  • I saw him in Auburn, Alabama Looooong time ago.

  • Andrés Segovia. hombre amado y odiado a la vez; yo mismo me he encontrado en ambos bandos, sin embargo es impresionante verlo tocar tan lucidamente bien a esa edad.. increible!!

  • Inoubliable !

  • Sorry to be a debby downer here but I think this is not one of Segovia's best moments. The left hand is clearly suffering (there are a lot of squeaking notes and a few missed altogether) and the sound is not as good as it was when he was a little younger. Also I think the intonation of the guitar could be a little better. This would never work if he wasn't Segovia!

That said, I'm a great fan, but I think sometimes people selectively listen to the good aspects only!

  • Now THIS is a guitar master...not some asshole wanking around in the minor pentatonic scale

  • .............shhhh.............just listen!

  • i just played this last week on an examination, got a 6 (norwegian A)

  • i love it that the crowd goes wild after hes done

  • Yes. LOL! Segovia is my favorite guitarist! I missed a chance to see him in New Orleans once, possible the last time he was in the U.S. It would have been a 5 hour trip; looking back I should have crawled down there if I had to, in order to see the great maestro!

  • OK...WHO COUGHED 0:33

  • With a little more time and practice, this guy could be really good!!!

  • @CharlieHend... lol?

  • As a teenager, I actually saw the great man on stage. Flat feet, great big gardner's hands - and music to lift the heart straight out your body.

How wonderful that he is here on Youtube.

  • I wish I had been a little older to go to a Segovia live performance, and when I was a little older, he had left is... So sad. But I've found a good number of CD and DVD's and sit for hours listening to him. The grand master, God bless your soul!

  • That tuning change 1:20 is insane.

  • @wsmcasey13 The old guy could still move. Most people are not even living at that age, let alone concertizing and pulling off tuning adjustments on the fly.

  • WOW nuff said

  • Did Somebody mention Rolling Stone Top 100? lol - Thats a bit like including Britneh in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Come on man... Guys like Rory Gallagher didn't even get a mention and yet Joan Jett made the list.... No Paco - The greatest living Guitarist, Not even Al DiMeola..... What a Joke!!!!

  • @zooreeka i know paco deserves alot more credit then what he gets

  • Comment removed

  • Without skipping a beat, he even grabs a tuning peg in mid-song!

  • Playing at that age is just amazing.

  • @albertoz34 - getting out of bed at that age is impressive. I saw him play in Chicago in 1986 when he was 93 yrs old. I was a college sophomore at the time.

  • Kids, this is how a master plays. Note the dynamics that Segovia brings to the instrument - beautiful inflection and spot-on timing. A performance to behold.

  • Anyone who dislikes this is an A@#hole! Period.

He still outplays anyone commenting here in this clip!

  • Un Maestre !! Her Segovia y su amor a la musica, en especial la bella de curvas de madera barnizadas con la mas elegante artimaña,, Gracias Adios existe la guitarra

  • it's that dude from ocean's eleven. if you scroll across the bar with your mouse it makes him rock out real fast. nanananananananananan. go ocean's eleven guy go! nananananananananananann

  • Don't be too hard on them. The Rolling Stone latest list of top 100 guitar players does not mention Segovia, Montoya, Esteban, or any picker from Nashville.

  • Supremo! Me arrepio quando escuto Villa-Lobos numa execução tão perfeita!

  • He is the Grand Master of all the Maestros. We owe his great respect and gratitude for all that he did to promote the guitar to a fully accepted classical instrument.

  • Segovia will always be the Godfather of classical guitar! It's no wonder why all of the living great guitar masters pay total homage to his greatness!

  • This makes me not hate old people so much.

  • hahah yeah men @BananaDePijamaLilas

  • ...and the acoustic guitar wasnt even Villa Lobos primary instrument..

  • Fantástico!!!

  • master master master master

  • @rashxD - by james hetfield

  • 63 fãs de lady Gaga...

  • King of guitar classic

  • number one

  • Not once did his left hand thumb show itself behind the neck

  • @fridrikur Hahah true! But why should it?

  • @salomon9595 I am just impressed that he obey the rules he set himself for his students. The left hand thumb must always stay behind the neck and support the hand.

  • @fridrikur obeys

  • @fridrikur I know that. But my I meant more like why did you expect the master of classical guitar to not obey the "rules"? He, if someone, should be aware of it!

