To me this song is about a long-term relationship couple who broke up, and both people are experiencing the single life & are going in different directions in life.. from the male's p.o.v., he loves this new life too much to give it up for the person he used to be and for the girl he used to love. Then, out of the blue they meet up and he realizes what's truly important to him-- her. He loves her too much to go back to the person he was becoming..
The guy from baths is gay and very open about it. This song seems to be about meeting up with his lover, but under the cover of darkness so people won't know. The second verse takes place after they've left to a more accepting place, thus the change to past tense and the "I won't go back" repeated.
