  • wow..... :-) makes me happy just hearing it

  • Yeah i got a kalimba in Africa and i only know a couple songs i taught myself but if you could put like a fingering chart or how to video on there that would be very helpful on learning this instrument

  • Well, every kalimba type has its own tuning - which makes my life very busy, as my job is to provide interesting and varied high quality instructional material for each kalimba I sell. Visit the Kalimba Magic site and look for your kalimba - or perhaps provide me with a photo of your kalimba, and I may be able to figure out which tuning it is in or should be in. -Mark

  • Is it a Digitech RP200 you're using? And which kalimba are you using?

  • do you not have problems with feedback?

  • I don't have problems with feedbakc, but I don't play with rock and roll bands - many bands have a very high stage volume, which would probably feed back. -Mark

  • Awesome Vid, Sir. what kind of pick-up are you using. I'm planning on making one myself here soon.

  • The pickup is installed in Africa, and it is sort of a trade secret -Mark

  • it seems that you're playing a gameboy

  • Does this video do justice to the true sound of that makings on its own without the amp because I have heard an instrument that sounds very much like that but the sounds came to much crisper and the vibrato just sounded very unique to the instrument just wondering thanks

  • Watch the guitar chord - the first two cycles of the music are completely acoustic and the chord is not plugged in - the second two cycles have the chord plugged into the amp. After that I experiment with different effects in the digital effects processor.

This solid body KALIMBA does not have any natural vibrato, but see for example the video for "first look inside" to see and hear the natural vibrato/wah-wah you can get with a box kalimba. -Mark

  • Nice ; check-out 'Paco Serry Zanza' for some great kalimba playing.

  • Nicel

I owned that same effects pedal too!

  • 00:46 Nice Daft Punk sounds!!!

  • I don't know anything about pickups, can i just google "guitar pickup" and go from there? or is it more complicated?

  • Ur bouncing with so much joy

  • I loved the soundtrack of the blue beanie! That game got me into kalimba music

  • Thanks! I thought the music worked well with the game, but for some reason the sound quality was pretty poor. -Mark

  • @kalimbamagic oh the music was so perfect for the game that i didn't even think about the sound quality :)

  • High I recently purchased this wonderful instrument and I've been absolutely loving it so much! It's so much fun to play and create on. Just wondering if that first little piece you play in this video is available on KTabs, or any similar lessons are available for this particular kalimba?

  • It was an improvisation, but I could figure it out and write it out in tablature. -Mark

  • @kalimbamagic

That would be great! Do you have any other tablature available for this specific Kalimba?

  • I have an instructional download of 52 exercises for the "HotShot-11" AKA The Hugh Tracey Celeste Junior Diatonic, it is available from the Kalimba Magic web store for $5.

  • Hah, it's greeat!

  • i'm getting one. i'm sold!

  • my god, it's just awesome)

  • Man, once you drop in that external processing, this thing really sings.

  • this is really fresh!

  • NIce

  • man it sounds like Michael Jackson - The Lost Children guitar part. RIP MJ

  • omg i wanna learn to do that!!! where i can get one???

  • Very Cool sound! I noticed the 1/4" jack suddenly appear plugged into the amp at ~23 seconds into the clip... Magic? :D

  • how many keys and what it the tuning thanks

  • This is the 11-note Hugh Tracey Celeste Diatonic Junior, aka HT Hotshot-11 - notes from hlow to high are: D E F# G A B C D E F# G -

    or left to right:

    F# D B G E D F# A C E G -Mark

  • I JUST BOUGHT ONE!

    fucking awesome.

  • lol me 2

  • i want one, but cant afford it! im so sad, i really want it badly..!

  • lol the cheapest one is like 15 dollars, and its still as good

  • sounds like it should be the theme tune to rugrats or something ;)

  • Which model of calimba is that?

  • Very good, I am definitely going to be buying one of these at some point. It's the HotShot-11 with Pickup, yes?

  • Yes, though there are several kalimba models with pickups. -M

  • You look my band teacher! plus those speakers are in the music room too! o.o

  • woah!!!! <3 you.

  • omg itz kylelandry ur awesome at piano

  • omg it is he stole my boyfriend give matt roy back to me :(

  • Hmmm?

  • lmao

  • NOW WITH DISTORTION! YEAH!

  • yeeeah men, eres la onda

  • that's soo cool

  • Really nice playing. Would be curious to hear how it sounds with a piezo.

  • everything is perfect except that stupid synthetic Digitech RP processor.

bravo! I'll run for one kalimba know, but I live in Serbia so I don't have a clue how could I get one for me.