  • @salomon9595 Again I was just impressed

  • @salomon9595 I felt like acknowledging his talet, like bowing my head for the master in awe, that is how I felt writing that comment and because he wrote about the thumb in a book

  • @fridrikur talent

  • @fridrikur Where else would it go? I could never play (when I played years ago) without my thumb behind the neck.

  • @carolsea2 All players have the thumb behind the neck but very often it show itself above the neck when I see people play the instrument, and according to a comment from Segovia himself on playing classical guitar the thumb should never show itself above the neck, that is why I wrote this, but apparently no one gets what I am saying.

  • @fridrikur While anything Segovia said about the instrument are words to listen to, no one way is correct or incorrect. He only says this because it's impossible to have leverage if your thumb is too high. While playing open chords, there nothing wrong with your thumb moving up, you don't need the leverage required for a barre. Otherwise yes, your thumb should be roughly in the middle of the back of the neck, increasing all leverage. Although disparity between positions is not wise.

  • @yarful Well said. I agree. The thumb helps with barred chords.

  • Guitars always sound a bit detuned, more or less, a guitar cannot be played perfectly in tune. Therefore in the Olde Timez guitars and lutes were not allowed in church services.

  • @MucusFelidae I'm not so sure lutes (there were no 'guitars') were not allowed in "church" services due to them being out of tune so much as they were simply impractical when faced against a ground shaking pipe organ or piano.

It wasn't until Les Paul gave us the electric pickup and amplifiers which allowed 'guitars' to front line during the Big Band era along side trombone and saxophone solos. Until then, they were primarily used for rhythm and vocal practice at low volumes.

  • Grande!! :)

  • Maestro Andres.

  • Gracias a toda la gente que no es española pero es capaz de apreciar a un gran Maestro como Andrés.

Qué pasa con la gente de España?..camaradas; sabemos todos quién es el Maestro Segovia no?

  • Ahhh Yes.. I remember now why I watch youtube... to see talent like this :))

Thumbs up if you agree ??

  • @michaelamiles BOY DO I AGREE!

  • Such finesse

I can't believe that some people think they can tell if the guitar is in tune or not from this wonky old video tape..

  • hope i can still play like that when im 92

  • He plays great, but I personally think that piece is awful.

  • I grew up listening him playing, so what can i say? The best Bach Performance was played by him!

  • If I can play half as good as that when I'm his age I'd be as giddy as a school girl meeting Justin Bieber... If I could play that good now I'd be just as happy, more so probably.

  • Utterly astounding that a 90-year old man could retain such a command of the guitar in public performance! One of the greatest concertizers of all time!!

  • Awsome... every day i listen it..

  • What a great talent. He was productive so late in his life. Very inspiring.

  • Y ahí unas Manos que toda la vida se dedicaron a la Guitarra. ¡MAESTRO!

  • Sorry I am not sure who this guy is. I only made the comment that his guitar is out of tune, and I suggested to the guy he use a guitar tuner on stage. I use them.... can't live without them!

  • @TheIndianDoctor You may want to Google him before questioning his performance. He's arguably the best-known guitarist in his genre. The only reason he isn't mentioned with the likes of Van Halen or Hendrix is because his style wasn't as mainstream.

  • @BrianTKessler You may want to Google the science of tone and frquency, and their relative properties. There are plenty of guitarists on Youtube by the way.... open your ears, open your mind.

  • @TheIndianDoctor I've heard quite a few of them. Youtube and the Internet are great learning tools.

  • @TheIndianDoctor You are not sure who Segovia is!!!!! Without doubt the finest classical guitarist of all time, he pioneered many of the methods we still use today and saved the guitar at a time when it was considered "just" a folk instrument, this is towards the end of his career and i can assure you he IS NOT out of tune but the tape is a bit stretched, the musicality, technique and feeling that a this 90 year old genius brings to the performance brings tears to the eys.

  • @skindancer01 Hold on I am going to play the tune again...

    I'll let you know.

  • @skindancer01 OK I listened and I concur he is out of tune... it's not his guitar. I notice he thuds or "misses" a few marks, but this is why we practice. I am really encouraged that this guy is still out there doing gigs. Would love to hear him do a Simon and Garfunkel song or some "Dust in the Wind" type thing.

  • @TheIndianDoctor You are taking the piss aren't you???

This is SEGOVIA we are listening to, i presume you play the guitar?, if you do then then i guarantee that some if not all of your phrasing and tonality owes a debt to Segovia whether you realise it or not. Tragically he passed away in '87 so this was one of his last ever performances.

