Afghanistan has been plagued with terrorists before 9/11. The United States once supported these terrorists when the soviet union came into Afghanistan! If we were really there to help them out, Canada would have been there in the 1990's when al queda and the taliban were just as strong as they are now. Harper has been single-handedly trying to wipe out the opposition from day one, and has made no effort to hide it. He started the attack ads, he wanted to gut funding to the opposition parties, he slandered them when they finally got a coalition together (and don't bother crying that it's illegal or whatever because it's not), and he was caught threatening to teach them a lesson.

Afghanistan has been plagued with terrorists before 9/11. The United States once supported these terrorists when the soviet union came into Afghanistan! And now the western world is against them after 9/11, when clearly these terrorists (whom western leaders once supported ) are threats around the world.

The Taliban, the Mujahideen etc., all global actors have changing interest. One day they are useful allies, the next they are hostile enemies.
Only a FOOL would think that a friend will always be a friend. ESPECIALLY in regions where volatile groups will do ANYTHING to achieve their goals.
The Mujahideen, who will later make up some parts of Al Qaeda, weren't a threat then. Instead it was the Soviets.

The international playing field then was RADICALLY different than it is now. It was a bipolar distribution of world order, with two global powers competing for allies.
States, trans-national groups and other players like the Mujahideen HAD to choose between the great powers. TO them, the US was the lesser evil.
To the US, it was an opportunity they COULD NOT refuse. They would not turn away a potential ally against their current arch nemesis. What they did isn't hypocrisy, it's a necessity.

Nobody hated the US more then Japan during WWII...but instead of not "giving a flying fuck" as you put it...US rebuilt the entire economy and Japan is today, one of the closest allies...and same goes for the Marshall Plan in Germany....

I agree with what u say re: Cdn soldiers, but get your facts straight, the army was sent to Afghanistan by Chretien after he refused Bush's push to send troops to Iraq and the only province left was kandahar in the south, the birthplace of the Taliban and one of the most dangerous places to be.But the troops can certainly hold there heads high with the job they are doing despite the causalities, also it was Harper that made sure that they got the equipment that was needed to do their job.
