Man what is really scary is how huge young American women are these days. I was recently browsing through various different banquet group photos of only women for a project and one of things that struck me was how many women between 25 and 35 are morbidly obese. I'm not making a judgment, just an observation. This, my friends is not a genetic problem. It all boils down to what we are putting in our mouths on a daily basis.
I never gained the weight. I lost it. Rapid weight loss with increasingly debilitating muscles. I'm Cushing's free 5+yrs later, but I can't run, lift or be as active as I want anymore.
This is Kate from the video. I do not have a recurrence and remain Cushing's-free. I am down 120 lbs and doing moderately well. It has been a terrible battle, but five years later, I have beat this disease with the help of many friends (especially Robin, who posted this video) and Dr. Friedman, who is my hero!
I had Cushings Disease 12 years ago. I am a mere 4'10" and on the day of surgery I weighed 197 in April by November I was 82 lbs. It was really a world wind of excitiement to have a diagnosis and be able to get back small. Now, I am 170 lbs and gaining, I am scared that Cushing's is back. I have had so many surgeries since that surgery, and now I am also having seizures. I can't find an Endo. Dr to find out what is wrong again. I am exhausted and need help to get well again. Any suggestions?
@terrenlovesyubabii I wanted to also share with you there is a great place for help, but I can't post the link here. If you will google "Cushing's Help", you will find a website with message boards. Join the message boards and we can help you there. Hugs.
Hi doctor - my sister was on high doses of prednisolone in her teen years (lupus) and she then had to have a kidney transplant. She has now been on tacrolimus and mycophanalate for several years and has all the symptoms of cushing, including pain around the middle and lower part of the brain. My question is: Can tacrolimus and mycophanalate cause cushing, or stop it from healing? Do those drugs affect hormonal function? Very grateful for a prompt response... thank you!!
@kittenbombon Dr. Friedman doesn't post here. However, I wanted to also share with you there is a great place for help, but I can't post the link here. If you will google "Cushing's Help", you will find a website with message boards. Join the message boards and we can help you there. Hugs.
LMAO I think it's funny how my comment gets flagged but it isn't the "mean" one but the one saying that the nice lady in the video didn't ask for a tumor. Wow...what f**king morons! And FYI Flag the dumb b*tch that wrote the negative comments about people with cushing's you stupid f**ks! Unless the ones that flagged are just as insensitive and inhuman as simple minded child that wrote the negative comment in the first place! umm...DUH!!! And good luck to the wonderful woman in the video
@SpazChat actual professional (as I know you are not one)! Also...don't go posting your ignorant comments on people's pages...people that are suffering and just quite frankly don't have time to put up with the ignorance that spills from your mouth! You are closeminded and the fact that you would write a comment like that tells me that you have the mind of a child! FYI..Karma is a b*tch!!! I hate having cushing's and I d*mn sure didn't ask for it or make up the tumor as I'm sure this nice
@SpazChat the name spaz fits you perfectly! you are most definitely uneducated! Cushing's is a real disease and it blows my mind how people can be so narrowminded and insensitive! What if this was someone in your family that had this??? Would you still be such a pain in the a**? Here is my advice to you, hun...go and pick up a medical book (and yes cushing's is in the medical books that actual doctors have while they attend school because it is an actual disease), go online, or ask an
I am a Cushing's Disease survivor. Blessings to all of you out there who are survivors or are still battling this terrible disease. Try not to take the negative postings seriously. If our doctors misdiagnosed or missed this disease, how can we expect the layman to understand? Please, anyone who suspects they may have Cushing's - find yourself an experienced endocrinologist specializing in pituitary and adrenal disorders.
Puhleeez. Give me a break! Then how do you explain the fact Italy and France don't have many obese people in their countries? Don't be fooled people. It's due to lack of regular exercise and the way they've tainted the USA food supply. Processed food is poisonous food
@SpazChat Sorry, SpazChat, but this is a real, terrible disease which I had. I was lucky and was diagnosed early. I was not obese, but I had a fat, round face and the buffalo hump (a fatty deposit on the back of the neck). I had a pituitary tumor that was removed and the fat went away on its own. There are so many terrible symptoms in addition to weight gain. Please educate yourself before passing judgment on others.
@SpazChat I must mention, that if you did NOT hear it properly in the video, Cushing's is pretty rare. So, until you have your doctorate in endocrinology, please refrain from voicing stupidity.
hi, my name is J, and my doctors think i have cushings. If so, i've had it since i was around 8 and i am now 13. I've never been extreamly active but in 4th grade, i was changing from a size small to a medium. now i am going to a size 20 in pants and size xl/ xxl with tops. I have been limited to low fat food and low cal. but nothing helps! I excersise every day and with all of those changes, i've gone up 36 ilbs in the last 6 months and have lost no weight.
That'd be aweful to have. Especially after having such an active childhood.
Nearly worse than cancer, while everyone can generally tell you have cancer or some sort of illness, and can be compassionate about it, Cushing...people just think your a lazy fat fuck, and doctors would just blow you off and you could never be cured.
@funtimeslaugh No. High cortisol at the wrong time of the day (reversed diurnal pattern) causes Cushing's disease. The high cortisol is usually caused by a tumor on the pituitary gland or on the adrenal glands. Sometimes there are also tumors in other parts of the body called ectopic tumors. Some folks do get it by taking too many corticosteroids (hydrocortisone, prednisone, dexamethasone, etc.) but that can be reversed just by stopping the corticosteroids under a doctors supervision.
@funtimeslaugh no - you get this disease when your body overproduces the hormones that it secretes normally in times of stress. There are many causes for the overproduction, but I don't think stress is one of them at this level....though of course constant stress is not good either.

@SlumberCloud This is Kate from the video. This condition is not rare so much as rarely diagnosed. I take great issue with your comment that "not everyone can blame their obesity on that." That implies that we who are cursed to have this BRAIN TUMOR want to explain away obesity which is not within our control. I was a runner when I got this tumor- watch the video again. And yes, we should all be so fortunate to have an NIH-trained MD PhD who is a world-reknowned expert as Dr. Theodore Friedman.