  • Dear AbramelinBG:

We do ship internationally - I have never shipped to Serbia, but would love to. Shipping a kalimba internationally is usually $25.

    -Mark

  • Thanks for the reply.

I'll check about the payment methods on your website. Cheers!

  • I really enjoy your playing, my favorite being "First look inside". Keep look up the good work, i'm impressed.

Just got my Kalimba today, 17 key Hugh Tracey...No idea what I'm doing though.

  • hello hello! im interested in getting the 17-note treble with pickup, and im wondering, does the pick up affect the acoustic sound? im just thinking if it makes it any less full sounding or less resonant than i'd just stick with the one without the pick up.

  • The answer is general no effect - but there is

a second order effect. When you cover the

sound holes, you get the Wah Wah effect, and the

jack hole is basically such a hole. So, if hat hole is unplugged, it reduces the "depth" of the wah wah by about 10-15%. To address this, you could always plug in or tape over the hole. BTW, the pickup doesn't pick up very much of the wah wah sound.

  • Fascinating - the sounds that you were getting around :45 or were very cool.

  • I would love to see some guy do a kalimba solo in the middle of some crazy rock jam... Unconventional, hilarious, awesome...

  • would be cool if u went with distortian on 1 of the settings...that would sound so cool...Nice playing also lol i wonder wat would it sound like if u made a heavy metal kalimba song that would be sick...any way great job dude

  • this sounds very celtic harp in a way. where can i get a kalimba with a pickup? i'd love to buy one. let me know. thanks.

  • go to a music shop and pick up a Piezoelectric contact mic.

  • So lovely ! ^^

  • It's so cool!

    I love it.

  • I like this...this is perfect kalimba playing.I have a kalimba and I usually have to play a song before I go to sleep.I love the sound of it, it keeps me from being stressed out.

  • Very nice, whats your opinion on the new chromatic kalimbas coming out this june (bet you can play wonders with this one). I ordered one, should arrive in june; can't wait to get my hands on it.

  • I am afraid of them. Kalimba is so easy for me, adding the chromatic notes makes it a new instrument, which I will need to learn from scratch. If you ordered one, you'll be on the newsletter list, look for the article on the chromatic kalimba there in a few days. -M

  • Obviously, while you're playing, you're in your world. That's the magic of music. ^_^ I love the sound the kalimba makes.

  • Yes, I go traveling with my kalimbas every day. -Mark

  • What's that effect around the 40 second mark?

  • Sorry, I dunno - was just pushing the buttons

    that day.

  • its an envelope filter witrh some type of distortion i believe (i have that same pedal)

  • you rock man!

  • Hey, since the kalimbas you have posted at kalimbamagic are tuned to a specific key. how difficult is it to tune them to other keys.

  • For a short video tutorial on retuning, do a YouTube search on "New Sansula Tuning".

ALSO, we can work with you on coming up with a tuning that works for you, and can retune as well.

  • Hey! I've taken a big interest on Kalimbas lately. I'm going to make one for my physics class. I was musing with a friend about putting a pickup on this wonderful instrument, and lo and behold, I find this video. I was wondering how you rigged it up, if you would be kind enough to tell me. It'd be greatly appreciated. ^_^

  • They install the piezo-electric pickup at

the workshop where it is made in South Africa.

A Pintec AP10 (or similar) drum trigger also works well

  • how many notes does the kalimba has??

  • This one is an 11-note. In the same space as the ALTO kalimba has 15, this lets 11 spread out comfortably - so it is easier to play than the ALTO.

  • Once again Very Cool!!

  • i can dig it, i love the sound... and i use a digitech RP80 (im cheap XD)... i played one of those, a coconut one at my nearest guitar shop and it sounded awesome and was fun to play, but noone knew what it was... im gonna look up kalimba's right now! :)

  • great video. i'll buy a kalimba from you in about a month, maybe less. cheers. loved the video and hope to see more of your posts.

  • Wow Mark,

I live on the other side of the country - but my mother JoAnne just bought an Alto from you and I have to say that I am having some of the greatest fun I've ever had with this instrument.

I also received your hand written card which was such a pleasant surprise. You've inspired me and brought immense joy to my life with your beautiful music.

And for that, I can never truly thank you enough.

  • Wow, your words are very confirming.

I'm glad that the kalimba is blessing your life.

    Thank you!!! -Mark

  • Very nice.

  • how did I miss this one! Awesome and creative!!! Loved it Mark!

  • Dude, that's so funny how the processor, chord, and finally the amp all disappear at the end. LOL... Sweet playing as usual. Love the Beatles chord at the end.

  • Play Some SKYNYRD, MAN!!!!!!

    Incredible, as always!

  • Free Bird!
