Hey Blunty, I made a video with some of your tips, and I was wondering if you can look at my video, and tell me the few problems I have with the video.
Your quick speed with talking makes me happy. Why? Because finally I find someone that beats ME in that. Ahh I feel like I've found a kindred spirit! And I would totally love to get one of these bloggies for my upcoming birthday (I'm going to ask for one! lol ...not likely to get it. *cough*) because I've always wanted to start a vlog setup.
Great videos for beginners and if I get my hands on a camera, I will come back to review the tips again!
@JaKeTVXD For mac computers in my opnion is Imovie 09. Im not into pc but i believe for PC's you can go for windows movie maker. Like Blunt said, for vlogging you dont need anything too fancy.
I often stop for like 30 sec. to think in my vlogs so just to cut them out, windows movie maker works just fine, im only just starting out so i suppose i don't have to be 100% perfect YET!
My advice is to carry around a piece of paper to set the white balance on a camera. I figured it out after a wildlife photography session where the white balance was all messed up and I didn't have anything white nearby to set the white balance to.
Yup i get better an better the more i do it, sometimes its hard to do because theres just nothing to vlog about sometimes, nothing to film, i dont like to film just my face, i like to get out there but its hard where im at.
Blunty, I have tried and failed to be a successful youtuber. I was wondering if you had any thoughts on what to do when money is tight, and your computer sucks? Also how do you create vlogs that aren't boring and crappy? How do you find GOOD TOPICS TO TALK ABOUT???!!!???!!!???!
you may have gotten this question before, but money is tight and im looking for a good cheap editing software would you know anygood ones i can look into?
Hey Blunty, I've been following you and your videos since those early days in 2006. Today I'd like to buy a new camera. The Bloggie sounds like a very good option to me, because of it's portability and ease of use, but here on Chile, it's too overpriced! It's like $350, when it should be about $150! With that amount of money I could buy a digital still camera with HD capabilities, but I would lose a lot of portability, and 1080p recording. Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks.
Should I feel embarresed about telling people I vlog or want to start vlogging? Should expect friends to have cynacil reactions? I'm not sayng I think making vlogs is wierd myself, but alot of people will find it strange.
Question: Do you think too many jumpcuts with a differently positioned speaker cause distraction from the topic at hand and thus cause viewers to lose attention and perhaps close the video?
i have had some trouble filming and lettng the sound stay pure. there's wind attacking me, there's wierd echoes in the room, i keep saying the word freakin' too much and could you answer these little questions
*do you hold the camera at a certain weird angle to avoid wind?
*Is there a point in using the awesome tiny mic hidden on the shirt?
*How can you avoid sayin words like: that, F**kin(maybe only a rant issue), lol etc?
dude you rock and on the hate america thing im american and its your opinion and thats all that matters so dont worry about what those no lifes have to say make a shout out video to me please
Okay Blunty, so here's my question. What's your favourite thing about blogging? Everyone I'm sure is asking how to improve their vlogs, and I did the same in the first How to video comment section, but now it's time to ask YOU. So tell all of us, why do you love vlogging so much and what got you started? :) Take care!
As a guy kinda new to bling and only using an iphone as i am far to poor and jobless to afford a HD cam.
When i take video weather it be from my phone outside or with my isight i always get a hideous flare from my glasses lenses, any idea of how i would get rid of this. Obviously without taking them off. Also i often fear when out and about filming in more public places mainly because i don't know if i am aloud. Taking video of people, licences plates etc. Any ideas on this?
Does showing yourself talking in a vlog video make it better than if you just show what your talking about in the video?
For example do you think a video would be better if i filmed myself talking about the subject and maybe have the subject in the background or just filmed the subject of the video and nothing else?
thanks for all the tips and tricks loved the macgeiver trick.
Sorry to ask another question but i forgot to ask it before =P have you used the 360 degree video lens adapter for the bloggie and if you have can we see some footage?
Just wonndering Blunty have you seen the built in fades on the Canon Legria HFM306? Pretty cool and an awesome camcorder! Was messing around with one today and wish i had one!
Blunty3000 i am a fan of you since i saw your video of "Are you a crappy person" and i wonder Do you speak another language other than than English? i know it sound off topic sorry English is my second language
plus I added to it If you are using artificial lighting what is the best type to use, and where should the lights be in relation to the camera and face, and if there is a cheap option, what's the best way to achieve it but still get a professional look to it. or is it better to use natural.