@SlumberCloud True, not everyone can blame their obesity on that. But some can. This disease is not rare, it is just rarely diagnosed. And you'd be very lucky to have this particular doctor if you had Cushing's. He is amazing.
Those who are saying that these people are to blame for their weight gain... I challenge any of you physically :) My Navy SEAL PST numbers: 7:33 500m combat side stroke, 102 pushups in 2 min, 98 situps in 2 min, 10 pullups, sub 10 minute 1.5 mile run. I run 3-20 miles a day, have a professional license in Motocross and Boxing, played football for 5 years, Div 1 Rugby player, Run 3-20 miles a day, swim between 500m - 1 mile a day. I have cushing's and cant lose weight. It tears you apart.
Believe me Cushing's Sucks. Im in the Navy and currently being attended to by the National Naval Medical Center. I am transferring to the NIH (National Institute of Health) after Christmas. I have Cushing's. My sole purpose of joining the Navy is to get a chance to be a SEAL. We found that I have this. So as of now my chance at SEAL has been put on hold. And believe me it is terrible. But I am definitely not out of the fight. For those who have it. I understand. Hang in there!!!!!!
@MsFantasticPlastic Already have!!!! Spent a Month in NIH, and had the tumor removed on Valentines Day. I went from 234lbs to 198 lbs and still dropping. Although Im training less than I usd to I have cycled nearly 2000 miles, including San Antonio to Dallas, and Arlington national Cemetery to VA Beach. Waiting for my Pituitary to kick back in but heading back out to the fleet as full duty. Oh yeah and have my first Triathlon in 2 days!!!!! Cushings.....We got this!!!
@MsFantasticPlastic - I did!!! Surgery went great. 60lbs lighter, ran a triathlon, have nearly 4 thousand miles of cycling logged since my surgery date (14 FEB 2011). Still in the Navy and getting faster and stronger.
although i am puzzled by the way you can produce something, fat, out of nothing, i support your battle against high cortisol levels and obesity lowering your standard of life and decreased general social acceptance.
@yenyoo I had a bilateral adrenalectomy (removal of both adrenal glands) to control my Cushing's. I have not dieted or exercised, yet. I have lost 52 pounds in less than 6 months. I expect it to get better as I go lower on replacement hormones. I also expect muscle mass to improve enough for me to exercise safely.
@yenyoo HI just to answer this, fat is a substance which the body can synthesise, the action of cortisol normally is to maintain glucose levels for the brain during times of stress. If the controlling gland (pituitary) or the actual production gland (adrenal cortex) suffers a tumor then the effects can be raised cortisol regardless of bodily need. This creates a chronic raised glucose level, like high sugar intake this is synthesised into fat(storage), but the input may not be dietary sugar/fat
@yenyoo yes, it is puzzling where all the fat could come from if you are not taking in calories. It has to do with how your body manages what you bring in. Cortisol helps the liver convert fat into the energy the body needs to escape danger (fight or flight) Cortisol also signals the body to accumulate fat in the abdomen, building that "apple" shape that is so hazardous to health. If you have excess coritsol, you will have more of this going on.
@yenyoo Cortisol doesn't produce something out of nothing. Cortisol causes the body to disassemble muscle and convert it to fat. Fat has a low energy requirement compared with muscle. The muscle weakness caused by cushing's syndrome is caused by breakdown of the largest and nearest muscles, for instance muscles of the thigh and arms, and conversion into fat.
this woman needs to be on a strict 1200 calorie diet low fat diet. it is impossible to gain weight if you use more calories than you take in. there are also ways to lower cortisol levels with drugs.
This is Kate from the video. I have had 5 surgeries plus radiation since this video. Have lost 110 lbs. Unfortunately, I am showing signs of recurrence (this will be my fourth go).Despite full removal of my pituitary gland + adrenals.
And yes, you can gain weight while running 5 miles a day. It's called Cushing's Disease. Google it. Would you like to fight for your very life for four years only to read here how uninformed people are bashing you to pieces?
@sweetkatemyers God, that sucks. I know what it's like, I think. PCOS -and- Thyroid issues. Being very active for a full year and only eating 1,200 calories a day has only shaved off five pounds. And of course... no insurance. I'm screwed. But hey, ignore these shitstains. Youtube commentators are not known for their genius.
@carlpoisson This is Kate from the video. You are misinformed, have not watched this video, know nothing about Cushing's disease and are generally a compassionate-less jerk. After 5 surgeries including total removal of my pituitary gland and both adrenal glands, I can no longer produce or over-produce cortisol. I've lost 130 lbs while continuing to eat a the same healthy diet I did when I had the disease. Stop spreading your hate to sick people on the internet, you troll!!!
@UncagedDreamer I meant that a lot of doctors just assume that what's wrong with someone is the most common disease, problem, illness, and they don't think outside the box. Of course they're good enough to get a doctorate but they aren't as good at problem solving. it's a bit ridiculous when a patient needs to go to multiple doctors to find a solution because they don't feel like investigating further to find out what's wrong. You feel me?
THE REASON people get fat is that humans (and animals) have the ability to adapt to their nature.. Man had to adapt to a lack of food (10-400k yrs ago), which is rare today (only in poor countries) and we had to evolve to store the food somewhere inside the body to survive.. They never had weight problems because they had to walk 50-200km/day to find or catch something to eat..
today the hardest thing is to get up and go buy something.. sorry for my bad english
@monarofreak get a midnight cortisol drawn. That test will sort out anxiety from cushing's. Contact me backchannel if you need the medical journal references.
@TiredOldFart Thanks mate, i'm pretty certain i don't have cushings syndrome cause that is a rare and really serious disorder, but my cortisol levels are higher than average. I guess what i wanted to say but never got around to was that doctors don't see abnormalities unless it is really obvious, you either have cushings disease or addisons disease and if you fall inbetween those two extremes there's nothing wrong with ya. I'm mainly just looking for ways to lower my cortisol levels.
