We used to have a caliphate but since the Ottoman empire was driven out of existence so were the caliphates. But across moderate Muslims across the globe, Al Qaeda and Taliban are just terrorist groups and gangs. And most non-Muslims nowadays know that these groups are extremists and do not represent Muslims. Sure right after 9/11 people were scared but now they know better.

Its a mess only the muslems can sort out at the grass roots level.