What's the best way to get rid of a grainy sound, when you can't use a mic with camera. and if I talk louder it gets worse or is it a case I need a new cam
Well i started making videos awhile ago n then my camra broke lol. Any way i relise now i was goin at it all wrong n i dont mean with the editing n that i ment with the content and everthing to do with it, i wanted 2 start a blog and did so but now i relise i had nothing to talk about that was well anythin good or intresting. So if i ever get my hands on a new camra i think ill have a much better idea of what to do when it comes to bloging or what have you. So thank blunty, Catch ya next time!
So my new question to you is, what about the quality. I used to upload videos on my current channel in HD and it took upwards of 2 hours. If I'm on the go and I need a quick upload, what is the best solution without compromising quality too much?
Ahhh, well now I feel stupid for asking the same question twice before actually seeing the next part!
Well thanks for helping out an aspiring vlogger. I for one am very satisfied with the tips you provided and will hopefully be shipping off my life to youtube in hopes of gathering a following of sorts.
Looking forward to the final part, I've been wondering about lighting, myself, because a lot of vloggers and such don't really talk about the behind the camera stuff.
Question: As a new vlogger on YouTube, does it really matter if the vlog is shot in High Definition or Standard Defenition, and is it preferable to have your Vlogs filmed in 16:9 Widescreen?
how much time should i spend on a video, i work and go to school and i find hard to creates video becuase of filming then editing then uploading, how much time do you spend on videos?
I've noticed that a lot of vloggers use music overlays in their videos. not all, but some. Do you think it is detrimental to the topic of the video to have a bunch of backround noise?
Question 1 : How can you vlog on a low budget? Being 16 years old and all. I currently only use my webcam to put content on Youtube, but that limits me to making like , a vid every couple of months because I don't like people around when I vlog, since English isn't my native language.
Question 2 : How do you get in touch with other beginner youtubers so that you can make collaborations and help each other out? I'm sure it'd be alot easier if you had someone that is in the same situation as you.
What are some of the best places to get royalty free media (i.e. Music, Video, Photos)? I know there is TONS of media on the internet, but how do you know if you can use something legally?
If you steal certain aspects from other people, should you give them a message of thanks of some sort? Or just tell them to suck it and enjoy your new found information?
hello, have been trying to do green screen work lately and have been having bleed over problems with showing minor pixlations in certain spots, any ideas how to perfect it?
my Question: How do you find such superb locations {public Places} without actually public people around you watching what you do? making you feel........
What's your opinion on the "Rule of Thirds" cause my Digital media teacher always rant on and on about it, but my art teacher says there more like guidelines, rather actual rules, point being, is it necessary to apply that rule at all in these types of videos?
@TheBurtmeister They are important to learn, and tech yourself to use, and "see" when you're framing up, but they are merely rules, not universal laws... rules can be bent or broken for purpose.
@Blunty3000 It also does help to not only vlog about something you think people will watch, but more importantly do something you would like to talk about. If you are vlogging about something you don't care about, it will end up being boring and flat having to force out words you have no feeling for.
Blunty - Thanks for continuing this series - I know that you are an artist, but there are times when it's also about your fans (or the business). How do you balance between the two; attracting and keeping viewers, and getting your message (whatever that may be) out?
Question: is it better to vlog in a casual settings (such as a kitchen, living, etc.), or do things similar to some of your vlogs where you have either a blank background/greenscreen editted background?
When I start vlogging my intro will be 2 minutes long because I totally was paying attention to what you were saying. Oh I'll also use a whole bunch of jump cuts for no reason. Because I R so smart.
im familiar with both new and old way of editing and with the only way we actually avoid using transitions. straight cuts are more preferred because transitions distract. If you watch movies in the theaters you will usually see a total of 3 to 4 fades/transitions. but still this is a great tutorial. cant wait for the last one!
Blunty; starting out where you all that concerned with how many people where watching your videos? Any vlogger is doing it for the attention to some extent - so is it fustrationg putting work in to quality videos that get small amounts of views and feedback?
hey Nate, got a question for ya. in the beginning of this video you were far away from your camera and you were getting great audio, what mic were you using, the mic on the camera, a wireless lapel mic, or a shotgun mic? i have had so many video ideas ruined because of poor audio picked up by my camcorder...
What format should videos be saved in? Or, should I say what format is recommended for general purposes? My camera can save in either mpeg and mpeg-4.