Though i think i threw the test off because i made a point of drinking a LOT of water for the test, so much i filled the whole bottle up and couldn't piss in it anymore cause it was full. My line of reasoning was because the first time around i didn't fill the bottle up that much and the lady at the desk told me i should be urinating more than that, so i got it in my head that if i drink more i'd flush the stress hormones out of my system and feel better
While i carry a lot of fat on my abdomen my arms and legs are fairly lean. When i got my bloods done the first time around my cortisol levels were through the roof, but cause i was seeing the doc for anxiety he said it was cause i was stressed out, i did a 24 hour urine test a week later and he said they were back in the normal range but wouldn't let me look at them. Though i think i threw the test off because i made a point of drinking a LOT of water for the test
Wow a lot of ignorant people posting on this vid that really don't have a clue just how large of a role our hormones play in our bodies.
Just a question for the uploader, with your cushings did you suffer from anxiety or depression?
I've been suffering from anxiety on and off, and while i don't have cushings which is an extreme condition i do share some similarities, i get a double chin fairly easily that gets that ''moon face'' and i carry a lot of fat on my abdomen.
i'm sorry but andretheking is totally ignorant. let me educate you.
yes, normal people with normal metabolism can remain a healthy weight if they act correctly. HOWEVER those who are MISSING hormones or OVERPRODUCING hormones needed for METABOLISM (the thing that makes you lose or gain weight when u eat/don't eat & exercise/don't exercise) CAN'T!
When you have Cushing's you can be a size 1, work out religiously for an excessive amount of time and GAIN 100s of #s on a normal calorie diet.
@m0a0t7rix have you read anything that i posted? or did you just assume that i think people with cushings disease (or any other hormonal disease in that case) are fat because they over eat? im guessing it is the second one .. my advice, read what the person actually said, and not what other people thought i said before you try and call me ignorant
@m0a0t7rix ok, please tell me one time where i have ever said people with cushings disease are fat b/c of laziness? you cant find it b/c i never said it .. people are so quick to jump on someone when they never even said that .. what i said was, i feel bad for the VERY rare case where someone has a disease like this b/c they cant help it .. but for everyone else who DOESNT have this disease, all they have to do is burn more calories then they consume .. read what the fuck i said next time dummy
First off, I feel bad that she said ‘’when she was cute’’ at a much smaller weight as if she’s ugly now. That’s horrible. She’s cute now as well and there are many men who like BBW.
I can’t say I fit all the symptoms for I have been big all my life (since 8) but Coushings Syndrom due to over active cortisone from stress sounds exactly like me.
unless you are the women in the video, or have the same disease as her, you are fat because of only 1 reason, you eat more than you burn off ... so again, unless you have this disease, i don't want to hear bullshit like "i can't lose weight" .. yes you can, you just don't want to ... its very simple actually
@andretheking86 its easier said than done, I am obese sadly and no matter what I do when I lose weight I get super sick like my body gets angry with me when I lose weight, I have no clue why but I pass out a lot more when I lose weight and tend to vomit easier.
your body might be disagreeing with you probably for 1 of 2 reasons
1. you're not dieting healthy (you go on one of those bs TV diets that promise you to lose like 500 pounds in a week by eating orange peels) so when you do that, your body is just gonna shit itself
2. if you have been eating nothing but cheetos and cookies for how ever many years you have lived, then all of a sudden start eating right, your body isn't going to be used to it ... (cont.)
(cont) ... to be honest, it really isn't that hard, eat healthy, don't eat if you are going to bed in an hour or less, eat like 5-7 small portioned meals a day (speeds up metabolism), drink lots of water, and work out ... as long as you burn more calories than you take in than you should be fine ...
@andretheking86 Not necessarily no, but with the lifestyle that I do live, which is where I cant always meet my own needs, I am ill very often, and tend to need more care now than I did when I could get the types of food I needed. So yes I can change my life, it's the environment I live in that keeps me from doing so.
don't try me. I am sick right now, I am working to try and lower my weight, I can't do it like a normal person has to. Sorry to say but from what you are saying, you cannot be an overweight person, because an overweight person would be at least more tactful about it instead of being really really brutal. You have to learn to understand that people are not all built the exact same, I need more special care than most people. It is not because I dont want to... dont even try that as an answer.
@andretheking86 and frankly, I know you are trying to help, so I am trying not to snap... but I am sick right now... and frankly... I dont think it's fair that this all my fault its a predetermined problem in my family... there is nothing i can do. I am stuck with it whether i like it or not. That is why easier said than done was in my first comment... because I cant get away from it.
@FutureTeacher99 sorry for being saying the truth ... i just don't understand why people beat around the bush when it comes to things like this .. if you're an alcoholic, stop drinking ... if you have bad grades, start studying and if you are overweight, than stop eating unhealthy and exercise more .. you said you had a disease (which if you do, than of course it won't be as simple as i make it), but you said it doesn't affect your diet so i don't see where im wrong ...
@andretheking86 It does because I dont have a continuous access to food, I almost had to go to the hospital yesterday actually because a test ran through a time slot where I was supposed to be eating something and you can't eat during testing. So my friend is freaking out because I'm falling unconscious and she doesnt know what to do. I can't do anything about the food I eat, because there is nothing I can do, I eat whatever I can find sometimes, even if I know that it's bad for me.
@andretheking86 I'm not saying you are wrong, because you are right, I should be able to eat right and do well for myself, but that isn't always a posibility for me. I have to meet my needs and that isn't always a doable thing and unless I want to spend the rest of my time in a hospital, I can't be like the other students and go without eating, as much as I have tried. So unless you have any other suggestions, what I am doing now, is my only choice. Thank you for all your help and input.
@FutureTeacher99 no one is telling you not to eat ... it is actually better if you eat like 5-7 meals every 2-3 hours, but have them in small portions and eat things that will keep you out of the hospital (for dietary reasons at least) .. and how do you get your food? next time you're healthy enough to go grocery shopping, buy food in bulk and get things that are good for you like lean meat, fresh fruit and veggies and things high in protein, fiber etc.
@andretheking86 I get my food through the college I attend, I had another scare today, I almost fell over. My friend was going to take me to the hospital, if it tells you anything I am surviving off Ensure. It's the only way I can get what I need.
@FutureTeacher99 well idk what to tell you ... if you want to lose weight and be healthy, than the answer is very simple (exercise at least 3 times a week and have a balanced diet), i really don't know your situation on your health, but i can guarantee that losing weight, eating healthy and being active will cut out at least half of most people's basic health problems ... and i never heard of any doctor recommending a patient that they shouldn't be active, eat healthy or a combo of the both ...
