The barrel is only tilted when the slide is back. After every shot when the slide return forward the barrel is flatten out. the movement of the barrel is controlled by energy of the shot and parts inside the slide. The barrel doesnt only tilt but it moves backwards a little too
The barrel is locked to the slide, to prevent gases escaping from the rear of the barrel, because we want to have full energy to push the bullet. After bullet leaves, barrel unlocks and it does't matters if barrel tilts upwards or not. Some other pistols, like russian makarov (PM) has no barrel lock and loses some power, because some gasses escapes from the rear of the barrel, before bullet leaves it. (sorry for my english, it's not my native language).
I get asked this all the time. I always thought common sense but if people don't know guns I can see how it may look funny. Instead of explaining again and again I will just have them check out your short and sweet video here... Thanks for another great vid, I love your videos by the way, please keep them coming.
@dullbrass actually when you close the chamber the barrel boes back into place and straitens out again. but the bullet still travels slightly upward due to the high powered trajectory. and no, im not a nerd, I just know a lot about guns and bullets.
barrel only tilts upward when the slide is going back, in order to unlock the pistol. on a Glock or XDm or Ruger or any similar semi-auto pistol, do your field strip & notice that when you take the slide off, the barrel is full forward and PARALLEL to the slide. to get the barrel out, note the little cam block; this is what tilts it during operations. reassemble.
with slide on receiver and locked at the back, that cam is what lifts the barrel to an "angle"
I think if you were appointed "National Firearm Educator" tasked with providing frank and non-political information about firearms, their design and operation, responsible ownership, and safe use a great many problems could be solved.
@vpsaline alot of people would think that bat acually i does NOT affect the accuracy if you will watch a video of ANY semi or full automatic pistol firing in very slow motion the round is out of the barrel before the slide starts to move
@vpsaline no, the barrel fits into the slide perfectly. and the slide of course has the sights on it. As long as the slide is completely forward then the barrel is locked into place and so it retains its accuracy.
Great design really. almost every gun manufacturer uses this design.
the exceptions are like the walther ppks and similar pisols, the beretta pistols (excluding the px4 series), the 1911, and most .22 caliber handguns. those have fixed barrel designs.
@qubach The bullet has already left the barrel before the unlocking takes place. So no the bullet will not be effected. Hickok forgot to mention that the barrel tilts to unlock from the slide AS WELL as make the round chamber easier. :)
@qubach You are correct, the projectile will be fired upwards...but ALL bullets fired from all guns are fired "upwards" as they exit the gun.
If your target is 40 meters away for example; and you have your sights set to zero in at 40 meters, then when you aim, your barrel will be ever so slightly pointed up and above that point in relation to your sights. The bullet exits the gun on an upwards angle. Gravity then takes over and pull the bullet downwards...
I thought they tilted to unlock the barrel from the slide. I am pretty sure thats the reason and if one of the effects of that is making feeding easier then its a win win. I have found a properly throated 1911 will feed most types of round with no problems. Every gun has its strong points. Good video hickok45. I actually thought you were going to go gangster and hold the gun sideways to shoot the bottle.
Question. I owned a Glock 21 and I noticed that the barrel tilted up. but does it go down when you release the slide? I never looked into that before I sold it. I have a Bushmaster M4A1 XM-15 E2S now.
Unfortunatly some people are not going to understand that when the slide goes foward it locks the barrel back into place, and when it goes back to pick up another round it tilts up.Your going to get a bunch of questions now about how come the bullet does not go up if the barrel is pointed up.lol.too funny.
Because glocks do not have fixed barrels like the super duper accurate hi point sniper pistols that vasili zeitseff used to pwn nazi invaders in stalingrad.
Wow, I am rather surprised that people thought there was seriously something wrong with the guns when the barrel was pointing upward on slide lock-back. LOL
Are you sure? I was told they tilt up to make the gun better for shooting from the hip! (not really)
I mistakenly thought this vid was going to address "why you should tilt the gun at a diagonal for one handed shooting." I've never really gotten a good explanation for that, and I don't experience any particular advantage.
I figured i might as well ask. when ever i shoot my glock 17 it is way to easy to chamber the round without sliding the slide with my off hand. is this ok or is something too loose?
@spetsnaz103 Maybe the spring is getting worn or it has a lighter spring in it. If it concerns you purchase a new spring or take it to your local shop and have it looked at. It probally won't cost you much if anything to have them look at it.
The barrel tilts down at the rear to unlock the pistol, not to better align the barrel for feeding. On the earliest Colts, the entire barrel tilted on two links, one at the front and one at the rear. The rear-only tilt was considered an improvement. As evidence that it's not for 'better' feeding, look at the Beretta 92 and H&K P7, both of which have barrels that do not tilt and neither of which has feeding problems as a result.
@RyeOnHam why would a angled piece of metal or wood be called a "ramp" ? because its angled up! and it makes it easier for us humans to traverse from a lower level to a upper level. the Barrel tilts to be more inline with the ramp. hey! you know what? I bet it would work for a cartridge's trip from the mag to the chamber! WOW! I better call Glock right away and let 'em know this great idea I came up with!
@zakkwylde81276 When the slide goes forward the barrel is forced back in to alignment by the breach face .Then locked in to place by lugs "colt 1911" The glock has a different type of lock to the colt 1911 . It locks in to the ejection opening on the slide .Its not a lock as such its just ment to keep everything straight while the gun is loaded for firing .Look on youtube for how guns work in cgi .It shows you the internals and what goes on during firing .
The barrel tilt does not affect the accuracy of the gun. The bullet leaves the barrel before the slide comes back and tilts the barrel. There are some good slow motion Glock ( and other handguns ) videos that show this.
id love to see a nice review of the browning hi power V the 1911 i know its covered all over the place but id like to see your point of view on it (im a hi power fan love the 9mm can find it everywhere you go in the world)