What are the best camera settings for the time of day when you're shooting? How do I use the settings like exposure, focus, and white balance to make my video look best when I'm filming?
I totally agree hahah :P You don't put a "old camera effect" unless it's maybe a flashback or something that has to do with old times :D But my question is about the widescreen. I've been having troubles with it because it comes out most of the time with the black boxes... and yes its widescreen when in 720 or 1080p but then its way to big for a simple 40 second video :P Okay.... theres my question and I hoope I can get one of those cameras :D (in the non begging way) :P
Hey Blunty! My question as to do with music and copyright etc... What are the do's and don't for this aspect or should you be even using it at all. I know there are some music and sounds that are free use but is it really needed and what can/should you do with it?
Blunty3000 I have a question about the content you and other vloggers use. The Music Movies Photo's etc, how do you gain permission or otherwise "get away" with using content produced by other people or companies? Thanks -Matt
When it comes to the audio portion of the recording, how would you get the most out of just your camera if all you're using at the time is a digital camera not really meant for videos. Might be a stupid question but any tips to avoid wind/background noise, distance from camera to speaker and anything else would helpy myself and tons of others I'm sure.
QUESTION: So Blunty I know that you are a big fan of sound over the kind of camera or quality you present. I want to know your view on cameras. I know even when you started with the animations you did when they were presented on YouTube with all the film grain and distortion it still was presented in a nice and snappy way of audio, but now that you have moved up in th genre of cameras what do you think now of this now? Also I know you use a separate mic, is that necessary and how does that work?
@spaceman300 Depends what is being shot. The night/low light shots in this video were shot with no additional lighting, all I had was whatever light was in the environment.
@Blunty3000 i remember subscribing to you when you had about 8 videos and it was right before you put up the "mountain jew" video. youve come so far blunty!!!! your hairs getting grey now too D:
40 second intros are a pain, but a snappy 1-3 second catchy intro could be good. Sometimes I get a little jingle stuck in my head from a youtuber with a short snappy intro, and it makes me want to go back and watch a few of their videos.
my question is about music, should you play music in the video while you're vlogging or not would it be to distracting? or how do you know what type of music you should use that can fit the mood of the video
my question is Is there a Future in vblogging like if you do it sucessful enough and get people veiwing will you be able to do videos like this for veiwers where massive companys like sony offer you things to give away and bassically become recognised for vblogging around the world
That was the best thus far, and i cant wait for episode 5.
My maybe overstated question is. When doing reviews and such, do you think its better to have yourself in the video, or to just do a voice-over and have the camera focused on the product?
Are integrated web cams a good device for recording vlogs? Or how about the camera on the newer iPod Nano? I've done vids with both and the only one that didn't have audio lag was the iPod recording. Its A little irritating..
Iv been using more than one because one has better text options and using another for other features. so far i have TotalMedia extreme, sony vegas, and windows live movie maker. Windows live movie maker is probably easiest to use so far.
My questions are. What is the best software to use? and when your using images inside your videos. e.g for an animiated videos like an AMV how do i add or overlay (technial name?) people inside the video and special effects to correspond for the music (like piano notes) and to make it flow smoothly.
what is your take on "driving" vlogs? We see it in TV and in YT videos. There are people who like to talk while driving a car and they have a camera fixed on them. Do you think that's a good idea?
Sorry, I have no real question. I just want to say thank you for this very helpfull guide(s). I especially liked the "tools don't make an artist..." thingy! I am looking forward for part 5
Here is my question, or rather questions: Is it considered distracting to present yourself at an angle or to vlog in a public arena? Do you consider the atmosphere in which your vlog is made to be vitally important to the video? Thanks!!
Exactly... i love users like you and sxephil that cut parts out of there clip and keeps the talking continuous gets down to the point and doesn't waste a bit of time. =)
Hi Blunty: I'm a Chinese international student in Melbourne, I want to make video blogs talk about life in Australia, however, the only thing I have is the passion, I have several questions, but first and foremost, I want to know, what drive you to make so many videos? To be honest, is this your job or more like a hobby or a bit of both, because I am not sure if my passion can drive me very far.
I could really use a newer camera. Appreciate the tips. Reassureing to those who only have windows movie maker that they can make good content with the tools they have.

