I believe this animal is showing stress not because it came from a circle, but in fact it is left in a box was nothing to stimulate their mind, it needs space,trees, running water, thing to play with, a place to hide.If you were locked in a room with nothing in it for years wouldn't you go crazy?
The bear in Berlin came from a circus, I think her name's Tosca, so she probably started doing this in the circus and can't break the hebit. Can't be Berlin zoos fault, because none of the others there do it. This is sad tho :-(
I was in Berlin in July 2007 and they had a polar bear doing the EXACT same thing at the zoo there. My wife and I were both extremely worried. Does anyone know if this bear was transferred there? The movements were identical.
i do not work at the zoo, just visiting, it is not only the lack of things to do for this bear but also very bad conditions of the water which is too hot, it turns green and it looks like a swamp with floting plants all around
if you work at a zoo, seeing an animal "pace" is not a good sign. enrichment would be good for this animal. i do not see any enrichment in this exhibit. this type of thing is what gives zoos a bad reputation.

This bear needs a MUCH LARGER enclosure and maybe some friends to play with. This is nothing but a PRISON for this animal.

Sad Bear it is suffering from captivity illness, It is suffering, the enclosure doesnt even faintly resemble its wild habitat...
