Why are they refered to as anti-tank grenade launchers? (specificly, the grenade part) Does that mean they don't have a shaped charge or just that they're filled with explosives or what?
It's a term that came about in the early 20th century, when it really was a grenade charge attached to a rocket motor. The name stuck, and it still is used today.
@AdoreYouInAshXI Of course it doesn't. Because it's not a javelin. It's a M136. Just as the title says. Be thankful that stupidity doesn't hurt. You'd be in a world of pain otherwise.
@Omsbon Since Mr. AdoreYouInAshXI deleted his comment that I replied to, I'll repost it for the sake of entertainment (sorry if I don't get it exactly right). Here it is:
"What about just answering the question and not being a fucking smartass douchebag? Nowhere in the title does it say the word javelin. Fucker."
The vain stuff Mr. AdoreYouInAshXI wrote about himself on his channel makes the whole thing even funnier.
@rcpdc77 If I'd only get money every time that kind of comment is posted. Rocket propelled GRENADE. The M136 is referred to as grenade launcher in the FM 3-23.25 and other official sources. If you don't like it, then it's not my problem.
@Thermoman95 no, it is not "and" RPG... because its not a Rocket Propelled GRENADE, its a rocket with an explosive warhead. now lets see, the 95 at the end of your name suggests to me that you are; A) 13-14 years old. B) "And" idiot for even using your birthday in your name, which is also probably incorporated into your password, and the combination of both A and B = C which is you don't know jack shit about anything so shut your dirty horse mouth.
@Thermoman95 Ok, so lets see here, this is you before i ripped you, "It is and rpg" (actual quote) and here is you after you're life got shat on "yea i know its not a rpg". Somebody has a case of the flip-flops. Well in any case you don't really know shit, or "more than i did at 14", because at 14 i was already looking into taking a practice ASVAB. Watching the military channel doesn't count kid. peace
@CardboardTurtle to be fair, i'll tell you, it can be loaded with several different types of rounds, HEDP, is the same type thats used in the m230 (no not the m203) so yes a frag round can be loaded, however, the round most commonly used, considering this isn't an anti-personnel, its an anti-armor, it will 90% of the time be loaded with HEAT, or high explosive anti tank. which is NOT a frag round, but a armor penetrating warhead.
Yeah,...but that's always been a problem with (easily) man-portable AT weapons. If you're going against a tank you're better off shooting from the sides or above. But if it's a lighter AFV then you can try for the frontal kill. And there's alot of folks out there still using main battle tanks built on 60's designs.
Videos games? The US Army training that I received for this weapon told us, That this is a shoulder fired rocket. This is because the motor for the warhead is engaged for farther than 200m. An RPG has it's motor engaged out to 200m or less, Giving it a Lob effect to increase range. But the AT-4 is always a direct fire weapon no matter what range you're firing it at. You cannot arc this weapon due to the pressure sensitive warhead. Hows that for video games?
The majority of the blast takes place withing the target. The warhead is designed to project the blast and spalling inward to kill the targets occupants, And equipment.
And yes it's a Rocket...I could tell you every single thing you want to know about an AT4, I carried this pile of shit in the field and I hate it. haha...but I suppose it has it's reasons...
OP is not correct, the AT4 or M136 operates on the "recoilless rifle" principal where it functions like a cannon only the rear is open to allow the blast to shoot backwards so the shooter feels no recoil.
The projectile flies under its own inertia at about the speed of a .45 pistol bullet, no rocket. This is much faster than an RPG-7 so has a longer range and is even good against moving targets.
The projectile of neither M136 nor RPG 7 are called "grenades", rocket propelled or not.
Technically the AT4 is not a rocket as it uses a packed powder charge that burns out all within the tube.
The AT4 projectile does not have a "rocket engine" and is referred to as a recoilless rifle on the Saab Bofors website. In fact every source describes it as a recoilless design.
It seems the US Army used the rocket and grenade terms only as a matter of convenience.
The velocity in relation to RPG7 is also accurate.
The maximum velocity of the RPG-7 projectile is 300 m/s vs. 290 m/s for the M136. The RPG's round is indeed called a grenade, while the weapon itself is referred to as a grenade launcher. That's what the G in RPG stands for.
RPG-7 maximum speed is very different from AT4's sustained 290m/s from the muzzle.
fas(.)org hosts a manual on RPG-7 where it is apparent the grenade only briefly reaches 300m/s velocity between 100-200m. Within 100m it is much slower.
M136 fires 290m/s from the muzzle and by hitting a 250m target within a second, it sustains the velocity to make it potentially much more accurate, especially against moving targets. With a weight penalty of course.
acctually RPG stands for Ruchnoy Protivotankovyy Granatomyot, which is russian for Hand-held Anti-tank Grenade launcher, not rocket propelled grenade like most people think
@Omsbon i heard that RPG actually is russian for something else and doesnt mean rocket propelled grenade. i mean think about it, why would they make it stand for something in english when they dont speak that language
@MrKyleSchick I never said it stood for rocket-propelled grenade. RPG stands for ruchnoy protivotankoviy granatomet which means hand-held anti-tank grenade launcher.
Oh cmon with the technical shit. As if you going to get soldiers saying "fire the recoiless rifle!" Its close enough to be called a rocket. Getting the technical info correct would be the last thing on mind while there are bullets flying over your head.
Well when I say "Feels no recoil" I mean feels no where near all the recoil he should feel for having such a large projectile shoot out the front at near the speed of sound.
It is deceptively simple physics, each reaction has an equal and opposite reaction.
M136 is likely not a perfect recoiling principal... but try blocking off the rear of the M136 and firing it, the recoil would rip your shoulder off. So you can see why it is labelled "recoilless".
haha i know what the concept is, and i know it would not be possible to fire such a weapon with out backblast, thats why im just playing around...just saying that sucker kicks. Its a pretty old weapon.
this is a big proof that we in sweden are great weapon manufactures, thats how we have become a such rich country without ghettos and stuff, really, you in usa get good weapons from us to fight war with, and we get money and evry1 is happy :P ... .. that was american troops wasnt it? :D

I agree, who cares in combat, you could call it a bazooka and I couldn't care as seconds count and it is pretty clear what you mean.
But this is far from a combat scenario, so might as well call a spade a spade and not misunderstand how the M136 works.
