@JCrumzz I know, back in the day you had to whoop a motherfuckers ass to get that damn belt, now all it takes is Vince McMahon wanting to get into your pants.
@Boman803 He was in 2004 same year as Hennan ventura, superstar graham watch?v=VtedPOjXe7s Flair inducted him saying "Harley was the epitome of what a man was in this business" "No one deserves more respect for being a man's man, day in and day out, going to work, working harder, longer than Harley Race." Watch Flairs retirement on raw Closely, When Harley came to the ring even though it was his night Ric went over and held the ropes open for him He didn't do it for anyone else.
@Fidodido6113 For sure, another example of how much respect Harley has at the Ric retirement Michelle McCool(?) and Mickie James escorted him to the ring when he came out. None of the other legends came out with a diva on each arm or even one walking them to the ring... just Harley.
The toughest guy, I saw/heard about in British wrestling was Les Kellett. He was this tiny little guy, who played a comedy charachter, but all the other guys were sacred of him. Somtimes he randomly just hurt people in the ring for no reason. He used to keep pigs, and was bitten, had an infected hand. He ordered one of the other guys to stamp on to get rid of the pus. And when the guy said no he said "Stamp on it, or I will stamp on you". Adrian Street tells stories about him.
Harley Race was a badass muthafucka. Listen to that promo. You don't fuck with Harley Race boy. When you wrestled Harley Race back in the 70s and 80s, Race not only took you to school and educated you, but he dealt out one hell of an asswhipping to anybody who stepped in that ring with him. Harley Race was a LEGTIMIATE TOUGH GUY. Absolutely nothing fake about him. And not only was he a great fighter, but Harley Race was an exceptional technical wrestler as well.
watch awa harley race vs larry z 1990. harlys old as hell but still beat down everyone of those wrestlers that came into split them up. just the nastiest headbuts youl ever see
@AmericanNohbuddy last 15? so you mean rock, austin, jericho, hhh, eddie, foley, sting, nwo etc etc etc...and everyone else during the BIGGEST ERA of professional wrestling history couldn't hold a candle to harley? bullcrap
oh yeah i realize how generic most of the guys were in the mic at that time with the exception of a few like race. and catchphrases or not, the guys i mentioned would draw more any day of the week & incite a crowd more than race with their promos. old isn't always infallible.
and a dusty, flair or bockwinkel etc promo (without catchphrases) even from the early-mid 90s is better than this one from race. so as for 15 years, even 1995-96 JAKE ROBERTS says hell no.
@sayanroy36 Harley ran circles around Rock on the mic. Rock's promos may have turned the kids in the WWE crowd, but Harley's promos convinced people Harley and wrestling were real.
@fjccommish what kids? im pretty when he was drilling a hole in mankind's head with those 15 chairshots,or going one hour with the cerebral assasin, the hardcore fans who were cheering him were adults

