Donovan doesn't have a very pleasant sounding last name. He has kind of reflected back in a pretentious manner, remembering his own importance in an exaggerated way
I was having a drink at a pub yesterday and this song was coming out of the speakers. After a while my ears were just locked onto this man's voice. I asked the bartender, he checked and came back. "The Dubliners", he said. Well, here I am because I wanted to know more about this guy. I see now that it is not just the fantastic voice. Luke Kelly has out-of-this-world stage presence.
I agree, Coulter wrote some very good songs early on, but became very mainstream, and allowed himself to become so. Donovan may have had some hits but much of his music was very original and fringey and edgey. So Coulter became....kind of like St. Patricks Day in the USA
Donovan was Donovan,Kelly was Kelly.Donovan did make good records. Kelly made better, with the Dubliners. Why is Donovan such a prick? What`s Your claim to fame??
thats because of his universal belief in the working man- from his earliest days to the end he was a committed communist/socialist and any thing that wronged his world was very important to him
Yes, it is a really kelly song, that is to say: it could be sung the best by him. Phil Coulter is wright in that vision. I love to see Kelly getting very serious in these kind of songs, more than the other genre of cheerio- and joy-songs. His voice has the exactly feeling for it.

Donovan knew everyone though, and his guitar-playing was well-developed from Bert Jansch. It drew Dylan's envy!!!