@andretheking86 he is still my doctor. I was born with a knee displasia and he wants to break my joints over a steel bar to break the bone into place.... ouch
@andretheking86 Hence why I never go to the doctor unless I am almost dying. It also made part of me want to become a doctor just to proove to him that I could be better.
@staticnrg9 bull poop. there is no way that is true considering that more muscles prevent osteoporosis. you are thinking about Olympians my friend. walking/running and of course weight lifting helps your body
@staticnrg9 but... when looking at it from a thermodynamic standpoint, if the BMR (basal metabolic rate) of a person happens to be around 2000 (arbitrarily), and they consume a diet of 1200 kcal/day, how is it feasible from a physical standpoint for the person with Cushing's to gain weight despite this caloric deficit? Kilojoules in =/= Kilojoules out apparently
@JohnnyMidnight1 THat's just the thing, Johnny.... BMR for a "Cushie" isn't normal. It's an endocrine issue. The endocrine system is what regulates metabolism. High cortisol wreaks havoc on this system. As a sidenote: I had a bilateral adrenalectomy to treat my Cushing's 6 weeks ago. Without trying, I have lost 22 pounds since then.
@staticnrg9 oh, congratulations!!! but anyway... I guess the analogy I've got stuck in my head is a big ol' oversized Cushing's Syndrome V8/V10 SUV being able to travel 100 miles per gallon... It's just not physically possible, or at least it just doesn't make sense... I'm not denying the existence of Cushing's, I'm just trying to understand the mechanics of it... So I'm guessing the excess Cortisol must nullify or reduce critical body functions to compensate for it's caloric overefficiency?
@JohnnyMidnight1 You're not going to balance the equation because you don't have all the unknowns. The body abandons the consumption side in CS. A good example is impaired protein synthesis. Muscles aren't maintained, they get consumed as fuel. Meanwhile the food gets stored away as fat because the cells can't access glucose when cortisol is high. Cell metabolism gets turned down. Cells don't get repaired as often. Bones don't receive replenishment they need, so osteoporosis sets in.

Because uneducated, uninformed ‘’know it all’s’’ ASSUME certain types of weight loss (or weight gain for folks with such high metabolisms only steroids will work) is the same as washing your clothes or some other overly simple task.
Ironically I NEVER hear these ‘’know it alls’’ addicts to simply STOP smoking, drinking, or using drugs. They somehow realize (perhaps because they themselves are addicted) that addicts can't simply stop smoking.....
...............Just like a crippled can’t simply get up and run. Or a deaf person can’t simply clean their ears 2 hear properly.
If someone is fat because they are lazy & overeat from depression or being a couch potato then simply turning the TV off & getting off their but will work.
If they are fat despite how much they exercise, walk, & eat healthy as this lady did (& I constantly do) then obviously won't work! Something else obviously is wrong.
@Sogwa lol, idk why you're mad right now, have you read any of my comments? i agree with you for the most part .. if you have a disease that wasn't caused from personal choices (like smoking, eating too much junk food, drinking too much etc) than you can't do anything about it, its not their fault .. but for those who willingly over eat, chain smoke, drink their brains out etc, i show no sympathy for them b/c it was their choice not to be healthy and they should have expected whats coming
you're one of the simpletons, right? don't know much, hate yourself, afraid no one will love you if you are fat? ''burning calories'' is a function of your me-tab-o-lis-m --> say it with me. metabolism is a function of your hor-mone-s --> if your hor-mone-s are not accurate within a range, you CAN become fat, regardless of how much you eat. Please for the love of knowledge, do something for your ignorance like.. i know! i know! READ. and read and read until all the stupid is gone.
@m0a0t7rix good one fuck head, why dont YOU .. READ .. what I SAID .. not what someone else said what they THOUGHT i might have been refering to .. please, since you want to make a big deal about it, tell me where i said people with a disease like this are just lazy and fat ....
... people are so fucking stupid its literally painful ...
@andretheking86 Until you've been there with this disease, which doctors have a very hard time diagnosing, you have no clue. Many people suffer with it and are never diagnosed. Doctors and folks like you don't see beyond the obesity.
@staticnrg9 but the disease isn't as common in humans so his general statement is pretty spot on. I used to be obeses but with moderation and exercise a lost a considerable amount of weight.
@Revix77 The new research shows up to 20% of the population have pituitary tumors. One cause of Cushing's disease is a pituitary tumor. It is NOT as rare as once thought.
@andretheking86 and even if that is the case why be a f ing jerk about it?Take it from someone who has battled with his weight since age 18 people who are fat REALLY do NOT want to be.Burning off more than what you take in sounds easy but isn't because humans aren't born with gas guages.I was a person that was very active, I ate about the same things my friends ate but while they remained the same I gained.I weighed as much as 350 at one point.I now weigh around 300 so I'm making progress.
@andretheking86 what I would like to see is healthy choices displayed as prominently as the unhealthy stuff.Ideas for healthy meals because man can't live on salad alone would be nice. But you see none of that.Staying under 2000 calories for women and 2500 for men don't do a dam thing for people.Real world examples are needed and I for one am not seeing them.
@gamesmaster35 lol, you want me to be like a nutritionist for you? idk why people find this so hard
look at labels, read the ingrediants to the food you consume .. instead of fruit punch or soda, drink water, instead of fries have a baked potato, egg whites instead of whole eggs, skim milk instead of whole milk, baked chicken breast instead of fried wings etc.. the actual solution is VERY SIMPLE, the only thing that is hard is sticking too it if you don't have much will power
@gamesmaster35 ... its good you're making progress .. but again, its a very simple solution, if at the end of each day you take in more calories than you burn, you will gain weight, if you burn more than you take in, you will lose weight .. idk why so many people keep saying im not understanding or im a jerk or whatever .. its basic math .. and everyones motabolism is different, yours is probably alot slower than your friends and that is why you weigh 300+ pounds, and youre probably less active
@andretheking86 You have an oversimplified belief about gland health and weight gain. When there is too much cortisol, a stress hormone, it inhibits the ability to burn fat, because the body is in survival mode. This is the reason why people gain weight while being on a diet for a while. With regular healthy people (how many of those are around these days) it is all about calories in and calories burned.
