Why are musicians so bloody arrogant? It's just a movie people, how can you be insulted by that.
I never understand why people with a talent for music, are always so much more arrogant about it than people with other great talents. It's just a talent just like any other talent, not something divine...
@xMithras im sorry but music it is divine...and the ones who posses music talent is a divine gift...beethoven said it himself...we musicians r closer to god than any man can be....
@xMithras Hi :) I just wanted to comment that not all musicians are arrogant, some of us are really good and very humble and good people to...Plus, great musicians is not just a talent, all human beings are talented, however it takes a minute to learn and a life to master, professional music world is demandant, strict and consumes time and lots of effort, as any other professional world. And for me, music is divine becouse is my passion as you may have something divine... :)
@xMithras no, musical talent is the best talent anyone can have since music is the purest of all arts. It's the essence of life. I doubt there is something more divine than music.
Why does it have to be 100% match the history!? This is just a movie, not a discovery documentary. This is an interesting approach and this is always the case with historical fictions. The movie was good, i would say 7/10.
I saw the movie last night at 5am and the very scene where Beethoven mooned at Anna Holtz made me sick. They could have presented a much more better Beethoven and add more to the nature of Karl or his fight with his mother over his custody. Overall the movie was okay
@FeynmanQuantum and what, portray a gentleman and kind elderly beethoven?he had the reputation of such a character and it really doesn't come as a surprise considering all he's been through and his condition. Both Oldman and Harris did a wonderful job but immortal beloved was better overall and portrayed the same vulgar Beethoven.
Well, i'm to a classical musician, but i enjoyed the movie. Shore, there are some not correct moments (like Beethoven mentioning the Appasionata sonata, when actually it was named like that 20 years after his death), but what i really like about the movie, is that it focuses on the music, not just the story telling or biography. The explanations at the end about what he wants to convey with his music are absorbing and overall Ed Harris performes very well.
It's a work of fiction. Troll fucks. No wonder why so many people hates 'Inglourious Basterds', since it is ALSO a work of fiction. And both of them are kick-asses movies.
He knew, understood, and could feel music. Even after going completely deaf he composed his Ninth Symphony. This is true dedication to art, none have been so dedicated since this man.
If you guys saw the movie... you will realise that the Beethoven at that part didnt make the mistake... its not a mistake... more like a test to see if that old man can truely understand his music...
I never pictured Ed as Beethoven, but he did great! And yes, I find the Beethoven mistake sort of insulting, but I think He is okay with up there, we know He didn't make any mistake, but it is a good movie, even if it is fiction. No one can get Beethoven perfect, he was a man of brilliance, there will be mistakes
@wishingonthemoon1 hehe, maybe, but believe me, if you knew Beethoven, you'd know he would be insulted. he would call us all asses and shit and burst into flames. or at least, that's what you can tell reading the stories of his life (his real life, not this FICTION)
"he can;t hear you...he is deaf." then after that, the woman and Beethoven talk like beethoven is not deaf at all! and why,for God's sake, they made this woman who always correct beethoven? tsk.such a bad movie!
this is a stupid movie....they made fun of Beethoven...how I wish there is a law...a law about films base on an actual man especially those who are well respected...I feel so pity for Beethoven...they always make fun of him.
Utterly beautiful^^ Diane Kruger as Anna Holtz is superbly beautiful... Ed Harris as Ludwig van is incredible!! Loved the story, haha There's Matthew Goode, Ed Harris and Diane Kruger, what more could you ask for haha BRILlIANT.. Just finished watching it^^
even though this movie pretty much is just imaginative wish fulfillment for the director, it's still a whole lot better than immortal beloved, which kinda sucked in my opinion. although amadeus is the best composer movie.
Copying Beethoven avoids the obvious path of developing the relationship between Beethoven and Anna into something romantic....if you like this kind of movie you can watch it at
Love Beethoven, love the cinematography, the wardrobe...all that stuff *looks* great.
As always though Hollywood delivers some shallow, historically perverted piece of crap...all show and fluff, dramatic lofty speak with no substance or basis in truth.
I was offended as a musician an a big Beethoven's fan , when I saw , in this movie , the scene when she "corrected" him . If you are making some movie based on an actual man , or an event , you have some responsibility because not all people know much about that man/event .
Sorry... your reaction is a little bit stupid : Anna is hearing a conversation between Beethoven and Schlimmer... and 'translates' !!! PLEASE...Look at ALL the details of a film… thank you!