& oh, if you think rock only cut adolescent pleasing promos, then you know jack shit about his body of work.
Is Tommy Billington / Dynamite Kid mentioned? Fromwhat I have always heard or read is that he was legit tough with some serious shooting ability. He also had a Napoleon complex & felt the need to prove himself often. Also going along with what Tazz said in an earlier part about taking punishment. The whole Dynamite Kid/Jacques thing, from all accounts he got hit with a fist wrapped around a roll of quarters & got hit repeatly & didn't go down.
I think the only reason Vader has a reputation as a bad ass is because he was stiff with other wrestlers, well at least until he worked for WWF where Vince and Shawn Michaels pretty much straightened him out.
@666Horns Jim Cornette, who was managing Vader at the time, talks about it in his interviews. Shawn Michaels would act more like a spoiled brat by threatening to have Vader fired in the middle of the match.
Like Tazz, Vader's a tough guy, but Leon White is a big old teddy bear. Vader was providing for a family, for his kids, and Michaels was out of line by threatening his livelihood with his unprofessional attitude in the middle of work.
if u ever noticed &/or had a close-up view of the NWA Title(like the 1 Mr. Race has in his hands in that promo)...It says "WORLD'S HEAVYWEIGHT WRESTLING CHAMPION"...While other title belts have just simply "WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT WRESTLING CHAMPION"...I (personally) think that's awesome & sets it apart in its own, unique way...HARLEY RACE IS STILL THE MAN,imho!!!!!...
Wish somebody in wrestling now would show about a tenth of the intensity that Harley Race showed in that promo. Harley Race made the World Title mean something, not the other way around.
@Ventura827 Very well said. During one of his first WWF interviews on Tuesday Night Titans in 1986 Jake Roberts said it best :" A lot of people come out here and say things and scream and holler. I don't have to scream. because a long time ago I learned one thing, that if a man has enough power he can speak softly and everyone will listen ! So it's much easier that way isn't it? " Harley personified that with this interview, you can bet everyone listened.
@Fidodido6113 LOL of course,I wasn't trying to suggest he was the first one to do soft but powerful interviews, but that he explained it well as to why they are just as effective if not more so.
@Ventura827 Absolutely. I remember when I first saw Race as King Harley Race in the first Royal Rumble. Such an ominous and foreboding voice. I wish I was 15 years younger so I could've seen him in AWA.
@postman220289 It's not only very true, Orndorff did that AFTER one side of his body had atrophied due to nerve damage. He basically kick Vader's ass with 1 arm.
@postman220289 I vote for Orndorff being a bad ass. Vader was still a 400 plus pound guy. To beat the snot out of a guy that size with 2 properly working arms is hard enough, doing it with only one is borderline impossible. Keep in mind, Vader had his eyeball pop out during a match, and kept going. A pussy wouldn't be able to do that.
Paul was a legitimate bad ass (by all accounts) and Vader was super sensitive. Jim Cornette tells some stories where Vader took offense to some stuff Shawn Michaels did in the ring (not selling and yelling at him) and he came back stage crying.
@postman220289 Orndorff back in the day was a badass and Vader was very quiet outside of the ring. I think Bret and other said that he was a big teddy bear outside of the ring. So, I think its a mixture of both.
Vader was a pussy? Leon Vader White...the dude whose eye Stan Hansen pulled out of his socket and Vader put back in and continued the match is a pussy? Vader was no pussy and I'm willing to bet an out of shape Vader today could beat you like a rug if you had a year to train.
@postman220289 if you listen to shoot interviews with jim cornette, he talks about how vader was quite a sensitive kind of guy, completely different from his in ring persona.
@RomalianType It's totally true, Vader was a very tough guy, worked very stiff, worked through a lot of pain, but he was a family man, working to provide for his family - as a matter of fact, his son's been recently signed to the WWE (look out for Jesse White). He wasn't a guy built around real machismo, he simply played a monster in the ring.
@DevilTakeMe I tell everyone I know that an in-his-prime Vader would be awesome in the current WWE. He'd be a believable monster heel for Cena, Orton, etc. to struggle against and would make their title reigns more believable.
@postman220289 Vader only played a badass in the ring, he was a big teddy bear outside the ring. There's a lot of stories about how Shawn Michaels made him cry by threatening to get him fired, or Paul Orndorff kicking his ass in a shower while wearing flip-flops and with one arm.
Vader was still a big rough guy - the match where he popped his eye back into its socket proves it, but he never claimed to be a "badass" outside the ring.
@AzureDrachen The best example of that I ever heard was the famous "Joe Thurman Incident". Inside the ring, when the red light went on, Vader destroyed this jobber Joe Thurman and gave him a powerbomb. Vader in 1994 delivered possibly the most brutal powerbomb in the business and managed to break Joe's back with the force of the move, paralysing him from the waist down. When Vader got to the back, he was so worried that he'd badly hurt this kid that he burst into tears
but its still all scripted...

@DevilTakeMe I tell everyone I know that an in-his-prime Vader would be awesome in the current WWE. He'd be a believable monster heel for Cena, Orton, etc. to struggle against and would make their title reigns more believable.

@postman220289 Vader was actually pretty tough but he was very sensitive backstage and a real nice guy. So he was strong and tough but not a bad ass.