@researchfiend ??? i understand completely what happened in the video, the disease that this woman, and others who also have this and similar diseases, are in a group of a very few people who actually have an excuse when it comes to weight control .. everyone else is the size they are because they want to be that size
reading many other posts you posted, youre only half right about this issue. even a balanced diet and with consistent exercise, some just cant lose. others like my neighbor, for example, eat like horses and they dont gain weight at all. exercise and diet indeed is the ONLY answer in a healthy person, that is, in someone whose hormones are at the quantities nature wanted them to be. in todays world, you dont find many people like that anymore.
@856893tfr who is to say a meal is balanced? everyone's "balance" is different .. and i will put money on it, that if you took the average human and made him/her burn more calories than he/she takes in than they will lose weight .. and if they take in more than he/she burns they will gain weight .. idk why so many people want to go after me trying to say im wrong, its simple 1st grade math .....
who is to say a meal is balanced you asked? just put it simply.....its whatever the doctors say will be healthy in the diet plan sheet they give you.............. like i said its not just the math. if it were so, everyone that went on a diet would get leaner. hormones count too. if you have high levels of insulin or cortisol or in women, very high levels of testosterone, then yeah its not just the math that counts.
ill put my money that the average human wont lose a pound with exercise. you actually burn very little calories with exercise. the most your body will allow to be burned in one session is about 700 calories. 3500 cals make a pound. add to that hormones and the environment we live in, genetics, etc, it is not that simple. at first i bashed you because i thought you were heartless. now im bashing you because you oversimplify things.
@856893tfr lmao, thats why so many people are fat in this country, they expect to lose weight after working out like once a month, if you work out like 3-5 times a week and you eat healthy food full of all the nutrients you need, you will lose weight/get in shape .. and im not over simplifying it, it really is that simple .. the hard part is sticking to the meals/excercize, everyone wants to look good, but nobody wants to put down the ice cream and work out
once a month workout you say? no dont put words in my mouth. ive been around people in the gym who just cant lose weight and they workout harder than me. survival mode lasts a long time..... and sadly it can come about because of a 500 calorie deficit. your body doesnt like any kind of change in your system. where i got the last bit of info? from my health teacher at college. i want to be a specialist in peoples metabolisms, so i hang around with people in related fields
and its been proven that with consuming less calories than you burn, your body can actually end up in survival mode. it thinks "oh this guy is not gonna give me enough energy, so ill store fat for later" and youd find a lot of skinny dudes are actually overeating because they wanna gain a bit of weight, but they cant gain. most fat people dont want to be fat. so dont give me the basic freshman health class discourse.
@856893tfr that survival mode thing you're talking about is true for a very short period of time .. and thats only if you go from eating like 3K calories a day to eating like a cup of yogurt all day, if you eat like 6 or 7 small healthy meals that add up to a caloric defficit when you work out and stick with it, you will lose weight .. idc how skinny you are, if you stuff down burgers and sit on your couch all day, after a while you will start to get fat
you just dont know what a lot of people are going through. like the owner of this video told you, a lot of people with endocrine disorders dont get diagnosed correctly. it is possible to eat right and exercise and still gain weight like crazy. you could actually end up gaining MORE weight through exercise because exercise temporarily heightens cortisol levels. its not as easy as you think it is.
@856893tfr (sigh) AGAIN, im not bashing anyone who has any kind of disorder, but lets be honest here, out of the countless people who are overweight/obese, do you really think any more than like 3% has some crazy rare disorder like the one in the video? and everyone knows a disease like that isn't common and that is why theres like a discovery channel special on it because its so rare .. everyone else just consumes more than they burn off .. and yes it is that simple
in todays world, generally speaking, most everyones hormones are out of tune with what nature wanted the hormones to be. its not the calories that matter as much as your body's processes. you dont necessarily need to have a disease or a disorder to have your hormones out of balance. most people have a couple hormones out of whack, so not enough to be a full blown disorder, but enough to hinder weight loss goals.
@856893tfr and where did you get that last bit of info?
at the end of the day, it goes back to the same basic principal, if you eat less, eat healthy and exercise more, on a consistant basis, you will lose weight, and if you do the opposite, than you will gain weight .. period .. your body can't go on survival mode for long brah .. thats why its survival mode, because the body is doing whatever it takes to stay alive for the next day, so after a while your body has no choice but to lose weight
even so though, you proved to be a level headed guy so i have nothing against you (anymore that is, at first yeah, i thought you were trolling). i think that we can keep talking in circles and never get anywhere. agree to disagree like i say. im not gonna say "end of discussion" (thats pretty cowardly), but i can see this convo wont get us anywhere.
Coming from a family that suffers from obesity on both sides, my heart goes out to everyone who is/has struggled with it. It's hard enough living with all the issues that come along with it, then you have to worry about what other's are thinking/saying/acting towards you because of your weight. It is not always because of laziness or over eating. Sometimes your body just stores a lot more fat than your average person. Some of the best people I know are overweight.
It's horrible how people who have never had a weight problem cast judgment on those who are overweight. How can someone who has never had to deal with weight have any idea of the struggles involved with being obese. It's sad to see the amount of negative comments having to do with obese people being greedy, lazy, and disgusting. Being a "fat hater" is just as bad as being a racist, or hating homosexuals. I guess it is just easier to make fun of something you don't understand. :(
I struggled with obesity through most of my teenage years (so I DO know what it's like), but then I educated myself thoroughly on the basics of calorie consuming vs. calorie burning (among other things), and now, as I near the age of 21, I am thin, lean, and healthy with just a little bit of belly fat left between me and my goal.
Essentially, I beat obesity through strict self-discipline, and unless the obese person in question has this rare glandular problem, it is all his or her fault.
@Shmackii a) maybe some of those skinny people were fat originally and fianlly lost the weight B) there comments are merely based on observation as opposed to experience C) their just jerks
The energy required to make her fat must come from somewhere, unless her body is very efficient on a low fat diet and is able to make fat from low calorie food somehow, or the air she breathes is turned into fat. My thinking is that she was active started a stressfull desk job, stopped exercising and snacked alot while her metabolism tanked, cushings may play a part but its not the whole story.
