of the pipes and the piece.
Yours was one of the most perceptive comments I've read all month...and I completely concur. About the 'cheese renditions' (ugh)...and especially about this musician. Yes, he is legitimately impressive. I absolutely enjoyed his playing.
Otis, I hope that you might consider checking out one of my own renditions of this venerable and sublime melody. (Video comment above.) I can play it slow or fast...but this is one of my more peppy goes at it.
excelent!! there is another version of this tune played on galega bagpipe performed by carlos nuñez and excelent spanish piper, you should check it out
My chanter has 18 keys, and even that isn't quite enough to play the tune without some modifications. FYI, I have the following notes on my chanter, from the bottom: G A B C C# D E F F# g g# a a# b c c# d d# e f f# g' g#' a' b' c'. You may have also spotted that I'm playing it with essentially C major fingering, which maximises the range I have. It would be possible to play elements of this tune on an 11-keyed chanter, but you'd have to do a fair amount of modifying to make it fit.
how do u play this!? how does it make the sound?!

How many keys does the chanter need to play this piece? I have an 11 key set in F and would really like to learn this if possible.
