Pause this video at 1:18 and put all of the volume down, then open in a different window this video "Swedish House Mafia - One (Your Name) " then let them both play at the same time with the other videos music, and enjoy!!
he is his OWN percussion instrument! what an amazing and original! the irish have a saying: "he's a man you don't meet everyday..." that's true about mr. d ray white!
I guess I'm just uncultured. All I see is a tap-dancing hillbilly, while a bluegrass band plays somewhere off-screen. If any of this is true Americana to me, it'd be the band, not Pa.
@TheVark675 -- FIRST OFF YOU NEED TO REALIZE THAT YOU ARE A YANKEE ,.... AM NOT FROM W.VA. BUT I AM A HILLBILLY , REDNECK ... ... DON'T TALK ABOUT WHAT YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND !!!! AND DON'T EVER DO IT FACE TO FACE WITH SOME ONE LIKE ME . YOU WOULD TRULY BE SORRY .......
@Julesbumstead: Steve Allen Rowe, 30, also of Prenter, located in Boone County, West Virgina, home of the White family, shot D. Ray and sons Jesco and Dorsey White with a 12-gauge shotgun outside D. Ray's home on July 2, 1985, stemming from an argument between White and his sons and Rowe. Jesco and Dorsey were injured, and D. Ray was killed by a shotgun wound to the chest.
He is the reason I started dancing again...I used to be an Irish Step Dancer but gave it up years ago until I saw this. Thank you, D. Ray, for the inspiration. RIP my friend...
I've seen LOTS of D Ray's dancing, never in person. But this is the first time I've seen that "hands on chest, work down to knees, slap the ground" thing. I don't know what he called that but it's really cool. That loud single stomp, which he called "Shotgun Blast", will definitely wake up if you had been snoozing a bit. I HAVE met Jesco more than once. I truly think he's a bit better than dad, although he'll never admit to that & their style is a bit different too, so hard to directly compare.
I agree with you! I don't know if it's that Jesco is better, or like you said, if it's just a different style. A lot of the time, if there's a style you like better, you might even say it's a little better. I mean, shoot, we all do it. But you're right! I do enjoy Jesco's a little more but both a great flatflooters!
thank yew Bradaighbunch, you are right on when you say the real heart of american heritage lies south of the mason dixon - there is a lot of old pioneer stock & a lot of heritage that is just part of who we are. Say what you will about Donnie Ray White or Jesco White or their family - they are real - the real deal.
wow.. i'm a yank, but if i had to look for something that's truly american or americana, it would be something like this. the real heart of american heritage, or something that's distinctly american, lies south of the mason dixon, i believe.
@Bradaighbunch west virginia is the best!!!! the southern and appalachian states get crap in the media and WV was really part of virginia through half the confederate war. Anyway, who cares about hollywood consciousness and their sick jerry springer t.v. shows? D Ray and Jesco are a real deal.
@westchesterny yes they are the real deal, i agree. it's funny, i was listening to npr the other night and a program was playing music from Scotland and Ireland that eventually made it's way across the pond with the immigrants who settled in the Appalachians and it evolved, or devolved, i guess, depending on how you look at it, into permutations of music and dance like D Ray is doing here. really interesting stuff. i love it myself.
@Bradaighbunch ...Bless your heart. If this speaks to you then you've got Southern (or Celtic) in your veins somewhere. Pull up some floor and sit a spell. Want a glass of sweet tea or some lemonade?
@lochldy thanks for that comment. i've been meaning to respond to this for a while. and yes, maybe i do have a little sounthern blood in the veins somewhere. ya'll live like ya please and seem to make no apologies about it. That's what America is about, isn't it. well, thanks for the southern hospitality. i now know the true meaning of the phrase.
@karpdamm my apologies. i thought W. Virginia lay south of the mason dixon. my point was that, for myself, i believe the heart of American culture lay in the south. i don't, on any level, believe theses people resemble 'northerners', either.
Hello there! Had to check out the details... In fact WV is south of the original Mason-Dixon-line, although WV never joined the Confederacy. Guess we'll have to meet and discuss the matter over a bottle of (for example) some whiskey from ... well ... Tennessee or Kentucky?
@karpdamm Whiskey comes from Tennessee, BOURBON comes from Kentucky (although some distilleries in KY do produce whiskey) and there IS a difference to those of us from down this way. Lol. Just figure I would nit pick and throw my two cents in like everybody else around here. (all in good fun)
@awstianti OK! Thanks for the information! I prefer rhum myself... I'm from Finland, but I've been to U.S. a few times. Not to West Virginia, though. Washington D.C. and "Stonewall" Jacksons home in Lexington, Virginia is probably the closest where I've been.
@StingerNova the is called "cindy" or "cindy cindy". check out this version: "Cindy - D. Ray White with Heinrich XIII and the Devilgrass Pickers" also on my account.
