I'v not played it. But something seems a little off. Battle speed & ship speed. Ship movement speed seems to lag as A slug. The ship is Light cruiser. No Photons? Saying that because as I watched it. Maybe I didn't notice. But there was a few openings when bird's shields down. And I didn't see any photons go off from light cruiser.
Is this a ranged star ship or a Melee class. He was close enough to hit the birds of prey with his 2 handed mace of eternal bloodletting. Apparently nobody misses in deep space. I failed to notice an errant shot. Of course, how are you going to miss each other when you are rubbing ship emblems.

That looks boring and isn´t plausable to the star trek universe. Not even entreprice E could stand that much bomparment even if would have been from outdated D12 bird of preys. There is one very old star trek game that had much more sense in space battle. Makers of this game should look it up. I truly hope that they pull this train around before it is too late.

I will try this next year(2011) when they will resolve many bugs and add new content. Cryptic was so reckless and hasty to release STO. I guess they were out of ideeas and turned to active players to implement new stuff in the game.

completely agree. I just recently got out of a 3 year streak of Eve online and gave this a shot. As I believe both are good, I'm still partial to eve, however in no way, shape, or form would i compare this to that. I just like the play style of eve better than I like it of this, however I think both are really great games. STO is completely worth it if you are a trek fan.

There is no choices as the ships captain. Your new ensign is your boss telling you what and how to do each episode. Ground combat is lame mid 80s style. The grind is boring. Not many different mobs. The loot system sucks. That pretty much covers it.
@Bramendor the ensign isent your boss, you ARE the boss, your the ships captain and u can customize yourself to whatever you want, you can even customise your ship and crew, maybe you shuld try it instead of reading what every1 else has put, theres a demo
The ensign is my boss. Yeah I can customize myself anyway I want. I can customize the ensign too. But aside from telling him how I want his skin color and face to look like I have no REAL control over him.
He tells me how to complete my missions. "We should beam down and check things out" As captain I should choose how to solve the episodes I am in.
The customization is great in the game. The ability to make meaningful choices isnt.
@Bramendor dude i have no idea what your talking about but your the captain of your own ship with the option to recruit crew members in your ship crew slots, science, tactical and engnineer, YOU have the choice of accepting missions or not of course u cant control them their npcs, but u can use their skills in battle, its like any other rpg, where you get 'pets' basically. You get quests in other online rpgs where you need to entire an area for example and kill 10 enimes and then report

You can add members to your crew. And once they join they tell you how to do missions you have accepted. I warp into a place for my mission, my ensign pops up on my screen and says "We should fight that ship!" Or "Scan the area" I dont have much choice in the matter. It feels like my new ensign is bossing me around.
Also the npcs giving me the quest can be lower rank than me. Some ensign will tell me to fly out and kill something. I should say "slow your roll. You fly out"
well remember you can compare even reading a book too playing baseball and eating apples too watching youtube vids so I guess you can compare STO and EVE too.
I am both a Trekie and hardened mmo FPS player. Rubbish previously. . . this game is brilliant. OK, as an mmo or shooter, just good but as a Trekie . . Fantastic. Developers have achieved almost the impossible, you ARE in Star Trek . . there is little or nothing that you can't do in this game compared to the films or TV series.
Compared to EvE - and despite appearences (i.e an unnecessarily cluttered UI) This game has the tactical depth of a spit puddle. As with Chamions online, unless you live within sight (or at least walking diastance) of the servers the lag is terrible.
Bought it, paid for an extra month,but cancelled subs 36 hours later.

well yes i would agree with you in some sense, however from my limiteted experiance with eve you there had to "mine" to get resources ? to me that was sooo boring in eve. i never got to do any combat i guess it could just be me,, but that was my experience with eve.
Last time I played Eve, it was tick based leveling. I had to wait about 4 months of signing on every 2 hours to train a new skill until finally I could use a missile launcher and attempt a mission... While the gameplay I loved, way too much investment into a game. Thou, if you could tell me similarities between Eve and STO...other then MMORPG in space? It's like when Conan came out, everyone said "Oh, it's just another Warcraft". Hell, Warcraft was just another Ultima Online at that point.

STO is actually a pretty decent game, I got it yesterday and played it for hours until I became a LT(jg). I was afraid it was gonna suck ass, but it's better than I expected.
this game looks great visually, but the gameplay (combat, at least) looks like crap. each has what 2-3 lasers and then torpedo's. so it;s fly slowly around while hitting 2-3 buttons. even in the large fleet scenario's you still arent doing anything.

