It's really sad how this iconic, quintessential and beautiful sounding british amp is now having it long and proud reputation wrecked by korg who now own vox. These amps all ways were made in england and were top notch quality and now they are shit all made in China & Vietnam! They still stick union jacks all over the brandinding... PISS TAKERS!
Nice review, although it doesn't go much into clean sounds. I read somewhere it's a similar amp to Peavey's classic 20, which might mean it doesn't go too loud before overdriving.
Seems to have a surprising amount of headroom for a 15 Watter. The AC30 was very loud for a 30 Watter so I guess that makes sense. It really depends on the speaker used.
I'm looking for a new amp i'm looking for a step up from a practice amp. I mainly play at home but sometimes i'll play a small venue. I play rock/alternative music mainly and i have a strat but i'm gonna buy a les paul pretty soon. I basically want a decent sound that can still piss off the neighbors. If you have any suggestions they would be much appreciated.
Which model Vox cab have you got that thing running through? The Night Train sounds amazing but as its Vox I would expect no less! they really are awesome amps!
I have the Vox AC15C1, which is 15 watts, too, and it is way too loud to play fully cranked unless I want the local police showing up every 15 minutes. But you can also use pedals to help push your amp at lower volumes. Or you can get an Electro-harmonix headphone amp ($45) that is designed to run off of your pedal board and use that for quiet practice.
@minedarea ...15 watts in an amp that's most enjoyable when played at higher output volume is very loud in the house and IMO too loud for the average households comfort ( talking about the wife here, or parents whichever is your case, even my kids..." can you turn that down a little bit ! " ). I have an AC4TV8 which is a perfect house amp, keeps everybody happy volume wise and is still capable of getting the " can you turn that down a little bit " on the 4 watt setting!
Sounds Great!!! I'm in the market for a Nightrain 50H - What concerns me with this video though is that you maybe giving people the wrong Idea Seeings that you have a 15watt Amp Head Mic'd up giving the wrong impression of Tone and Volume available to the Player that decides to buy the 15watt head!!!! maybe you could do another Demo Video without the amp being mic'd up. It's a great amp series and has even I admit more features and tone than the Marshalls. - do a 50H/Cab demo too
@ProGuitarShopDemos What he means to say is that he wants mute guitar amp demos in black and white, otherwise the differences in tone will mislead you
The demos are both good and appreciated, but there is something to be said for setting a mic back a few feet or more away.
It's not about getting a good recording tone but rather recreating how the amp sounds, acoustic factors vary but are always there,up close doesn't sound as true as a good condenser mic positioned back a few feet.
@TheRedGypsies Soo.... they shouldent mic it so no one can hear it? Your comment made no sense, you cant tell any amps volume through a video. If you want it to sound louder, turn up your computer speakers!
@TheRedGypsies How are we meant to hear the amplifier at all if they don't use a microphone?
Also, just as a rule of thumb, you need about 10*the wattage for double the perceived volume. So your 50 watt head isn't going to be a whole lot louder than the 15 through the same speakers. You're just going to get more clean headroom.
They don't mic them because they are quite.they mic them because camera's do not have good mics. 15 watts tube is plenty loud to play with a band. 50 is more than enough,
@TheRedGypsies Yeah man! Nothing sounds better than a recording of an amp that hasn't been recorded by a mic! Freaking brilliant! Outstanding thought!
@TheRedGypsies how would he record the sound if it wasn't mic'd? would he build a set of these heads into a huge daisy chain around the world so we could all listen to it?
@TheRedGypsies Haha. I'll spare you the rich succulent scorn I want to include in my comment. Only because it is midnight and I've done bad things things today/ How old are ya mate? How else is are we supposed to hear what he's playing?
[3:36] Modest Mouse did a piece with very a similar tune and rhythm; yet as to how my opinion stands, I like the tone on this far better! Exceptionally good performance. Bravo!!!
No it isn't but neither is any Vox tube amp except for the single ended Ac4.
Even the AC30 and AC15 which may be biased to operate like a "class A" amp when played cleanly are in fact class class AB amps and this fact is audible when you crank it because that spongy response it demonstrates owes in part to the class AB operation.
Beware of the "class A" sales jargon,.Most makers will label AB amps as class A if the amp is biased on the warmer side.
ok so i play through a line 6 head and a crate cab.. i bought the head used and was rly thinking about trading it back and buying a new head... do you think the night train would be a nice choice?
rly looking for a good clean channel and turn it up :)
does anyone know if you could play a small jazz gig with this amp? like, can you keep it clean while still being loud enough for a small gig? for example, the fender blues junior (also 15 watts) sounds great with my joe pass guitar and works great for gigs (unfortunately the distortion on a blues junior isn't all that great in my opinion) so i want to know if i could play both rock and jazz with this amp. thanks :)
Excellent video. Can't thank you enough for your high quality work. Because I had a hardon to buy one of these. And they sound like shit. Ready to crash and burn, indeed. Poop. Back to the tone hunt.
do you think you can run the night train through one of the valvetronix series amps? or do you think it's better to get an entire new cabinet as well?
Hey Andy, I was just wondering if this amp can be loud enough to be heard over a drummer with a 1x12 cab.
Also, did you use any other pedals between 0:12 and 0:42? I loved that tone, it's basically my thing, but it'd be nice to know if you used anything extra. And just one more question. Do you think an Ibanez ts9 would make the amp sound a lil' heavier?
I'm split between this and the Mesa Boogie TA15. If this amp is loud enough for a band get up, imma get it for sure.
@lalidado From that comment i think everyone wold think you know shit about amps...that or most likely you are about to acquire your first tube amp. No pdels in the video...and for a band even a 5 watt amp would do...if the band is doing things right.
@GuitarM0nkey nighttrain over tiny terror because of its clean tones and both over egnator, i did not like it .... ibought the night train and love it
@JaysalP i find the tiny terror has no decent cleanness, the vox generally has a broader range correct me if you think differently :) i would reccomend the egnator rebel 20 :))
hi there proguitarshop . Just to congratulate you : i have the night train , got it recently and your demo sounds exactly like the amp (i use monitor headphones , too)
Yours sound a little better because of high volume and way better cab than mine, but seriously , not that a world of a difference :)
so , props to you guys for that SERIOUS sound quality !
how do the excellent VOX speaker does affects the tone ? how's the tone on a "'regular" 1x12 cab ? (with celestion greenback , i think) and how does this compares to the blackheart handsome devil ?
I shoulda just gotten this and a cheap 2x12 cab... Instead I shelled out for the TT combo, and left without many options... gah. Saved more money, and I wouldnt be desperate to find a cab so I can play gigs...
Just the kind of demo I like; a full range of amp tones with different guitars, instead of endless 'Last Saturday before Christmas at the guitar shop' widdling and thrashing - thanks, I'll have one.

how do the excellent VOX speaker does affects the tone ? how's the tone on a "'regular" 1x12 cab ? (with celestion greenback , i think) and how does this compares to the blackheart handsome devil ?

I shoulda just gotten this and a cheap 2x12 cab... Instead I shelled out for the TT combo, and left without many options... gah. Saved more money, and I wouldnt be desperate to find a cab so I can play gigs...

Just the kind of demo I like; a full range of amp tones with different guitars, instead of endless 'Last Saturday before Christmas at the guitar shop' widdling and thrashing - thanks, I'll have one.
