Oh my God I looooove this ending so much!! It's my favourite adaptation and I've seen nearly all! Toby Stephens as Rochester just got something about him, that certain something that actually makes you believe and understand why Jane fell for him...
And of course, he's hilarious, especially when he's jealous like in this scene!! Love it :D
The reason, I think, that Toby portrays the best Rochester is because he really shows all aspects of him...he's not just brooding, or dark, but he also has the humour and vivacity like Rochester does in the book.
I love this 2006 adaptation. I got it to myself for Mother's day, as a gift to me!!... I can watch it over & over. Toby Stephens makes the sexiest and sweetest Mr. Rochester!!
I finally have the WHOLE movie. I remember finding at Costco and SQUEALING! This little boy looked at me and then at his dad and said, "Daddy, why is that girl screaming?" I laughed and skipped away. :D I am a serious Jane Eyre fan! Thumbs up if you are!
@TheBluepencilabc - I did and loved it. It is totally different from this one, with all the respect for all actors alike. It is less communicative, less chatty, it expresses all the shades of emotions in the characters' restraint, it reveals bits and pieces of their inner struggle and force the viewer to take it all in and reconstruct it, be it emotion, gesture, idea. I am totally speechless, a nice surprise in a world of fiction that hands it all out without any urge to process.
yes, It was beautiful. The 2011 version tells the story more loosely; the scenes are not as long or detailed as the 2006 version. So instead of showing us how the chemistry between Jane and Mr Rochester turns into love, we feel there is a special, uncommon bond between them from the beginning that blooms and intensifies. Then we finally realise what that connection is through the common acts of affection they perform. For example, in the 2006 they say 'I love you' while in they 2011 they do not.
Ok, I have watched almost every version of the Jane Eyre movies/series. This one and the version with Timothy Dalton are the BEST ONES!!! Timothy Dalton & Toby Stephens are the only ones that cry, get passionately angry, & are SO FREAKING ROMANTIC!!!!!!!! I WILL ALWAYS LOVE THESE VERSIONS!!!
I have probably watched this 10 thousand times, and it never ceases to make me tear up. The loveliest version there is, with the most adoring portrayals.
I totally did NOT squeal and dance around like a little girl when they made up!! I didn't! :D Ok, I seriously did! The book was amazing, this movie was amazing...IT'S JUST AMAZING!
I burst out laughing when he gets jealous, the whole dialogue after he says "well why did he do that" is hilerious, just shows how much he still loves her
I agree...these actors show the true passion and nature of Jane and Rochester, in my opinion, far better than any of the previous films. Wilson and Stephens ooze passion out of every gesture, word and movement. The chemistry is undeniable. These are incredibly skilled actors. It's my favorite Jane Eyre film to date!! :-)
@kahlani ... Timothy was an AWESOME Rochester but I must agree with @silverarcher22... Toby Stephens is OUTSTANDING, and so deeply in furled into Rochester's make-up, that I do prefer him above any other....
Toby and Ruth Wilson... then Ciaran Hinds & Samantha Morton... But I do rate Zelah and Timothy's version too..
Actually ANY Jane eyre is good with me... I love 'em all.. :0)x
Perhaps I'm being picky but I much more liked the original dialouge, although this version remains the best and my favorite out of all the other adaptations
I love how everyone comments on Stephen's "good looks". I don't think him all that physically attractive at least not in the traditional sense, not like Timothy Dalton. Rather he's got a sexy broodiness that get's us ladies all riled up lol Perhaps that's just my way of convincing myself that he really was physically a good choice for Rochester. But really, the strength of this verison is the acting. They may not look exactly as described, but dman, they act every inch their charcaters...
I just adore the way Rochester acts like a insulted child...He is just so stubborn in a very wonderful way :) For me, this is the best adaption of Jane Eyre because they have put so much effort in displaying the characters' feelings.
The Rochester you are trying to think of is Ciaran Hinds, he played against Samantha Morton ... Also an excellent version... All 4 actors bring subtle differences to the characters... Brilliant acting and a fantastic book too ... :0)x
I just watched the 1983 version and the 2006 version. I love the book Ive read it over for years, I am 19 and wasn't even born when the first mentioned version was made but I much prefer it. Though this one is more passionate in some emtions I don't think it captures the story the way I know and love it like he 1983 version did for me. Its different for everyone :) And this is just how it is for me, some will prefer this version Im sure. As for me 1983 version is the best Ive seen :)
I agree i love the 83 version it captures more of the true story, however there are scenes in this version that I like but the one thing i wished is they do not mention that Edward gets his sight back
I don't mind them mentioning that, but he is supposed to be completely blind and only be able to see dim light... then gradually over years and years it slowly returns, though in this version he has both eyes 'but one eye was knocked out, and one had so crushed that Mr Carter, the surgeon had to amputate it directly.' Quote from the book. 'he eventually recovered the sight of that one eye'
@hils39 -- I always wondered about that image in the photo frame! I always figured it was some sort of inside joke or a tribute, either maybe someone connected to the movie that they were paying tribute to, or else it was someone in the movie business who thought so much of himself that he had to put his own image in there. I would love to know the story is behind that...
I love Jane Eyre as well, and even though they probably should have uglied Toby up a little more for after the fire, I dont care, I loved it the best out of all the Jane Eyres I've seen not too mention I liked this Jane a lot more. She had more humor and witt.
They tried to make the ending into a Jane Austen novel! I prefer the book and the 1983 version of Jane Eyre. Rochester never wanted a platonic relationship with Jane, he wanted her to be his mistress and he does anything he can to get her. That's what drives the story from his perspective.
For me, it's not that someone looks the part perfectly. It's how they portray the character. So yes, Toby Stephens is extremely good looking, but his performance is Rochester. he captures all the nuances beautifully. There's so much depth to Rochester, it isn't one dimensional. That's why in my opinion he's so amazing. So I don't care if he doesn't look the part, or things aren't exactly the way in the book. The emotion, the passion, the depth is all there.
@silverarcher22 I completely agree - his good looks are a very serious bonus, but he also just captures the whole surly and sarcastic and quick-tempered but funny bit much more (in my opinion) than any other Rochesters I've seen.
@silverarcher22 you're totally right. And Ruth is also very beautiful but when I saw her as Jane, I SAW her as "plain, poor, obscure, and little". That's what good acting is. Of course they have to look pretty or nobody will watch because the average viewer is shallow (like me!), but they played the roles amazingly.
That movie, "Closer" with Clive Owen has his character as a "unattractive, below average" type. Clive is gorgeous but he comes off as "ugly". That's good acting.
I totally agree! But Toby is still like REALLY GOOD... but I guess it's because I saw Timothy Dalton first after I read the book, and I think he looks more like Rochestor than Toby does... but hey, this adaptation is still pretty good.
just finished the book, lol, thought it was great. I'd really like to see a modern version of this, like Pride & Prejudice was made into... that would be cool
I love this version but I don't understand why they change things. Why is Rivers going to Africa instead of India? And why does Rochester still have his hand? Not to mention the script! Lucky the chemistry is so great between Jane and Rochester.
Yeah in the end he did get some eyesight back, in time to see his first born son who looks like just like him. Maybe they ran out of time in this version to explain all that stuff and decided to leave him blind! I guess the most important part of the end is that he is happy with Jane

