@CanadaDank Its Tool-Assisted. That essentially means he can control what happens frame-by-frame on a computer. Its not humanly possible to do this with a normal controller at normal game speed.

@88bastey A bot wouldn't be able to do this run. As the bot will randomly test input and see if it ends up in a good result. It will be billions of combinations for every second. It can't be done.

As I said, you play this with an emulator. The emulator has several tools that you may use when you TAS. This includes slow motion gameplay (Called Frame Advance), where you for each frame decide which input to do, as well as save states and rerecording features. And all that input is made by a human.

The bot gets the exact coordinates from the programmer where it has to move to, when to do action x y z. etc. The game flow in Super Mario is ALWAYS the same, there aren't any random things

If you play the game normally on a console, you choose what input is made while you play. When you make a TAS, you do the exact same thing, only difference is that you slow down the gameplay and use save states. You explained the right process, sort of, but it isn't a bot that you give these commands to, it is the game. And that is a huge difference than if you program a bot to make the input for you.

If it would have been a TAS but said to be a realtime run done on console, it would have been fake. Huge difference right there.

In a TAS you record input files and when you load a state everything that you did beyond that save-state is re-recorded to look like there are no mistakes (which is the reason why TAS are purely for entertainment)
