I didn't mind PoP's combat too much, but what kills it for me is the need to run back and forward over every inch of each area, and the huge amount of time you have to press buttons. It doesn't matter when you push a button as long as its in the massive time frame. Jump early, jump late, the Prince will just home in on the pillar or ledge. It's even more obvious on the little handles.

I'm not sure about Resistance 2 being better than the first. There's just so much difference... The first was gritty, the second is pretty. I miss the old color scheme.

The gameplay for me is also a bit different...