I am 'a fan' of Ludwig van, Darkoni [detail... his grandfather was living in Mechelen (Malines in French- Belgium], I have a real veneration for the most famous composer of all times, I think that I know 'a little bit' [Jean et Brigitte Massin, Romain Rolland, etc.] the life of this genious [Génie in French !]... BUT... 'Copying Beethoven' is a movie, isn't !? Then... cool, no!? With the pleasure [please, excuse the 'quality' of 'my English'] to read You !
"Mais quelle humiliation lorsque quelqu'un près de moi entendait une flûte au loin et que je n'entendais rien, (...) ; de tels événements m'ont poussé jusqu'au bord du désespoir, il s'en fallut de peu que je ne misse fin à mes jours. C'est l'art et seulement lui, qui m'a retenu, (…)"
Ludwig van Beethoven, Heiligenstadt, le 6 octobre 1802.
That’s NOT a movie, Darkoni ! Then… the scenario of S.. Rivele and Ch. Wilkinson… a heavy mistake !?
@Darkoni2000 why feeling offended? it´s a movie, with funny and romantic touches. i particullary loved that part, and i loved the fact that someone, specially a woman, could have corrected such a great genious, even when this is not true. Actually many genious had pupils that inspired them. Like Rodin with Camille Claudel.
Historically, this movie is beyond ridiculous, but in terms of sheer entertainment, it's not bad. Ed Harris did a great job. I'd argue that it was better than Oldman's take.
As a girl, I've got to say that I"m really sick of this trend of insisting that somehow women are the real brains behind everything. This movie acts like the credit really goes to Beethoven's copyist.
Beethoven was a musical genius and the credit for his work should stay squarely with him.
This movie looks good. But its message is wrong. Essentially, they are exploiting Beethoven and not giving him credit for his masterpieces which he composed.
@cyclone1508 no,ofcourse bot they are just dumb stupid! beethoven composed this when he is TOTALLY DEAF! no one did that aside form him!(i mean the 9th symphony!)
People, Beethoven didn't conduct his 9nth symphony when it premiered, he just sat at the side. Apparently there were two legends, one was when his symphony finished he couldn't hear any applause so he cried. Another was that the audience threw their hats in the air to show their appreciation for the music. But neither involved him composing.
Technically, Nicholas Wager, the Conductor for the main orchestra in Vienna, conducted the Ninth Symphony. Beethoven was there, standing at the side, with a copy of the music, directing it himself, but Wagner told the musicians to ignore the deaf composer.
Isn't it ironic that through inequality comes this travesty of a film. Instead of claiming actual equality in a truthful manor, moves resort to this trash. Instead of telling a truthful account of a woman's triumph over adversity, we are left with the belittlement of a genius. How sad it is. I am outraged, and utterly disgusted.
no one plays it, but he (beethoven) asks anna what is her favorite piano sonata of his, then told her that he figured it out, he exclaimed "the moonlight!" and then he mooned her lol
A helpful trailer: A fictional love story with sufficient focus on music and genius I would have watched; but this feminist travesty, never. I hope the lesbians behind this movie don't mind that I'm not going to buy it, because I would have.
Gary Oldman is the best Beethoven I ever seen. Beethoven was EXTREMELY egoistic. He would have NEVER tolerated what she said in the trailer. 'I corrected it'
It is a very good movie. I know that some of the things are not historically accurate but I think the important thing is that the genius and out of the world talent of Beethoven was communicated to the viewers. The actors were superb especially Ed Harris. He made a great Beethoven characterwise although we will never know how he really was in true life, this movie did its best to portray this amazing person.
beethoven never learned to read lips. He used to carry conversation notebooks. so it appears the movie isn't that accurate already. It's a fiction drama inspired on the character of beethoven, but it is not beethoven's story in any way. Anna Holtz is a made up character. NO ONE ever altered the work of beethoven.
It is a very ggod movie, but it is not even close to the events of his life. And I agree, Gary Oldman is the best Beethoven.
the movie was very good i loved it!!! when it came to the part where he was doing his 9th...WHOA!!! the power of it...i have an awesome sound system and it felt like i was there it was great part of the movie...very moving
I haven't seen it either, but I didn't care for Immortal Beloved. Amadeus was a great movie, but Beethoven is hard to pull off - Mozart is cool, but Beethoven is too intense for modern tastes. And I can't imagine doing a movie about Bach - 20 kids?
Bach didn't write symphonies, they hadn't been invented yet. He wrote counterpoint, which is very mathematical when you analyse it but like all composers he put it together in his head as he was writing. He was known to improvise complex fugues - the set called The Musical Offering was mostly improvised for King Frederick the Great and written down afterwards.
Beethoven was also a great improviser, so he could pour it out on demand. But he was also a perfectionist, who kept making corrections to his scores - that's why they look chaotic. But he kept meticulous notes, and you can see his ideas evolving in his notebooks. Also his work more complex, less formulaic and on a larger scale than anything that had gone before, so he was breaking new ground, groping his way forward. My 2c worth.
Does anyone know if Anna holtz really exists?

