I read the book "Andersonville" and really learned a lot. I don't believe that the commander should have taken the blame and be hung. He ordered food and supplies for the prisoners but he never got them. I am not defending him, but he did try, although he was a real mean bastard.
Love the video but hate the comments. All these people talking about hell and heaven n god. It's all bullshit, there is no hell and there is no heaven. There sure as fuck aint a god. SO move along people.
i had a relative die in andersonville and i beleavs that he looks down on us and says thanks for remembering this tragity and never forget and i beleave that the north and the south should just put the past behind them god bless you all
I just want to say one more thing... The victims of Andersonville and all the rest of the prison camps... victims of the entire war, the families who lost their brave daddy, may you brave men rest in Heaven peacefully. You fought and died for your beliefs. You fought for your family, your home. You died as Americans, nothing could ever take that away from you. North and South. Why are we so seperated? Lets hold hands as one nation forever. ♥♥♥♥♥ North ♥ South ♥♥♥♥♥
Thank you from this great great granddaughter of a USMRR surveyor and construction foreman who was imprisoned in Andersonville. When I saw the Turner movie I wept at the horrors that he lived through. (USMRR-United States Military Rail Road)
my relitiv sed after he left andersonville he would never forgive the confederits for the hourers of thet presion he never shuke a reb vet's hand at the geteysburg reunion he just cude not forgive
read your history, Andersonville was a prison camp for just over a year. To have over 12000 deaths in that amount of time is beyond belief. There is no Union camp to have that many deaths due to the conditions. Agree'd there was horror in union prison camps, but nothing near Andersonville. And as a 2nd Great grandson of an Andersonville POW, Thank you for this tribute.
Everyone fought for what they believed was right. Who trully knows what is right and what is wrong? And so i do not think we should condem those who only did what they did because they BELIVED they were doing right. Both sides belived this. Both thought they were right. And i morne for the both.
Great tribute!!! My great great great great uncle was a prisoner at andersonville, luckily he survived. May all the soldiers that died there rest in piece. And may all those Confederates that tortured them ROT IN HELL!!!!!!
@trainkids Excuse you? That was very inmature. Okay... I have a Union grandfather and Confederate grandfather... and I have great respect for all of these men. Even if I weren`t related to that Union troop, I would still respect him. But you know what, I hated these prison camps too and believe me the Union was very cruel to the CSA too. It was both wrong of them, a heritage I am not fond of. Nobody deserves to rot in hell. Why? They already been through hell! Through this war! I HATE WAR!
@trainkids I`m just saying... I know everyone isn`t as understanding as I am. That`s the part of being understanding I guess. Anyhow... Just show respect for both sides, okay? I used to hate the North too but when I started growing up I looked back on all the things I said and I felt guilty. I then realized how cruel we were too. I was angry to know my relatives were treating you Yanks the same way as the Nazis treated Jews but the North did the same thing. So let nobody rot in hell. RIP.

It shouldn't be forgotten that the Union had it's share of inhumane death camps as well...Camp Elmira and Camp Douglas come to mind...
One was just as bad as the other...

Very touching. The story of Andersonville is one of the darkest chapters of the civil war.
