  • so cool ! want to her that on sunday in the church !!

  • this is the ultimate walking theme. If I ever found a genie in a bottle, one of my wishes would be to have the song green onions play whenever I walked around. Because it would be awsome.

  • for more information on the hammond organ and its full range of capabilities, see John Medeski

  • kids these days dont know what good music is anymore............now this is SWAG..........good stuff.

  • tutorial please!!!!!!!

  • My dads got a B3 with 2 leslies and i must say...nothing can compare to the sound of it. one of the best/coolest instruments on this planet...and getting to be pretty rare at this point!

  • I'll play this in church

  • There are several already posted... oh well one more can't hurt

    Respect for that quote!!!!

  • sweet

  • Hello what are your draw bar settings? Also where can I find the sheet music for this song? I have a concord would I still be able to make it sound like the B3

  • Congratulations!

  • Hey u play that absolutely bang on mate, sounds n feels like the original. Are u able to do a tutorial so I can learn it, even if u had another camera angle n slow it down so I can c what keys u playin that wud b so appreciated

  • how much is the organ ?

  • @Warshadow4 Average price for a B3 is around $3,000 and a Leslie 122 or 147 run about $1,000. Some people get extremely lucky and find someone that is letting a B3 go for $100... it happens, but not to me. A100's go for around $1,500 to 2,000

  • @dtimm612 Got one for $20 at my local Goodwill!

  • @WhereMightWaldoB Now that I find hard to believe! You gotta post a vid for proof!

  • i love how you shortened the grace notes, sounds a lot better like that X3 takes some skill and feel for swing to play a song like this, i congratulate you

  • Thanks for sharing...a great cover!

  • how could anyone dislike this

good job on this video it sounds really good

  • Hello great job love it. I have a Hammond Concord is there anyway to make it sound Jazzy or like a B3? Thank you

  • SWEET. The nicest piece I've seen on You Tube.

  • Thanks for posting this great old classic. The sheet music for Booker T.'s original organ part for "Green Onions" can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm - a note-for-note transcription of the main riff.

  • there are alot of vidz of playing g.o. (green onions) but i got to admit, yours is the best i have ever seen!!!!! p.s keep up the good work!

  • Awsome job....Goes to show what a good artist and a quality instrument can produce when matched up.

  • This is perfect!!

  • 9 people have no soul

  • That's theee sound, SWEEEET just missing a wee distortion

  • That's theee sound, SWEEEET

  • B-E-A-UTIFUL!!!!!!!

  • My organ IS running through a Leslie... that's a Leslie 122 in the background. I had it on slow for this song.

  • What organ is this?

  • @omrixeren 1958 Hammond B3

  • @omrixeren That's a B3 without a Leslie speaker

  • P.S. this is AWESOME.

  • Drawbar settings?

  • That is the closest to the original recording that I have heard.

  • this song went really well with THE SANDLOT

  • hell yeah man, keep it goin

  • you say there are several posted, but not all of them are great, or multi toned, this one is dope, keep it going.

  • man this is pretty funky good job

  • nice work !

  • good stuff.....bring on the guitarist...the drummer and the 60's girls...

  • how much did it cost? :)

  • man that was note perfect. timing was great and everything! nice to see a proper hammond organ!

  • you actually did it right, most don't

  • Thanks for the post. It helped clarify some confusion I had about the basic groove.

  • never go wrong with a hammond :D

  • Oh yeah - I forgot to mention that actually only knew this song as the time for the "Moonlight Dance" (mirror disco ball and blacklights) at the skating rink when i was teenager. Wow, Its nice to connect the dots occasionally. Thanks again

  • Do you know if the original recording was done on a Hammond "M3" (the spinet) or the 'Baby - B" organ. I wish I had a B3 but was lucky enough to pick up immaculate original owner M3 at an estate sale for $50 and love it. I just can't really play much and I don't have a Leslie yet - Anyway I appreciate your playing and video - I hope to immulate soon Thanks again

  • @MICKEYMIN2 I've heard from several sources saying that Booker T. played the original on a Hammond M3. I'm not sure if he used a Leslie on this song, it's hard to tell. With or without a Leslie, you should be able to nail the tone from the recording.

  • @MICKEYMIN2 I'm sure Booker T. did not use a Leslie on this song, just the straight sound from the M3's speakers. The downside of the M3 is it has a smaller keyboard, no full pedalboard, and no fallback.

My advice: Don't buy a B3! Instead check out a Hammond A100. It's exactly the same as a B3, but it has built in speakers. It's also typically much, much cheaper.

