These foreign 'journalists' are funny. They look long & hard to try to find something that makes America look bad in hopes of making their cold, dark viewers in England feel better.
I was just in Centralia this past Friday, and had the chance to speak to some folks in Ashland who had connections to Centralia. In my mind, the people who remain in Centralia aren't really squatters. They still own their homes, but not actually the land they sit on. So if they wanted out now, they would get fair market value (maybe, maybe not) for the house only, not the land. Does that necessarily make them squatters? BTW, the interior of St Mary's Russian Orthodox Church is beautiful!
@MAMsMom97 You said they still own their homes but not the actual land they sit on. Welcome to modern America. When we buy "land" the titles are real estate only... that goes for you, me and everyone in this country. We've got to end the corruption and get land patents! I'm pretty damn pissed off by the fact that we are basically lied to by the courthouse, banks and higher government by causing us to believe we own the "land" we "buy". If we owned land they could NOT take it away!
I was saddened to read on the Internet that Mr. Mervine is now in a nursing home and can barely remember people he knows. He is in his 90's now. But no matter where he is physically or mentally, I know his spirit will always live in Centralia.

What a tragic, sad situation. I'm surprised it took so long for me to hear about it.

This is definitely the best documentary piece on Centralia that exists on YouTube.