Lets see.. my M9 FC free floats... my 9000s tilts up... and my FireStar free floats... I'd say its an improvement who's day has come. Times change. Change with them or don't complain.
Dang, in the 1st page of comments i saw 3 comments removed, i didnt know that people could get so worked up over a youtube video.
How else could you take this video? I mean, its rather straightforward, explaining the reason the barrel tilts back, and rounds slide easier. Im assuming Hickok is a rather straightforward guy who wouldnt put in 980329423 subliminal messages to try to turn everybody into a mindless socialist zombie
... did i say that? Oh deary, someone could get "offended"
the 1911 tilts too...just not to the same degree...glocks,xd's m&P's sigs etc use a simpler system AND have a feed ramp on the barrel where some 1911 designs don't,,,it also eliminates the barrel lug from the 1911 design
Almost all of the Polymer pistols tilt the barrel as part of the action. It also allows the gun maker to also reduce the number of parts to the pistol dramatically
Thanks for that explanation. For me it really is useful information. I haven't shot a gun in more than 35 years, and that was a S&W model 19. I have been thinking of getting into shooting again and perhaps buying one of those "new fangled" Glocks. If I do, I won't be worrying that something is wrong with it.
And when the slide close and locks the barrel is straight then.Or people will think the barrel stays tilted all the time.[Hope I'm right or there's something wrong with my glock]
@CJUS511TAC, They are generally not really asking for a John Browning history lesson; they just think there's something wrong with it, or think it looks very odd.
@hickok45 hey hickok....love your vidoe's, the best on youtube by far. I now own two glocks, because of your video's...g19 and a g26.....love'em....Is it worth the money to put on night sights....if so what would you recomend

I think just as hickok45 said that most modern semi auto pistols all barrels tilt.

Lets see.. my M9 FC free floats... my 9000s tilts up... and my FireStar free floats...

The " oh hi!" is always my favorite part. And the end " and that's all I have to say about that" .

I'm surprised they couldn't work it out for themselves!

Search engines are your friend: Glock animation, 1911 animation, etc.

Could you do a video on the walther p38, the luger, or possibly the nagant revolver?
Thank you for your consideration.
piecrust21 3 months ago
the 1911 tilts too...just not to the same degree...glocks,xd's m&P's sigs etc use a simpler system AND have a feed ramp on the barrel where some 1911 designs don't,,,it also eliminates the barrel lug from the 1911 design
brotherscoobs 3 months ago
You should have told them it broke cuz your Glock is made out of plastic!

the outrageous tilt on a glock is an obvious design flaw, that damages accuracy.
Just kidding.

I can pick one up in my south australian town for about $200

to tilt or not to not to tilt that is the question!?
filmcostar 3 months ago
Almost all of the Polymer pistols tilt the barrel as part of the action. It also allows the gun maker to also reduce the number of parts to the pistol dramatically
vector6977 3 months ago
Yep !
jedimajic 3 months ago
even airsoft versions of pistols will have the tilted barrel.

mr hickok45 i just love your xdm pistol i cant get them here in california because of gun laws yes i know it suck here.

And when the slide close and locks the barrel is straight then.Or people will think the barrel stays tilted all the time.[Hope I'm right or there's something wrong with my glock]
profsat5 3 months ago
What are you talking about? I use the barrel link off my 1911 for a logging chain all the time!
a9white 3 months ago
The truth is that Mr. Hickok45 has worn all of his barrels out carrying in the top-secret +2 configuration that he learned from Gaston himself! ;^{P>

Great videos and good job dealing with the comments.

@CJUS511TAC, They are generally not really asking for a John Browning history lesson; they just think there's something wrong with it, or think it looks very odd.
