People dont generally like Rose from what Ive seen, but I think she reintroduced Dr Who very well in 2005, And yes, im not a Classic Who Fan as much, although I enjoy watching Tom Baker Doctor on Gold, and Sarah Jane was brilliant, but I loved the modern series as a whole, including all the new companions which get critisised far to much. With the plot lines, character development, introduction of humor and romance, its got ordinary teens like myself totally hooked. RTD has done a fine job.

Sarah Jane, ratings wise, blows all other companions TOTALLY away. In her original 18 serials (5 with Pertwee, 13 with T.Baker), 37 of her 80 episodes pulled 10+ Million viewers. Her final episode pulled 12 million, by far the highest-rated character exit in WHO history.

T.Baker's 28 serials without Sarah Jane managed 34 episodes of 10+mil.

Series 1-4 has only 4 episodes rating 10+mil in 4 years.

Rose only rates high with those who haven't seen Classic Who, from my observation.

There are any number of Classic Who companions that make Rose look like the weak, whiny, clinging little girl she is. Practically any companion of the first four doctors rates far above Rose.

Sarah Jane rates far above them all for reasons very clear to those of us familiar with Classic Who. Those in firm 2nd place are, Ian&Barbara, Jamie, Zoe, Liz Shaw, Jo Grant, Harry, Leela, and Romana 1&2.

True, but back in the 1970s there were only three TV channels, no videos, DVDs, computer games or Internet. It was a totally different broadcasting landscape. I think you'll find programmes on the BBC generally got higher ratings then because there was far less competition. For a show to get anything near 10 million viewers today is an outstanding rating.

MALONEYCAMFIELD, you make an excellent and valid point concerning the different climate in the modern TV market versus the 1970's. Your point applies equally here in the U.S. as well as the UK. I suppose it would be very difficult to derive a formula for comparing today's viewing figures to the 1970's.

In evaluating ratings to see what did and didn't work in Classic Who, I noticed that the "10 million" rating seemed to be a valid marker during that 26 year era.