I have cushing's and had every symptom including a 110 lbs weight gain. I have been to 25 drs only to be given more and more restrictions on my diet until I was hospitalized for malnutrition and dehydration! I even had an Endocrinologist refuse to check me because "it is just so rare." I am now in early organ failure and have to have surgery. It is hard to face that I probably won't see my youngest graduate from high school because I was an assumed overeater! Cushing's is real and can be fatal!
I think your reply is based on ignorance. I am 4'11" and 217lbs. I am currently being treated at mayo clinic in Mn for cushing's disease. I eat 600 calories a day for over 5 years and had my drs assume that I was lying about my eating habits too. I am extremely active and exercise 3 hours per day with a very restrictive diet. I was hospitalized for malnutrition and dehydration due to my low calorie diet! You don't have it and are ignorant to it. You should apologise for your ignorance.
can anyone help me out? Since I was 8, I started disforming, while eating the same, active kid, etc. But my limbs are skinny. CHICKEN LEGS. But all the fat is on my torso. I always had a fat stomach, fat wide back. At 14 I got the "buffalo hump", and my family used to make fun of me. Now I'm thinner, I'm 5'1 weigh 118, BUT my waist is 32 inches! my chest is 36, and hips 37. Is it possible that I have Cushing's Syndrome?

Man what is really scary is how huge young American women are these days. I was recently browsing through various different banquet group photos of only women for a project and one of things that struck me was how many women between 25 and 35 are morbidly obese. I'm not making a judgment, just an observation. This, my friends is not a genetic problem. It all boils down to what we are putting in our mouths on a daily basis.

Hi doctor - my sister was on high doses of prednisolone in her teen years (lupus) and she then had to have a kidney transplant. She has now been on tacrolimus and mycophanalate for several years and has all the symptoms of cushing, including pain around the middle and lower part of the brain. My question is: Can tacrolimus and mycophanalate cause cushing, or stop it from healing? Do those drugs affect hormonal function? Very grateful for a prompt response... thank you!!

I was lucky and was diagnosed early. so when youre really stressed all the time, you will likely develop this kind of disease? answer me asap please
funtimeslaugh 1 year ago
@funtimeslaugh No. High cortisol at the wrong time of the day (reversed diurnal pattern) causes Cushing's disease. The high cortisol is usually caused by a tumor on the pituitary gland or on the adrenal glands. Sometimes there are also tumors in other parts of the body called ectopic tumors. Some folks do get it by taking too many corticosteroids (hydrocortisone, prednisone, dexamethasone, etc.) but that can be reversed just by stopping the corticosteroids under a doctors supervision.
staticnrg9 1 year ago 5
@funtimeslaugh no - you get this disease when your body overproduces the hormones that it secretes normally in times of stress. There are many causes for the overproduction, but I don't think stress is one of them at this level....though of course constant stress is not good either.

I'm just one of many folks with Cushing's.
staticnrg9 1 year ago 3
@yenyoo HI just to answer this, fat is a substance which the body can synthesise, the action of cortisol normally is to maintain glucose levels for the brain during times of stress. If the controlling gland (pituitary) or the actual production gland (adrenal cortex) suffers a tumor then the effects can be raised cortisol regardless of bodily need. This creates a chronic raised glucose level, like high sugar intake this is synthesised into fat(storage), but the input may not be dietary sugar/fat
sedicirich 11 months ago
@yenyoo yes, it is puzzling where all the fat could come from if you are not taking in calories. It has to do with how your body manages what you bring in. Cortisol helps the liver convert fat into the energy the body needs to escape danger (fight or flight) Cortisol also signals the body to accumulate fat in the abdomen, building that "apple" shape that is so hazardous to health. If you have excess coritsol, you will have more of this going on.
Bhav341 10 months ago
@yenyoo Cortisol doesn't produce something out of nothing. Cortisol causes the body to disassemble muscle and convert it to fat. Fat has a low energy requirement compared with muscle. The muscle weakness caused by cushing's syndrome is caused by breakdown of the largest and nearest muscles, for instance muscles of the thigh and arms, and conversion into fat.

I'm mainly just looking for ways to lower my cortisol levels.
monarofreak 1 year ago
Though i think i threw the test off because i made a point of drinking a LOT of water for the test, so much i filled the whole bottle up and couldn't piss in it anymore cause it was full. My line of reasoning was because the first time around i didn't fill the bottle up that much and the lady at the desk told me i should be urinating more than that, so i got it in my head that if i drink more i'd flush the stress hormones out of my system and feel better

yes, normal people with normal metabolism can remain a healthy weight if they act correctly. HOWEVER those who are MISSING hormones or OVERPRODUCING hormones needed for METABOLISM (the thing that makes you lose or gain weight when u eat/don't eat & exercise/don't exercise) CAN'T!
When you have Cushing's you can be a size 1, work out religiously for an excessive amount of time and GAIN 100s of #s on a normal calorie diet.

unless you are the women in the video, or have the same disease as her, you are fat because of only 1 reason, you eat more than you burn off ... so again, unless you have this disease, i don't want to hear bullshit like "i can't lose weight" .. yes you can, you just don't want to ... its very simple actually
andretheking86 1 year ago
@andretheking86 its easier said than done, I am obese sadly and no matter what I do when I lose weight I get super sick like my body gets angry with me when I lose weight, I have no clue why but I pass out a lot more when I lose weight and tend to vomit easier.
FutureTeacher99 1 year ago
@FutureTeacher99
your body might be disagreeing with you probably for 1 of 2 reasons
1. you're not dieting healthy (you go on one of those bs TV diets that promise you to lose like 500 pounds in a week by eating orange peels) so when you do that, your body is just gonna shit itself
2. if you have been eating nothing but cheetos and cookies for how ever many years you have lived, then all of a sudden start eating right, your body isn't going to be used to it ... (cont.)
andretheking86 1 year ago
@FutureTeacher99
(cont) ... to be honest, it really isn't that hard, eat healthy, don't eat if you are going to bed in an hour or less, eat like 5-7 small portioned meals a day (speeds up metabolism), drink lots of water, and work out ... as long as you burn more calories than you take in than you should be fine ...
andretheking86 1 year ago
@andretheking86 Yeah but I cant do that, I have hypoglycemia and if I dont eat on time or eat enough I can die.