Gary Oldman is the best Beethoven I ever seen. Beethoven was EXTREMELY egoistic. He would have NEVER tolerated what she said in the trailer. 'I corrected it'

i thought he didnt finish his 9th symphony..........
bmchellek 3 years ago
He definetly finished the 9th Symphony. There were rumors he was working on his 10th and that wasn't finished.

Oh yeah, I cried at the scene in the opera. When the chorus started singing it was heavenly I just wished the movie reached a wider audience.

Appears to be very historically accurate.

beethoven never learned to read lips.
And I agree, Gary Oldman is the best Beethoven.

how did beethoven understand what the people were saying if he was deaf?
Medievalpopcorn 4 years ago
He used ear horns before he became totally deaf, and he had people write in conversation books that he kept around.

And why not Harris? I think Agnieszka must like him (me too!) and to work with him - they made together at least 3 films.

Beethoven is the greatest achievement of mankind!
stradhex 5 years ago 3
Him or Bach or Mozart, it's close. Mozart came closest to perfection, IMHO - Beethoven is sometimes clumsy, Bach is sometimes mechanical.

I haven´t seen the movie but... which Beethoven acting do you prefer Harris or Oldman's?
juncatv 4 years ago
I haven't seen it either, but I didn't care for Immortal Beloved. Amadeus was a great movie, but Beethoven is hard to pull off - Mozart is cool, but Beethoven is too intense for modern tastes. And I can't imagine doing a movie about Bach - 20 kids?

bach used math o write down his symphonys am I right?
Rzulff666 4 years ago
Bach didn't write symphonies, they hadn't been invented yet. He wrote counterpoint, which is very mathematical when you analyse it but like all composers he put it together in his head as he was writing. He was known to improvise complex fugues - the set called The Musical Offering was mostly improvised for King Frederick the Great and written down afterwards.
gspaulsson 4 years ago
thanks.
My teacher said that Beethoven was more chaotic in composing.
Rzulff666 4 years ago
Beethoven was also a great improviser, so he could pour it out on demand. But he was also a perfectionist, who kept making corrections to his scores - that's why they look chaotic. But he kept meticulous notes, and you can see his ideas evolving in his notebooks. Also his work more complex, less formulaic and on a larger scale than anything that had gone before, so he was breaking new ground, groping his way forward. My 2c worth.
gspaulsson 4 years ago 3
No , because symphonies didn't existed when Bach was alive .
