Saw Burton about six months ago in Victoria. He hasn't changed a bit! His voice is so true and he always puts homself in the songs. I remember listening to him in the seventies and had his 8 tracks and records.

Burton Cummings, along with Gary Puckett had the greatest voice in rock music to me in the late 60s and early 70s. Dont know why he wasn't a bigger solo star.

If I ever hit the lottery where I had millions to spend, I would contact Burton and tell him that I wanted a private concert to be filmed. He would hire all the backround singers, orchestra and bank members that he needed. I would ask him to perform all his best songs the way that he did them on the albums....I would sit back and enjoy the best voice that God ever gifted this world with. I cannot say how much his music has meant to me over these last 25 years. He's been my hero since 1976.

He's been my hero since he released his first solo album when I was 16 years old. Now I'm 51 and love his music as much as ever. This was always my favorite song from him, my favorite song in life. Fantastic voice and fantastic piano playing. What a talent!!
I think it's a characteristically Canadian song too. A lot of us feel the need for spirituality inside ourselves, but never had the chance to explore it through any heritage. Burton's soulful singing confirms that religion is a useful tool, but that spirituality exists independently from any dogma.
What a beautiful song, my brother had this song on a 7 inch single about 30 yrs ago and at the the time I think I wore out the disk playing it so much, its so wonderful to hear it again.

When I first heard Burton after going solo form The Guess Who, I knew he was going to be a hit. It really surprised me when they called him a "One hit wonder". Anything he sang was beautiful. He had a magic voice (to me), and I miss not hearing him on a daily basis. Between this song & "Stand Tall", I'm not sure which is his best. . .I'd venture to guess Stand Tall. Seemed like a sad time in his life. This site is great for the oldies!!!
I know Randy Bachmam from the days of high school in Winnipeg and even though they have different life styles, Randy sill thinks that Burton has the best 'rock and roll' voice and style.

I saw Burton @ Harpos Theater in Detroit in 1987. I was 16 and was my first concert. I didnt even know who this man was before that night, That is still the best show I had ever seen.

About ten years ago, I was driving late one night from Saint John to Moncton. This song came on the radio, and it almost a religious experience. Sing it, Burt!
In videos yes they lip sync but on tv not all lip sync. Usually it's the people who are dancing full out who lip sync on tv. But I personally know people who have sung on t.v.& don't or know people who have been to live tapings who have seen people who don't.
I'm 45 and I heard this song first in the early 70's....had a alot of personal family stuff going on......this song, and Burton being a Canadian helped me through so much.............this song makes me happy and brings tears to my eyes.........thank you BC for writing a tune that allows me to remember somebody so special in my life.
I wouldn't care if he were lip-synching, I know the reasons for it... But I don't think this is lip-synched. It doesn't sound like the original track. Burton is just a very consistent vocalist... and I think that kind of thing always invites the lip-synching comments. People who sing as amazing as Burton does are able to re-create their studio vocals in a live setting without much effort.

I have a news flash for you when singers and bands make music videos they don't actually sing-- they all lip sync while performing for the camera; It's showmanship and part of being in the biz. Too many people make a big deal out of this and there is no reason.. as long as it's his music. Great song. I grew up listening to Burton. Although "I'm Scared" of his lip syncing (see 3:28) and faking the piano, I'll forgive him in the spirit of "religion"!
i was privledged enough to take some music and piano theory with a teacher named lillian irwin. She was burtons piano teacher when he was a kid and i rememebr she would tell me that was her "claim to fame" She was a very old lady and would tell me that she never liked the muscial path he took but that she loved his song i will play a rhapsody. She has passed on but to anyone who lives in the 'Peg and understands this she lived on Cathedral Avenue.

The 70s was also a decade of one hit wonders who created a magnificent wealth of material that blows away the music of any other decade hands down. Anyone with a critical, educated. discerning ear could vouch for that. NOTHING touches 70s music! Now 70s fashion? That's another story.

In videos yes they lip sync but on tv not all lip sync. Usually it's the people who are dancing full out who lip sync on tv. But I personally know people who have sung on t.v.& don't or know people who have been to live tapings who have seen people who don't.

I'm 45 and I heard this song first in the early 70's....had a alot of personal family stuff going on......this song, and Burton being a Canadian helped me through so much.............this song makes me happy and brings tears to my eyes.........thank you BC for writing a tune that allows me to remember somebody so special in my life.

I wouldn't care if he were lip-synching, I know the reasons for it... But I don't think this is lip-synched. It doesn't sound like the original track. Burton is just a very consistent vocalist... and I think that kind of thing always invites the lip-synching comments. People who sing as amazing as Burton does are able to re-create their studio vocals in a live setting without much effort.

Pffft it's taped for tv/video of course it's lip synced you moron!! I have a news flash for you when singers and bands make music videos they don't actually sing-- they all lip sync while performing for the camera; It's showmanship and part of being in the biz. Too many people make a big deal out of this and there is no reason.. as long as it's his music. He sings and plays amazing live unlike half of today's artists who rely on the studio to make them sound good. Jeez man! Hugh u suck!

Grew up with top 40 AM in 60s/70s, Burton still my favorite male vocalist of all time-for no other reason, just like the way the guy sings.

Great song. I grew up listening to Burton. Although "I'm Scared" of his lip syncing (see 3:28) and faking the piano, I'll forgive him in the spirit of "religion"!

i was privledged enough to take some music and piano theory with a teacher named lillian irwin. She was burtons piano teacher when he was a kid and i rememebr she would tell me that was her "claim to fame" She was a very old lady and would tell me that she never liked the muscial path he took but that she loved his song i will play a rhapsody. She has passed on but to anyone who lives in the 'Peg and understands this she lived on Cathedral Avenue.