That way you can get the mod sound of the M3, and the power of the B3!

    Hope that helps :D

  • @MICKEYMIN2 I read an interview with Booker where he stated that early on he played this song on an M3. He talked about how he had to hold a mic with his legs so as to get it in front of the M3 speaker. (implied no Leslie) However, in the youtube vids I have watched, I have not seen an M3 being used.

  • @gaawdzaambi

Thanks for reply, and yeah I can see the holding the mike with your legs - you probably ( with some practice) actually get some at least some change in tone by moving the mike with your legs (I'd probably drop the mike though) thanks again

  • Really nice solo!!!! Could you make a tutorial for it???? It would be a huge help

  • Booker T Live @ Maryport Blues Festival 24th July 2010

  • sweet

  • AWESOME man

  • AWESOME

  • hi is that a hammond b3 ? if so do you have any sample i could up load regards

  • Nicely played! One of the greatest Hammond riffs ever! I've just got hold of a Hammond 9822k, looking forward to learning some stuff on it. :)

  • I dig it when someone is spot on when doing a cover, and also is humble about his playing and encouraging to others. Good man.

  • NICE

  • That was funky

  • Booker t would love it-true to from, Thanks.

  • IS IT IN THE KEY OF F?

  • @mushr00mhelmet

    I believe it's in E, I may be wrong

  • @mushr00mhelmet It's in the key of F minor (Ab major)

  • @dtimm612

ah yeah... i was learning it on G for a while then switched to F because it sounded more like the music video... just needed to make sure.

  • Nice !!

  • This is by far the best cover of the song on youtube. I am just about to get a hammond organ and i was wondering if you used music for this or learnt it by ear. I might be able to copy what your playing but music would help me loads.

Once again a great cover :)

  • i want this played at my funeral

  • @bertieG9 me too :L

  • Booker T was sixteen when he wrote that. Steve Cropper, the guitarist, was convinced it was a hit and took a dub to Sun Records where he had former Elvis guitarist Scotty Moore make an acetate. Steve then rushed to a local Memphis radio station and had the DJ, who was a friend, play the acetate. The phone lines lit up.The keyboard used was an old Hammond M-1 spinet organ. It had an octave and a half worth of plastic foot pedals with an eight inch speaker at the knee instead of a Leslie speaker.

  • Yeah, man!

That organ sounds nice (and you're playing, too).

  • there is several posted but this is the only one that sounds right. You have to make a tutorial.

  • best one yet

  • simply great

  • nyc

  • One of several already posted maybe, but your version is the first I've found where the bass part is played like on the record! The best way I can manage to explain it is: the first black key that is pressed in the bass part is supposed to be at an "off-beat" in the shuffle rhythm, just like you're doing. I'll study this, thanks!

  • dude you are really good on the organ. i want to learn this song so bad because it is just one of the best organ songs ever, and you did a really good job with your cover.

  • Yes!...you've got that feeling ı¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬ı

  • Possibly the coolest thing I have ever seen.

  • really nice, great version.

  • just great... very good

  • Comment removed

  • That would be cool if somebody played this while at church.

  • I want it played at my funeral in a church.

  • @dragonpullman I'm going to one day.... one day....

  • @dragonpullman haha that would b awesome. im taking organ lessons and my teacher always wants me to play boring crappy church music. i love playing this on the organ.

  • @lolipop123654 St. Mary's in Laurel, Maryland might need you in the future then.

  • nice!!

  • ++++

  • Best Homemade Version i've seen here yet

  • not bad fo' a white boy.

  • LoL

  • nice jamming !

  • Thanks everyone for watching and for the really nice comments. I'm sure many of you could play it better trust me it's the Hammond, it's a forgiving instrument and it makes you sound good ;-)

    Happy Holidays!

  • @dtimm612 Dude, don't be hard on yourself, you took it and made it yours.

  • Fantastic!

  • keep on rockin luv the sound

  • Yes suh!

  • A really great version!

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • super

  • hey mate thats the cover! other versions do not get any closer

    nices keyboards

  • VERY nice.

  • Thanks man. I've checked out several of your tutorials and they really help.

  • AWESOME!!!!!

  • Wow man nice

  • Best cover on here

  • Sounds pretty well spot on to me.

  • Well done, but you should use the percussion second harmonic instead of third.

  • Very nice!! I tried learning to play the organ for the last 40 years but could never get my hands to play different chords at the same time. I envy you. Thanks for sharing your talent.

  • u suk then

  • hahahahah

  • thank you

  • hey can i please get the notes please

  • exellextant

  • this is the best one on youtube

  • very nice. thanks from Brasil.

