The F6F was a hell of a bird and one of our great fighter planes, But the F4FU Corsair had the greatest kill ratio at 18-1 of the planes in the pacific theater. THE Hellcat was to be replaced by the F8F Bearcat BUT the The Japanese surendered before it replaced the F6F. The P51 AND the F4U went on in service in the Korean war , and into Viet Nam as support aircraft. Alot of third world Countrys were STILL flying P-51 , P-47 , F4FU Corsairs into the late 60's.
no, they retired the P51 (not sure about Corsair) but they retired them before the start of the 1960's... after using them in korean war, they decided to retire them because the jet age was pretty much the future of aviation. so, prop planes are still used today, but few and far between. atleast, not "fighters", but submarine hunters and or recon planes (like awaks/radar planes, P3's,
S3's and another plane, but cant remember what it is called)
That's STRANGE my friend, the Commemorative Air Force bought several P-51s , P47s, and DC 3 from Argentina in the early 80's AND ferried them back to the United States. I have a Picture of the in Flight formation on my wall of planes and one of my Father and I when they landed in Texas!
P.S.~ yes, it was a torpedo bomber, but there were some missions, i am pretty sure, where Avengers were used as fighter escort (because their long fuel supply) and also supply planes, to drop supplies to troops in enemy territory. granted, they were not fast, but their armor, carrying capacity and fuel load made them great
but what i meant to say was Dauntless Dive Bomber. That was the fighter-bomber. there is a episode of "Dogfights" on History channel, that you need to watch. it is amazing
@blownglasslide Well, the reason is is because the F6F came in while the war was still in full swing, and the Corsair came in when the war was in the process of winding down. Just saying...
Uh, actually the F4U was in operational service with the Marines and with Land-based Navy units nearly a year before the Hellcat saw combat. It first entered the combat zone in December of 1942, while the Hellcat didn't see action until November 1943.
You might mean a B-25 as in the title. A Flying Fortress is the B-17. The Avenger was a torpedo-bomber and in no way a fighter. While the Corsair was quite a plane the plane that really won the war against the Zero was the Hellcat. The same would be said of the Mustang in the European theater where it could fly all the way with the B-17's.
These planes were pretty much like the biggest aid in the war in the Pacific. Because They all could be launched from carriers, (B-24 Flying Fortress's from Doolittle raid, probably like the fastest medium bomber available), (TBM/TBF Avengers were remarkable and versatile fighter-bombers, used at midway and later on) ,(and F4U corsairs were like the P-51's of the European Theater, considerably fast and agile fighter-bombers)
tbh the spitfires the greatest plane ever ^^ the corsiars cool but cmon the spit fire owns :P

Hate to burst your bubble, as I also like the bent-wing bird, but the Hellcat had a 19-1 kill ratio.

B-24 Flying Fortress's
They were Liberators and never flew from a carrier. B-17s were the Flying Fortresses.