FutureTeacher99 1 year ago
@FutureTeacher99 so you're saying this disease prevents you from living a healthy lifestyle?
andretheking86 1 year ago
@andretheking86 Not necessarily no, but with the lifestyle that I do live, which is where I cant always meet my own needs, I am ill very often, and tend to need more care now than I did when I could get the types of food I needed. So yes I can change my life, it's the environment I live in that keeps me from doing so.
FutureTeacher99 1 year ago
@FutureTeacher99 bullshit, anyone can eat healthy and exercise ... you just don't want to ... unless you are sick or something ...
andretheking86 1 year ago
don't try me.
FutureTeacher99 1 year ago
@andretheking86 and frankly, I know you are trying to help, so I am trying not to snap... but I am sick right now... and frankly... I dont think it's fair that this all my fault its a predetermined problem in my family... there is nothing i can do. I am stuck with it whether i like it or not. That is why easier said than done was in my first comment... because I cant get away from it.
FutureTeacher99 1 year ago
@FutureTeacher99 sorry for being saying the truth ... i just don't understand why people beat around the bush when it comes to things like this .. if you're an alcoholic, stop drinking ... if you have bad grades, start studying and if you are overweight, than stop eating unhealthy and exercise more .. you said you had a disease (which if you do, than of course it won't be as simple as i make it), but you said it doesn't affect your diet so i don't see where im wrong ...
andretheking86 1 year ago
@andretheking86 It does because I dont have a continuous access to food, I almost had to go to the hospital yesterday actually because a test ran through a time slot where I was supposed to be eating something and you can't eat during testing. So my friend is freaking out because I'm falling unconscious and she doesnt know what to do. I can't do anything about the food I eat, because there is nothing I can do, I eat whatever I can find sometimes, even if I know that it's bad for me.
FutureTeacher99 1 year ago
@andretheking86 I'm not saying you are wrong, because you are right, I should be able to eat right and do well for myself, but that isn't always a posibility for me. I have to meet my needs and that isn't always a doable thing and unless I want to spend the rest of my time in a hospital, I can't be like the other students and go without eating, as much as I have tried. So unless you have any other suggestions, what I am doing now, is my only choice. Thank you for all your help and input.
FutureTeacher99 1 year ago
@FutureTeacher99 no one is telling you not to eat ... it is actually better if you eat like 5-7 meals every 2-3 hours, but have them in small portions and eat things that will keep you out of the hospital (for dietary reasons at least) .. and how do you get your food? next time you're healthy enough to go grocery shopping, buy food in bulk and get things that are good for you like lean meat, fresh fruit and veggies and things high in protein, fiber etc.
andretheking86 1 year ago
@andretheking86 I get my food through the college I attend, I had another scare today, I almost fell over. My friend was going to take me to the hospital, if it tells you anything I am surviving off Ensure. It's the only way I can get what I need.
FutureTeacher99 1 year ago
@FutureTeacher99 well idk what to tell you ... if you want to lose weight and be healthy, than the answer is very simple (exercise at least 3 times a week and have a balanced diet), i really don't know your situation on your health, but i can guarantee that losing weight, eating healthy and being active will cut out at least half of most people's basic health problems ... and i never heard of any doctor recommending a patient that they shouldn't be active, eat healthy or a combo of the both ...

staticnrg9 1 year ago 6
@staticnrg9 bull poop. there is no way that is true considering that more muscles prevent osteoporosis. you are thinking about Olympians my friend. walking/running and of course weight lifting helps your body
Russellt0228 1 year ago
@staticnrg9 but... when looking at it from a thermodynamic standpoint, if the BMR (basal metabolic rate) of a person happens to be around 2000 (arbitrarily), and they consume a diet of 1200 kcal/day, how is it feasible from a physical standpoint for the person with Cushing's to gain weight despite this caloric deficit? Kilojoules in =/= Kilojoules out apparently
JohnnyMidnight1 1 year ago
@JohnnyMidnight1 THat's just the thing, Johnny.... BMR for a "Cushie" isn't normal. It's an endocrine issue. The endocrine system is what regulates metabolism. High cortisol wreaks havoc on this system. As a sidenote: I had a bilateral adrenalectomy to treat my Cushing's 6 weeks ago. Without trying, I have lost 22 pounds since then.
staticnrg9 1 year ago
@staticnrg9 oh, congratulations!!! but anyway... I guess the analogy I've got stuck in my head is a big ol' oversized Cushing's Syndrome V8/V10 SUV being able to travel 100 miles per gallon... It's just not physically possible, or at least it just doesn't make sense... I'm not denying the existence of Cushing's, I'm just trying to understand the mechanics of it... So I'm guessing the excess Cortisol must nullify or reduce critical body functions to compensate for it's caloric overefficiency?
JohnnyMidnight1 1 year ago

@staticnrg9 but the disease isn't as common in humans so his general statement is pretty spot on. I used to be obeses but with moderation and exercise a lost a considerable amount of weight.

@Revix77 The new research shows up to 20% of the population have pituitary tumors. One cause of Cushing's disease is a pituitary tumor. It is NOT as rare as once thought.
staticnrg9 1 year ago
@andretheking86 and even if that is the case why be a f ing jerk about it?Take it from someone who has battled with his weight since age 18 people who are fat REALLY do NOT want to be.Burning off more than what you take in sounds easy but isn't because humans aren't born with gas guages.I was a person that was very active, I ate about the same things my friends ate but while they remained the same I gained.I weighed as much as 350 at one point.I now weigh around 300 so I'm making progress.
gamesmaster35 1 year ago
@andretheking86 what I would like to see is healthy choices displayed as prominently as the unhealthy stuff.Ideas for healthy meals because man can't live on salad alone would be nice. But you see none of that.Staying under 2000 calories for women and 2500 for men don't do a dam thing for people.Real world examples are needed and I for one am not seeing them.
