@martyb0y1690 Unfortunatly the method you described wouldn't have worked properly due to the design of the filter. Cloudy water wasn't from a bacterial bloom, I should of said the water had a lot of unsettled fine particles that were just being recirculated, most likely from the sand. Thanks for watching!
@twain088 well that method has been working fine for me for a few years now aloso you should clean the filter more than once a month and put some more bio balls and maybe add some carbon
I have a fluval 205 and I found by having a turtle I found a few improvements that can be done one of which you showed another was changing the pipes to the clear pvc type and making a custom insert to evenly distribute the water.
hi J, during a one month period I'll usually perform 3-4 waterchanges (about once a week) of 20%. A hang on back filter should be fine to keep up with your tank, so long as you choose one that is rated for a larger tank. Meaning for your 45 gallon, you will need a filter rated for 110 - 160 gallons depending on what type of fish you wish to keep. hope this helps.
No worries bud, In all honesty I don't bother buying filter pads from the LFS anymore. I goto my local Bunnings (Home Depot for you) and buy floor scrubbers (not sponges) at 1/2 the price for the same size. In my opinion they work just as well if not better and look exactly the same as the ones in this video. Just make sure they are pads only and don't come with any cleaning product. I'll post a video showing you what I mean by "floor scrubbers" in a later video. peace.
fast comeback. that's good to here i just won one off ebay for 60 buck 10 shipping am going to use it on my 75 gallon reef tank any tips where can get some filter pads from .. i'll let you know if this works good

That filter design is awful. Do yourself a favour and buy a Rena Filstar.

@buddhasknowbest Why? While Rena's are good too, this works fine for me.

you should have just bought the fine polishing filter for 1 side of the filter and kept the standard corse filter on the other
and you probably had cloudy water from a bacteria bloom and just happened to go away about the same time as you done this
