this is the ultimate walking theme. If I ever found a genie in a bottle, one of my wishes would be to have the song green onions play whenever I walked around. Because it would be awsome.
My dads got a B3 with 2 leslies and i must say...nothing can compare to the sound of it. one of the best/coolest instruments on this planet...and getting to be pretty rare at this point!
Hello what are your draw bar settings? Also where can I find the sheet music for this song? I have a concord would I still be able to make it sound like the B3
Hey u play that absolutely bang on mate, sounds n feels like the original. Are u able to do a tutorial so I can learn it, even if u had another camera angle n slow it down so I can c what keys u playin that wud b so appreciated
@Warshadow4 Average price for a B3 is around $3,000 and a Leslie 122 or 147 run about $1,000. Some people get extremely lucky and find someone that is letting a B3 go for $100... it happens, but not to me. A100's go for around $1,500 to 2,000
i love how you shortened the grace notes, sounds a lot better like that X3 takes some skill and feel for swing to play a song like this, i congratulate you
Thanks for posting this great old classic. The sheet music for Booker T.'s original organ part for "Green Onions" can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm - a note-for-note transcription of the main riff.
Oh yeah - I forgot to mention that actually only knew this song as the time for the "Moonlight Dance" (mirror disco ball and blacklights) at the skating rink when i was teenager. Wow, Its nice to connect the dots occasionally. Thanks again
Do you know if the original recording was done on a Hammond "M3" (the spinet) or the 'Baby - B" organ. I wish I had a B3 but was lucky enough to pick up immaculate original owner M3 at an estate sale for $50 and love it. I just can't really play much and I don't have a Leslie yet - Anyway I appreciate your playing and video - I hope to immulate soon Thanks again
@MICKEYMIN2 I've heard from several sources saying that Booker T. played the original on a Hammond M3. I'm not sure if he used a Leslie on this song, it's hard to tell. With or without a Leslie, you should be able to nail the tone from the recording.
@MICKEYMIN2 I'm sure Booker T. did not use a Leslie on this song, just the straight sound from the M3's speakers. The downside of the M3 is it has a smaller keyboard, no full pedalboard, and no fallback.
My advice: Don't buy a B3! Instead check out a Hammond A100. It's exactly the same as a B3, but it has built in speakers. It's also typically much, much cheaper.
That way you can get the mod sound of the M3, and the power of the B3!
@MICKEYMIN2 I read an interview with Booker where he stated that early on he played this song on an M3. He talked about how he had to hold a mic with his legs so as to get it in front of the M3 speaker. (implied no Leslie) However, in the youtube vids I have watched, I have not seen an M3 being used.
Thanks for reply, and yeah I can see the holding the mike with your legs - you probably ( with some practice) actually get some at least some change in tone by moving the mike with your legs (I'd probably drop the mike though) thanks again
This is by far the best cover of the song on youtube. I am just about to get a hammond organ and i was wondering if you used music for this or learnt it by ear. I might be able to copy what your playing but music would help me loads.
Booker T was sixteen when he wrote that. Steve Cropper, the guitarist, was convinced it was a hit and took a dub to Sun Records where he had former Elvis guitarist Scotty Moore make an acetate. Steve then rushed to a local Memphis radio station and had the DJ, who was a friend, play the acetate. The phone lines lit up.The keyboard used was an old Hammond M-1 spinet organ. It had an octave and a half worth of plastic foot pedals with an eight inch speaker at the knee instead of a Leslie speaker.
One of several already posted maybe, but your version is the first I've found where the bass part is played like on the record! The best way I can manage to explain it is: the first black key that is pressed in the bass part is supposed to be at an "off-beat" in the shuffle rhythm, just like you're doing. I'll study this, thanks!
dude you are really good on the organ. i want to learn this song so bad because it is just one of the best organ songs ever, and you did a really good job with your cover.
@dragonpullman haha that would b awesome. im taking organ lessons and my teacher always wants me to play boring crappy church music. i love playing this on the organ.
Thanks everyone for watching and for the really nice comments. I'm sure many of you could play it better trust me it's the Hammond, it's a forgiving instrument and it makes you sound good ;-)
Very nice!! I tried learning to play the organ for the last 40 years but could never get my hands to play different chords at the same time. I envy you. Thanks for sharing your talent.
Your contribution is the best on youtube. I especially like you left hand playing. That's exactly how it is done on the record. Can't you put together a guide, playing slowly and showig your hands. That would be helpful to a lot of people...
Not bad. It's not easy to play this song by ear, although it may look simple. There are some videos on keyboardmag. I think there is no better lesson than that ; )
Yeah at keyboardmag they have a video of Booker T. himself explaining how to play it. The only problem is that Booker played it differently every time. So what he plays in the video isn't the same as what he played back on the 60s single.
But this video is very good! Once I get a video camera I'll post my own try at this song.
Este organista foi quem chegou mais perto de Booker T. Nas notas e no ritmo. Curioso é que apesar de também ser um Hammond B3 o som não é o mesmo que Booker tira.
You're all dumb for relating this song to movies and commercials when you could be discussing the amazing band that wrote this song: Booker T. and the MGs. And by the way, the sand lot was a great movie, but it wasn't the best ever, not even by a long shot.
Great Goin there. This one is not all that easy to do well without backup and as a solo. Your B-3 needs a reverb unit, but that was a common problem when we took of the Hammond cabinets and add the Leslies. Great going keep up the good work. . . .
Nice sound, dtimm. I like your way of playing the left hand Ab just before the down beat -- that is, on the "2 and" in swing time. I've played this many times over the years and have always used my right hand for that particular beat of the measure.
By the way, your B3 is sure in a lot better shape than mine. Mine's a 1957 model that I bought around 1968.
Oh dear God... it's a B3... Or an RT3 if you have the pedal board too. *drool*
Great vid, but the angle the camera is at isn't really conducive to learning the song, as it's difficult to tell what's going on. Could you make a tab and send it to me in a message? That'd be great. I know it's not a hard song... just getting hung up on some stuff.
Great vid though! Wonderful to see it played on its proper instrument! :)
Out of all the "how to's" on how to play this song yours sounds the most correct specifically the intro. All the others seem to be missing a note or two in that part.
It's because Atlantic (who bought out Stax masters) lost the intro to the tape! All versions after the original US (pale blue/black label) Stax 7" and the UK London/Atlantic 7" and first press LPs have that into, but all later versions fade up quickly! Tragic, but true!