  • Very Well Played on the Organ!!!

  • What a pleasure ! ! ! Best Wishes ! ~ from Seattle

  • Your contribution is the best on youtube. I especially like you left hand playing. That's exactly how it is done on the record. Can't you put together a guide, playing slowly and showig your hands. That would be helpful to a lot of people...

    Thanks a lot!

  • Waaw I love it...

  • good job dude

  • for that matter in the blues

  • I love it!

  • Not bad. It's not easy to play this song by ear, although it may look simple. There are some videos on keyboardmag. I think there is no better lesson than that ; )

  • Yeah at keyboardmag they have a video of Booker T. himself explaining how to play it. The only problem is that Booker played it differently every time. So what he plays in the video isn't the same as what he played back on the 60s single.

But this video is very good! Once I get a video camera I'll post my own try at this song.

  • You have done good job. Young folks don't put this tune with a movie or anything else it stands alone. One of the great instrumentals of my time.

  • Yeah, this song is great because of itself, not because of a movie in which it is used!

One of these days' I'll post a video of my own interpretation... but I don't have a good camera.

  • Its The Tune from the birdseye advert

  • Love booker T. and the way you do it also.. awesome

  • Este organista foi quem chegou mais perto de Booker T. Nas notas e no ritmo. Curioso é que apesar de também ser um Hammond B3 o som não é o mesmo que Booker tira.

    adalberto

  • Nice Hammond

  • BRAVO

  • Ahhh, this was pure awesomeness! =) Nice!

  • You're all dumb for relating this song to movies and commercials when you could be discussing the amazing band that wrote this song: Booker T. and the MGs. And by the way, the sand lot was a great movie, but it wasn't the best ever, not even by a long shot.

  • was one of the best for childhood memories. that and home alone 1 and 2

  • you're all dumb for relating it to a commercial when it was in the best movie ever.

    sandlot.

in the scene where the tigers roll up and they have the arguement

  • dude. you rule.

  • There is a swedish commersial with this song ;P

  • an english one too

  • what commercial?

  • its a supermarket commercial, i cant remember what for but i have seen it and i saw it yesturday.

  • great

  • ........wow O.O

  • Good jop,, I can play that on the bass,,

  • Great Goin there. This one is not all that easy to do well without backup and as a solo. Your B-3 needs a reverb unit, but that was a common problem when we took of the Hammond cabinets and add the Leslies. Great going keep up the good work. . . .

  • tat was savage!!! :D

  • can you send me the notes? this is awesome

  • as denzel said in America Gangster 'my nigga'

    very good

  • This is beyond excellent!

  • Great job. Wish I could play keys.

  • dtimm612 what are you using for drawbar settings in this video?

  • It'd be 444400000, with 2nd perc for the solos.

  • you got it best on utube bud.

  • Gooooood.....

and what a beautiful instrument you have there.

    cheers!

  • Nice sound, dtimm. I like your way of playing the left hand Ab just before the down beat -- that is, on the "2 and" in swing time. I've played this many times over the years and have always used my right hand for that particular beat of the measure.

By the way, your B3 is sure in a lot better shape than mine. Mine's a 1957 model that I bought around 1968.

    Rock on!

  • Oh dear God... it's a B3... Or an RT3 if you have the pedal board too. *drool*

Great vid, but the angle the camera is at isn't really conducive to learning the song, as it's difficult to tell what's going on. Could you make a tab and send it to me in a message? That'd be great. I know it's not a hard song... just getting hung up on some stuff.

Great vid though! Wonderful to see it played on its proper instrument! :)

  • What are the slide settings, and what are you chording with your right hand?

  • you make it look easy! well done

  • Its great but I think you should speed it up and play it with some heart and soul

  • you have no idea what your talking about buddy ......

  • Speed is absolutely fine. It is a little sterile, though.

  • Forgot to add that it's still a job very well done!

  • that's excellent!

  • very nice , well played , enjoyed that a lot x x x

  • Nicely done.

  • Tuuuuneeeee man! Well done! Buzzy!

  • best one ive heard on youtube except from original

  • One of the better versions I've heard on YouTube, apart from the original!!

  • Out of all the "how to's" on how to play this song yours sounds the most correct specifically the intro. All the others seem to be missing a note or two in that part.

  • It's because Atlantic (who bought out Stax masters) lost the intro to the tape! All versions after the original US (pale blue/black label) Stax 7" and the UK London/Atlantic 7" and first press LPs have that into, but all later versions fade up quickly! Tragic, but true!