Eve = spreadsheet online, means that there is no player interaction involved, you set your ship up then you click attack, whoever has the most skill points wins (WIth equal ships) and you cannot get the same amount of skill points of a player whos been online for 7 years, boring.
If ISK would have been real, like PED, EVE would have been an awesome online economy with the outer looks of a game. I would have "played" it. But losing so much time with EVE is pure nonsense.

I agree, there should be a penalty but not "EVE" like penalties. I want to play, not make a career out of a game( there is nothing more exciting than to sit in an asteroid field for three days mining). EVE is designed so you have to buy three months subs to get anywhere. I've seen some EVE pvp where 2 guys just sit there in one place and shoot at each other for hours on end.
Lol this is just Ensign and Closed beta, i hit Rear Admiral in Open Beta, the UI is better as is the combat faster, esp with more weapon slots and abilities, although some enhanced shields can take a while to drop its all a matter of strategy.

Yeah he doesn't use his buffs very often and he keeps chasing the enemy. When he sees that the klings gonna breach he doesn't try to get away from the explosion and his shields take a beating.
They might be long because its designed for more than one player im guessing. I think the tactics come from the ship type and how you prepare it. Then its pew pew time!

There are other missions that are not about combat. You have to level to be able to play more of them. I love Star Trek. I've been a fan for a very long time and I find the game to be lots of fun. I'm more of a DS9 fan than TNG. TNG series focused on non-combatant episodes 90% of the time. DS9 had combat about 85% of the time, which is what I liked better. I prefered DS9 over TNG simply because The Enterprise was like a space hotel. It was usually so happy and safe. DS9 showed true struggle.

However i hope the will chance the "Arcade mode"to the "real star trek mode" if the beta stay and go in retail (without change) i will not play it until the chance it to star trek feeling. I'm trying the Beta, and a couple of notes based on comments: (1) You CAN move in 3 dimensions, the player here is just thinking '2-dimensionally'. Mouselook movement is a more 3D approach; (2) This is longer than most, but the style is more "naval battle" not jets; (3) The challenge in combat is rotating shields, redist. power so they don't collapse, keeping in firing arc etc. So more strategic/sim playstyle vs fast fingers (but not hyper complex like EVE). I find that an entertaining mix

This is early in the game man. There are away missions, diplomatic missions, answering distress calls etc. The maker of this film has his ship setup for pull defense and his weapons are on minimum yield, which is why it is taking him ten years to kill something.

I love this game and think its the best space mmo out there. Eve Online and Star Trek Online are completly different and yet people are comparing them as if the name is the only difference. This is a truly unique experience and anyone who compares it to Eve truly is a dumbass.

completely agree. I just recently got out of a 3 year streak of Eve online and gave this a shot. As I believe both are good, I'm still partial to eve, however in no way, shape, or form would i compare this to that. I just like the play style of eve better than I like it of this, however I think both are really great games. STO is completely worth it if you are a trek fan.

Eve and this game are totally different. Eve is good. STO is bad, no lets call it shitty.
There is no choices as the ships captain. Your new ensign is your boss telling you what and how to do each episode. Ground combat is lame mid 80s style. The grind is boring. Not many different mobs. The loot system sucks. That pretty much covers it.

The ensign is my boss. Yeah I can customize myself anyway I want. I can customize the ensign too. But aside from telling him how I want his skin color and face to look like I have no REAL control over him.
He tells me how to complete my missions. "We should beam down and check things out" As captain I should choose how to solve the episodes I am in.
The customization is great in the game. The ability to make meaningful choices isnt.

@Bramendor dude i have no idea what your talking about but your the captain of your own ship with the option to recruit crew members in your ship crew slots, science, tactical and engnineer, YOU have the choice of accepting missions or not of course u cant control them their npcs, but u can use their skills in battle, its like any other rpg, where you get 'pets' basically. You get quests in other online rpgs where you need to entire an area for example and kill 10 enimes and then report

You can add members to your crew. And once they join they tell you how to do missions you have accepted. I warp into a place for my mission, my ensign pops up on my screen and says "We should fight that ship!" Or "Scan the area" I dont have much choice in the matter. It feels like my new ensign is bossing me around.
Also the npcs giving me the quest can be lower rank than me. Some ensign will tell me to fly out and kill something. I should say "slow your roll. You fly out"

I am both a Trekie and hardened mmo FPS player. Rubbish previously. . . this game is brilliant. OK, as an mmo or shooter, just good but as a Trekie . . Fantastic. Developers have achieved almost the impossible, you ARE in Star Trek . . there is little or nothing that you can't do in this game compared to the films or TV series.