If you are vlogging about something you don't care about, it will end up being boring and flat having to force out words you have no feeling for.

@refreakasoid I'm not sure why you're repeating the sentiment I communicated in the previews episode of this series in a comment here.
Blunty3000 1 year ago
@Blunty3000 I was repeating it because...it was a good point? Suckupish much? hardly!
Never hurts for a little bit of repetition...that and I had forgotten what the last video was about. Busy schedule Nate!

If your intro is only like 2 seconds long, would that be okay?

@iGotBurnt What's this WE thing?
rickki1 1 year ago
im familiar with both new and old way of editing and with the only way we actually avoid using transitions. straight cuts are more preferred because transitions distract.

06lockharta 1 year ago
hey Nate, got a question for ya. in the beginning of this video you were far away from your camera and you were getting great audio, what mic were you using, the mic on the camera, a wireless lapel mic, or a shotgun mic? i have had so many video ideas ruined because of poor audio picked up by my camcorder...
celldweller1982 1 year ago
@celldweller1982 I was running the demo Bloggie camera I had in my hand, pulled the audio from that.

What are the best camera settings for the time of day when you're shooting? How do I use the settings like exposure, focus, and white balance to make my video look best when I'm filming?
TBarrett12 1 year ago

WG587 1 year ago
QUESTION: So Blunty I know that you are a big fan of sound over the kind of camera or quality you present. I want to know your view on cameras. I know even when you started with the animations you did when they were presented on YouTube with all the film grain and distortion it still was presented in a nice and snappy way of audio, but now that you have moved up in th genre of cameras what do you think now of this now? Also I know you use a separate mic, is that necessary and how does that work?

With your two videos shown we saw gentle and then energetic is it possible to get it between the two or would it be too dry?

40 second intros are a pain, but a snappy 1-3 second catchy intro could be good. Sometimes I get a little jingle stuck in my head from a youtuber with a short snappy intro, and it makes me want to go back and watch a few of their videos.

my question is Is there a Future in vblogging like if you do it sucessful enough and get people veiwing will you be able to do videos like this for veiwers where massive companys like sony offer you things to give away and bassically become recognised for vblogging around the world
Danyol4 1 year ago
Uhm what the? There's sure people gotten more ''famous'' on youtube by vlogging but I don't think it'll get that famous ghe.

But that's not vlogging that's reviews, previews and commercial stuff that's a bit different but yeah I guess you're right in a way :P
Rickynator120 1 year ago

Hello.
I got the question about the Sony Bloggie.
How is it to turn the camera forward and back to your face?
Is it better to just turn around the camera with your face?

Hi Blunty: I'm a Chinese international student in Melbourne, I want to make video blogs talk about life in Australia, however, the only thing I have is the passion, I have several questions, but first and foremost, I want to know, what drive you to make so many videos? To be honest, is this your job or more like a hobby or a bit of both, because I am not sure if my passion can drive me very far.