That whirring you hear is Segovia spinning in his grave with indignation at the idea of playing a cover of a pop song.

  • True genius at work!!!

  • biutiful...

  • El Maestro. Amore.

  • Picaso's ''old guitarist''

  • Great master...

  • Il Maestro....Grande, Grandissimo, Immenso....

  • el maestro !

  • The technique may be flagging, but no one brings the mojo like 'Dre, even at this late stage in his career.

  • Es un placer siempre de escuchar al maestro!

  • Es un placer escuchar al maestro!

  • Ah, always wonderful to listen to the Maestro. Thank you Bernie.

  • I can understand all the vile comments that have been made about this performance because the people who have made them are steeped in a fetid swamp of ignorance and stupidity as these moronic individuals expect a nonegenarian to perform with the agility of a person in their mid - thirties. But that's the price we all pay for this forum because there is free admission here for all the bullies and thugs of cyberspace who infect others with the stench of their foul language.

  • @bernieholland775 I sign suscribe and cheer to that comment!

  • @bernieholland775 I hope your comment wasn't directed toward me...

  • @bernieholland775 Please do not be too concerned with the bullies and negativity. After all, is is all they can do, at the limit of their ability, it is all they know.

  • The master lives!

    Thanks!

    REV18

  • tune your fuckin guitar in grandad !! went the cry from the back row

  • I love this song.

  • I am sorry I have never seen (and heard) live Andres Segovia. I am glad to have seen, live, John Willaims, Christopher Parkening, and Carlos Montoya.

  • @sparkymaxis where is the community college you talk about?

  • Real pros tune their guitar while playing =D 1:18

  • When was this recorded? He already died in 1987, that's why I ask...

  • ...and corrects his tuning in a nano-second at 1:18!

  • @guitluvr Unreal.

  • @guitluvr the beauty of becoming familiar with an instrument over the course of years and decades, and eventually truly mastering it.

  • @guitluvr

My teacher learned with segovia and he told me that because he was so old sometimes he forgot the pieaces and he tuned the guitar to remember

    RIP

  • The hall full of people, he looks like he's playing in his bedroom :D

  • Merita di scomparire, gente come lui ha rovinato molte generazioni di musicisti.

He deserves to disapper, he ruined generations of musicians.

    For information, tell me.

  • master!..

  • look at the size of the audience all to see him

  • you are exprienced .no?

  • they have a chance video tape Segovia and they show the damn audience. Who gives a shit about the audience. Dumb ass cameramen.

  • @Tauptu This is to show that it was actually filmed in the Teatro Real, and not a TV Studio; Europeans are very difficult to convince about locations, since they are used to seeing anything recreated in a TV Studio. TV from the 70's was just grand. And not everyone could have the whole stage of Teatro Real [Royal Theatre] all alone to themselves. This was a big achievement.

  • i hate how these new fucking emo kids play that acoustic rock bullshit!!!

    this is the real shit!!!!

    segovia!!!!

  • god

  • Yep.. sure was out of tune. He really should use an electronic guiatr tuner. Make the investment if you're gonna gig. Guitar Center has them for $15.00.

  • @krsongs

    lmao at amateurs correcting segovia.

Did you hold your electric tuner up to the speakers to check him down to the hertz?

The ratio of sound between the strings sounded good enough to listen to for half a million people so your opinion is inert.

  • no seas prepotente

  • 1:18 i knew his guitar was a bit off tune, not until he tried tuning it real quick i realized i was correctomundo

  • Comment removed

  • Seems little some muffled notes in some spots, guitar out of tune or not intonated well. Keep practicing man! Use an eletronic tuner...they got em for classical guiatrs.

  • @krsongs This must be your first time hearing "The Master" or you would not have written what you did. Second, he passed away in 1987. now he has perfect tuning no matter what.

  • @fingerstylefan I commented on what I saw and heard. I am not sure who the Master is, but I would reckon' that a "Master" of this sport would at least have his guitar in tune. A guitar out of tune is unlistenable.

  • @krsongs What I was commenting on is you were talking about him in present tense when he left us a long time ago. Looks like he was in his late 80's or so here and on his worst day still played better than most of us on our best day.

  • ANYONE who dislikes The Master is nothing more than a HATER. Wish you were that good ......

  • the master

  • For any who wonder about the power of music to transform the heart and soul of a person watch this old man be transformed by the music and hear the music transform this elderly gentleman into a fountain of life.

  • So many guitarists dont even know what this man did for the instrument they love.