Compared to EvE - and despite appearences (i.e an unnecessarily cluttered UI) This game has the tactical depth of a spit puddle. As with Chamions online, unless you live within sight (or at least walking diastance) of the servers the lag is terrible.
Bought it, paid for an extra month,but cancelled subs 36 hours later.
I love Star Trek, but this game is really naff. (yet another smack in tha face for Trek fans waiting for a decent game)

well yes i would agree with you in some sense, however from my limiteted experiance with eve you there had to "mine" to get resources ? to me that was sooo boring in eve. i never got to do any combat i guess it could just be me,, but that was my experience with eve.

Last time I played Eve, it was tick based leveling. I had to wait about 4 months of signing on every 2 hours to train a new skill until finally I could use a missile launcher and attempt a mission... While the gameplay I loved, way too much investment into a game. Thou, if you could tell me similarities between Eve and STO...other then MMORPG in space? It's like when Conan came out, everyone said "Oh, it's just another Warcraft". Hell, Warcraft was just another Ultima Online at that point.

hmm games interesting but ill skip it, also few tips dont fire torpedos less their shields are down its just a waste and stick to 1 target at a time and try to stick to the same side (since each area has its own shields) the fight wouldve went a lot quicker that way

The space battles were fun. However, that would become boring within a few months (like the rest of the game). Ground combat was basically a snooze. I dropped kicked my pre-order 1 week before the game was released.

I've played most of the top MMO's and after buying and playing this for about 5 hours the other day i was so sadly dissapointed i closed my account and deleted the game from my computer, i luv the Startrek series but they game does it no favors, it's stupid and cheap, no bridge view or view screen just all these tiny ship graphics and really lame ground battle graphics, i cannot believe they think this is good let alone fun, it's boring period.

this game looks great visually, but the gameplay (combat, at least) looks like crap. each has what 2-3 lasers and then torpedo's. so it;s fly slowly around while hitting 2-3 buttons. even in the large fleet scenario's you still arent doing anything.
it'd be the game i would rent but never own as it;s unique but still boring. too bad i cant do that haha, maybe play a trial...

Eve = spreadsheet online, means that there is no player interaction involved, you set your ship up then you click attack, whoever has the most skill points wins (WIth equal ships) and you cannot get the same amount of skill points of a player whos been online for 7 years, boring.

I agree, there should be a penalty but not "EVE" like penalties. I want to play, not make a career out of a game( there is nothing more exciting than to sit in an asteroid field for three days mining). EVE is designed so you have to buy three months subs to get anywhere. I've seen some EVE pvp where 2 guys just sit there in one place and shoot at each other for hours on end.

Lol this is just Ensign and Closed beta, i hit Rear Admiral in Open Beta, the UI is better as is the combat faster, esp with more weapon slots and abilities, although some enhanced shields can take a while to drop its all a matter of strategy.

There are other missions that are not about combat. You have to level to be able to play more of them. I love Star Trek. I've been a fan for a very long time and I find the game to be lots of fun. I'm more of a DS9 fan than TNG. TNG series focused on non-combatant episodes 90% of the time. DS9 had combat about 85% of the time, which is what I liked better. I prefered DS9 over TNG simply because The Enterprise was like a space hotel. It was usually so happy and safe. DS9 showed true struggle.

I'm trying the Beta, and a couple of notes based on comments: (1) You CAN move in 3 dimensions, the player here is just thinking '2-dimensionally'. Mouselook movement is a more 3D approach; (2) This is longer than most, but the style is more "naval battle" not jets; (3) The challenge in combat is rotating shields, redist. power so they don't collapse, keeping in firing arc etc. So more strategic/sim playstyle vs fast fingers (but not hyper complex like EVE). I find that an entertaining mix

This is early in the game man. There are away missions, diplomatic missions, answering distress calls etc. The maker of this film has his ship setup for pull defense and his weapons are on minimum yield, which is why it is taking him ten years to kill something.