how "2006" is this scene indeed.
It's actually striking and dissapointing after seeing the 1983 version that it's so similar to the book-the dialogs and also the actors's performances.
I said the same thing when i first watched this version. But after seeing it all I became convinced that this was my favorite version. But I do wish that they would have made the script like the book so I could see Toby Stephens be more poetic. He's already the best Rochester...a great script would have made him heavenly.
I agree, dtunlimiteda. If Ruth and Toby had the 1983 script, I think this version could have had the potential to be perfect. They have exactly the relationship that I imagined for Jane and Rochester, even if the script is lacking quite a bit.
in the programe they decided to leve him blind because it would have been confussing if the last scean he has his sight bk. But in the book he does get it bk
Rochester is supposed to have lost his left hand and left eye (his left eye popped out when the building fell on him). He also burned his right eye. So is he blind? Sorry, I didn't watch the whole BBC version.
i'd say he would be bild or at least temporarily blind in his right eye. the BBC version didn't do it like that...just bits of visible scaring and he is blind (this is 2006 version).

well, i guess that the movie didn't specify that he DIDN'T regain his sight, so we can be left to speculate

Rochester is supposed to have lost his left hand and left eye (his left eye popped out when the building fell on him). He also burned his right eye. So is he blind? Sorry, I didn't watch the whole BBC version.
birmingham1010 3 years ago
i'd say he would be bild or at least temporarily blind in his right eye. the BBC version didn't do it like that...just bits of visible scaring and he is blind (this is 2006 version).