  • This man had forgotten more about music than most will ever know and that is a fact.

  • Before people start slagging off this performance, saying that he's not as good as Parkening or Williams, be mindful of the fact that this performance was towards the end of his life so please exercise a bit of magnamimity here - and may I suggest that you listen to his 1938 recording of the Bach Chaconne (when Segovia was at the height of his powers) which completely eclipses anyone elses performance in terms of technique, musicianship and artistry. He deserves the highest respect.

  • @bernieholland775 Let's not also forget that Parkening was taught by Segovia too!

  • @bernieholland775 Though many young people really don't know who he was but the remarkable thing is that Segovia is undisputed as the most important player of the 20th century.

  • @bernieholland775 Art is an expression. Not an absolute statement. I pray that others speak as highly of me once I have passed on.

  • @bernieholland775

Too much emphasis on performance and appearance in today's music, an unfortunate reflection of today's ever-more shallow society. I'm glad I bumped into this video performance of Segovia

  • @bernieholland775 Who could possible say anything negative about Mr. Segovia? At his worst he was one of the best that ever lived, and I agree, at his best he was untouchable...

  • Un commiato che ci dovrebbe far meditare...a tutti.

  • the greatest guitar teacher ever!!! the one who made the guitar classical organ!

the one who transposed all bach's works to guitar. all the great guitarist parkening bream williams was his students. that's why he deserves our respect.

  • @ShamrockKitty Both were his student... Dipshit.

  • @tsaxfreak And the students hath surpassed the master... Shitdip.

  • he tunes his guitar while he is playing at 1:19.... what a boss. :)

  • Who said you need thin fingers to play the guitar

  • the genius i suppose , no one will surpass him ever.

  • One of thegreatest pioneers of classical guitarists

  • yep,the ole man did tune it! what an ear!! talk about multi tasking

  • And you already know why he isnt in Guitar H. ^^

  • A Melodic Master! Should be in the Hall of Fame for this-!

  • He doesn't look like a guitarist but damn what a guitarist he is!

  • @hamajuggle by your comment, you didn't know this fantastic musician. hard to believe... well, if there is some useful on web, is a chance, when you're tired to watch crap proper to teen's brains, to find out some new for you, acquire some knowledge. if you really like music , you just find one of great in all times on guitar. enjoy.

  • @blizzardtheory Yeah i thought I didn't know him, but I happened to recognize 'Asturias', a guy at school played it, as i recall. Beautiful music indeed... That's the great thing about Youtube, you sometimes great videos of masterpieces like this between all the garbage, but it's worth the searching. I discovered this man while reading the Django Reinhardt (amazing guitarist as well) on wikipedia. There was a small anekdote about mr. Segovia: he once asked Django where he could buy music sheets

  • @blizzardtheory not realizing his solos were all completely improvised :p

  • love those 12th fret harmonics at 2 min. so quick, crisp and precise!!

is it just me or does he have short finger nails on all but his thumb?

  • @afoolonahill Andres Segovia played with very short finger nails.

  • "a life spent for music is a life well spent"

  • 1:19

    so hard!

  • Florence, 1972, I was there, among the public, I will never forget those moments...

  • @MrDonjenaro OLD MAN!

  • @LLAME911 Antiguo sí, pero joven aún!

  • @MrDonjenaro Como supiste que yo hablo español? :o

  • @LLAME911 Con el legendario Segovia, su guitarra Ramirez, todo el mundo habla a español!

  • Maestro de Maestros!!! Bravo...

  • he did this on purpose. This song he plays has really deep meaning.

  • is this a parody?

  • Too sal tasso?

  • pure perfection

  • @123nosugar Not quite, a bit old here and possibly losing touch in one or two places, but a more human performance for that maybe?

  • @DHTCF That is where the perfection lies. In the beauty of imperfection.

  • I bet the whole piece was written just so he could do that thing at 0:47

  • I can't help but feel extremely inferior to this guy...

  • El señor Segovia fue realmente un virtuoso, un fenómeno de la Guitarra.... Pocos con su talento... Muchos que estamos apenas en pañales en la guitarra nos sentimos cohibidos cuando escuchamos su música.

  • .. i just hope ill be able to play a simple chord when i someday look like he does

  • i love you

  • Why dislikes? I wan´t to hear arguments!

  • @emilblaster some people simply wont accept that he (andres ) is better than they are...(Envy

    )

  • @emilblaster cos he's not playing the same power chord for 4 bars

  • @emilblaster Fools have no arguments
