Sammy does a great job here. Van Halen covering "Won't Get Fooled Again" with Sammy is also great...Back in the early 80s I was listening to Sammy Hagar before I even knew who Van Halen were. May sound shocking but it's true....I was like 12 years old when an older kid asked me if I wanted to buy some of his cassettes...he pulls out VH "Diver Down" and I asked who the heck was Eddie VH?...LOL But I sure got into VH later!...got into them with Sammy and also bought all their albums with Roth.
Anybody who says Sammy was no good in VH, that VH sucked with Sammy etc.....don't know what the hell they're talking about. The debate of DLR vs Sammy is old and worn out....anyone with common sense knows both era's of VH were different but both were good. Eddie took VH in the direction he wanted and Sammy delivered. With Sammy in the band, VH were incredible live, 100% musicianship from them, great sound, great camraderie on stage....
@semanray this is a hard keyboard riff to copy ..even with the bests keys..the studio version was perfected in the studio.. very hard to recreate outside of the studio..he actually does a pretty good job here..
Terrible lifeless rendition, but still great, Sammy's got balls (at least his guitarist has, you can see his package through the Lycra sut) to try, still rocks. The crowd knows, man.
I saw the Who on their "Farewell Tour" in 1982, it's also possible he's referring to that. Still have the well worn jersey, now many sizes too small (it was all the washings) packed away somewhere.
This clip looks like 79 or 80 based on the red Trans Am (Street Machine Tour?). I love Sammy, but how wrong was he when he said "if you missed 'em on their last tour, you missed somtehing, cause we're never gonna see 'em again" ????
If he meant with Keith or John, well, I guess he had a point. But I've seen the Who numerous times since then, and can you say CSI? They still rock, big time - looks like Hagar has similar longevity. He's outlived Pontiac (addios IEAT Z28) Amen, and rock on!
@ScottyHale I was there too.....AWESOME show....Night Ranger opened on their first tour. If you remember correctly after Remember the Heroes" he came back and did "This Planet's on Fire" with an extended guitar battle between him and Gary Pihl.
I was a junior in HS, drank a 1/2 of a fifth of chilled vodka (straight) with a buddy that later became (and still is) a DJ on 106.5 the Arch in Saint Louis.
Probably one of the best nights of my life and the night I because a lifetime Sammy fan....I do remember the "Planets on Fire" guitar solo trade off......
One of the greatest concerts I've attended with Night Ranger opening on thier first tour. The Redrocker puts his heart into EVERYTHING he does...that makes him one of the best EVER. In response to twochaudio.....Sam just needs to get back to his "salad days" mentallity.....hes too busy being rich now I suppose.....and RoughRay......ahhhhh piss off. The Who were nothing but peter puffers. "YOU"RE WASTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
I truly believe Roger, Peter, John, and yes, Keith would have been damn proud to see this tribute. I love how they're obviously playing this out of love and respect for the song and band. They're NOT just going though the motions, and they've stayed true to the tone and attitude of the song. Trust me, I'm the first to rip a so-called musicians stealing or destroying classic tunes for their own commercial benefit. Folks, this is a quality tribute that comes from the heart, and it shows.
Granted, this isn't quite as awful as the Van Hagar cover of "Won't Get Fooled Again" though. That was incredibly horrible. And it wasn't live either.
I totally fucking agree with you, dude. This is BS. I'll give Sammy an A for effort on covering The Who, but whoever thinks this is better than the original belongs in a mental institution.
Thanks for posting this!! I remember listening to this concert on the radio back when I was 17 in 1983. I had this on cassette, and loved it. My teenage sons are now Sammy fans and have wanted to hear this version ever since I told them about it. At 60, Sammy's still goin' strong! My sons met him a few years ago, and told him about my 90 yr old dad...Sammy said he wants to be just like him when he grows up. :)
Sammy fuckin' rocks!! I always thought VH was a better band with him singing. DLR is just a big asshole who thinks he's God's gift to Rock and Roll. Sammy IS ROCK and ROLL!!!
@tpep55 Gotta disagree.... kind of. Van Halen is better as Van Halen, not Van Hagar. I'm much happier with hagar on his own, then I can enjoy both more. :) DLR is a dick, but he was right for the band. Hagar has to put too much input in to be successful in a band where he's not the sole creative influence.
@sirlosealot0 I agree 1000% on your comment. Van Hager was not good. I loved Van Halen and Sammys Solo stuff was great. I love his solo stuff. I just thought Van Halen sold out to the commercial crap.
ok, usually im on DLR's side when it comes to van halen, and i think sammy cant sing anymore and is a total sellout today, but back then before Van Hagar, he could put on a show.
Well i think your wrong i just saw sammy in concert nov. 2 2007 seven and his voice sounds amazing and hes 60 right now and he still knows how to put on a fucking show
sounds fucking ace !!!!!!

He should re do this song. He is the only one who could do it justice. The drumming is missing the cymbal hits in the beginning though.

Checkerdome
Saint Louis, Missouri - March 13th 1983
I was in the audience. Filmed for MTV.
Best concert I have ever attended (I've been to more than 50)
The Who had just announced their retirement and that was back before bands came back after retiring.
How fitting- "Remember the hero's" followed this song...

I was at this concert!
Saint Louis Checkerdome - March 13th 1983.
I still have my ticket stub!
It was filmed for MTV and simulcast to many many stations across the United States.
I was with great friends, had a good Vodka buzz and Sammy rocked our socks off!
I have seen Sammy 10 more times after this....
each time was great but this one had it all.
Screw the Van Halen boys, Sammy rocked before he was in Van Halen and this is solid proof.
Rock on Sammy!