gamesmaster35 1 year ago
@gamesmaster35 lol, you want me to be like a nutritionist for you? idk why people find this so hard
look at labels, read the ingrediants to the food you consume .. instead of fruit punch or soda, drink water, instead of fries have a baked potato, egg whites instead of whole eggs, skim milk instead of whole milk, baked chicken breast instead of fried wings etc.. the actual solution is VERY SIMPLE, the only thing that is hard is sticking too it if you don't have much will power
andretheking86 1 year ago
@gamesmaster35 ... its good you're making progress .. but again, its a very simple solution, if at the end of each day you take in more calories than you burn, you will gain weight, if you burn more than you take in, you will lose weight .. idk why so many people keep saying im not understanding or im a jerk or whatever .. its basic math .. and everyones motabolism is different, yours is probably alot slower than your friends and that is why you weigh 300+ pounds, and youre probably less active
andretheking86 1 year ago
@andretheking86 You have an oversimplified belief about gland health and weight gain. When there is too much cortisol, a stress hormone, it inhibits the ability to burn fat, because the body is in survival mode. This is the reason why people gain weight while being on a diet for a while. With regular healthy people (how many of those are around these days) it is all about calories in and calories burned.
researchfiend 1 year ago
@researchfiend ??? i understand completely what happened in the video, the disease that this woman, and others who also have this and similar diseases, are in a group of a very few people who actually have an excuse when it comes to weight control .. everyone else is the size they are because they want to be that size
andretheking86 1 year ago
@andretheking86
reading many other posts you posted, youre only half right about this issue. even a balanced diet and with consistent exercise, some just cant lose. others like my neighbor, for example, eat like horses and they dont gain weight at all. exercise and diet indeed is the ONLY answer in a healthy person, that is, in someone whose hormones are at the quantities nature wanted them to be. in todays world, you dont find many people like that anymore.
856893tfr 1 year ago
@856893tfr who is to say a meal is balanced? everyone's "balance" is different .. and i will put money on it, that if you took the average human and made him/her burn more calories than he/she takes in than they will lose weight .. and if they take in more than he/she burns they will gain weight .. idk why so many people want to go after me trying to say im wrong, its simple 1st grade math .....
andretheking86 1 year ago
@andretheking86
who is to say a meal is balanced you asked? just put it simply.....its whatever the doctors say will be healthy in the diet plan sheet they give you.............. like i said its not just the math. if it were so, everyone that went on a diet would get leaner. hormones count too. if you have high levels of insulin or cortisol or in women, very high levels of testosterone, then yeah its not just the math that counts.

ill put my money that the average human wont lose a pound with exercise. you actually burn very little calories with exercise. the most your body will allow to be burned in one session is about 700 calories. 3500 cals make a pound. add to that hormones and the environment we live in, genetics, etc, it is not that simple. at first i bashed you because i thought you were heartless. now im bashing you because you oversimplify things.
856893tfr 1 year ago
@856893tfr lmao, thats why so many people are fat in this country, they expect to lose weight after working out like once a month, if you work out like 3-5 times a week and you eat healthy food full of all the nutrients you need, you will lose weight/get in shape .. and im not over simplifying it, it really is that simple .. the hard part is sticking to the meals/excercize, everyone wants to look good, but nobody wants to put down the ice cream and work out
andretheking86 1 year ago
@andretheking86
once a month workout you say? no dont put words in my mouth. ive been around people in the gym who just cant lose weight and they workout harder than me. survival mode lasts a long time..... and sadly it can come about because of a 500 calorie deficit. your body doesnt like any kind of change in your system. where i got the last bit of info? from my health teacher at college. i want to be a specialist in peoples metabolisms, so i hang around with people in related fields
856893tfr 1 year ago
@andretheking86
and its been proven that with consuming less calories than you burn, your body can actually end up in survival mode. it thinks "oh this guy is not gonna give me enough energy, so ill store fat for later" and youd find a lot of skinny dudes are actually overeating because they wanna gain a bit of weight, but they cant gain. most fat people dont want to be fat. so dont give me the basic freshman health class discourse.
856893tfr 1 year ago
@856893tfr that survival mode thing you're talking about is true for a very short period of time .. and thats only if you go from eating like 3K calories a day to eating like a cup of yogurt all day, if you eat like 6 or 7 small healthy meals that add up to a caloric defficit when you work out and stick with it, you will lose weight .. idc how skinny you are, if you stuff down burgers and sit on your couch all day, after a while you will start to get fat
andretheking86 1 year ago
@andretheking86
you just dont know what a lot of people are going through. like the owner of this video told you, a lot of people with endocrine disorders dont get diagnosed correctly. it is possible to eat right and exercise and still gain weight like crazy. you could actually end up gaining MORE weight through exercise because exercise temporarily heightens cortisol levels. its not as easy as you think it is.
856893tfr 1 year ago
@856893tfr (sigh) AGAIN, im not bashing anyone who has any kind of disorder, but lets be honest here, out of the countless people who are overweight/obese, do you really think any more than like 3% has some crazy rare disorder like the one in the video? and everyone knows a disease like that isn't common and that is why theres like a discovery channel special on it because its so rare .. everyone else just consumes more than they burn off .. and yes it is that simple
andretheking86 1 year ago
@andretheking86
in todays world, generally speaking, most everyones hormones are out of tune with what nature wanted the hormones to be. its not the calories that matter as much as your body's processes. you dont necessarily need to have a disease or a disorder to have your hormones out of balance. most people have a couple hormones out of whack, so not enough to be a full blown disorder, but enough to hinder weight loss goals.
856893tfr 1 year ago
@856893tfr and where did you get that last bit of info?
at the end of the day, it goes back to the same basic principal, if you eat less, eat healthy and exercise more, on a consistant basis, you will lose weight, and if you do the opposite, than you will gain weight .. period .. your body can't go on survival mode for long brah .. thats why its survival mode, because the body is doing whatever it takes to stay alive for the next day, so after a while your body has no choice but to lose weight
andretheking86 1 year ago
@andretheking86
even so though, you proved to be a level headed guy so i have nothing against you (anymore that is, at first yeah, i thought you were trolling). i think that we can keep talking in circles and never get anywhere. agree to disagree like i say. im not gonna say "end of discussion" (thats pretty cowardly), but i can see this convo wont get us anywhere.
